Ok, The fuse top sheeting is completed now and all that is left on the fuses is the fin middle sheeting piece, the fin cap and the rudders. I am waiting until I get the rudders and stabs built to finish the fin sheeting as this will allow me to remove any debris from hinging the rudder since I using the Robart 1/4 scale hinge points just more of them. Now that I want to take some pictures of course the camera battery is dead. I started the rudders tonight and with the added area I thought we should have more hinges than shown and also I beefed up the hinge mounting areas with 1.5 inch long balsa blocks mounted on the bottom side of each rib in the fin and rudder also for extra support I added a 1 inch wide plywood block between R-10 and R-11 for the horn to mount. I will post pictures asap.

Just was able to load up the pictures of the top sheeting and fin cap laminated up. I added a plywood center for hanger rash and shaping purposes to the fin cap. The rudders are sheeted on both sides and are drying overnight pinned down to the table.

Ok, haven't been able to get in the shop for a week or so. My wife fell and got banged up pretty good last weekend. For those of you that don't know she has had 4 heart attacks since the Hamburg jet rally back in Oct and has had a medical issue that is causing her to blackout and fall without protrcting herself when it happens. Sucks getting older.

Bob, you are great at making updates to anything we find that you can inprove in the kits so a big public Thank You from all of us builders. I made that suggestion for those guys making wood wings for the larger gear plates; as my std size one had a plate failure on the third landing a few years ago and I beefed mine up and have not had an issue since. I was able to get back on the fuses while Jan was in the hospital on the mend and now need to work on the front nose block and the fin sheeting between the front and rear sheet. Like I said before getting old / sick sucks!

After the romantic (LOL ) dinner last night, Jan spent the evening with me in the shop cleaning up and watching me make up the sheeting for the first side of one fin. I will post pics tonight after the second side goes on and the second fuse gets it's fin sheeted. Other than the inlets (need the wing for this step) and the nose block which I am waiting on until the very end so I can stand them on the nose without issues thay are ready to move to the side so I can start the stab and wings. See you on the bus Bob.

Been trying all day to post progress pictures. Got all of the fins sheeted, rudders hinged, top caps glued on and shaped over the weekend. RCU is getting really bad of late with posting and uploading pictures. I might take the thread to another site if this keeps up much longer.

A couple of you have asked about the type of rudder hinges I am using they are Dubro #257 large scale hinges. I like them because they have a large surface area for glue adhesion, a removable 3/64 cotter pin for the hingepin that you can replace with music wire and remove the surface during painting or repairs. Nick shows Robart 3/16 round hinge pins and while I used them on the std size one I prefer flat hinges because for me they are easier to install, any large hinge will work you just need to use enough. I used five on the rudder and will use 4-5 on the elevators, ailerons, but will use the Robarts large round ones on the flaps with 4 hinges instead of 3 as shown on the enlarged plans since I can put them anywhere with the foam wing I am using.

I am going to the Wram show tomorrow, Nick Sr and Jr are there and I'll have first hand info tomorrow night and will post it. I got a call from Nick Sr. Tuesday that Jr has the canopy plug finished and will be sending me home with a prototype to fit check. Stay tuned.

We are on the way to the WRAM Show with 55 guys looking to find the new stuff and good deals. Nick sent me a picture of his booth on Facebook last night. Looks like a nice new clean building.

I tried to post at the show but we couldn't get the wifi to work inside the building. I picked up two canopies from Nicky and he is ready to sell them to those that are ready to buy them. Contact him direct @ 631-467-4765 for the purchase. They are huge! I will post pictures from the sho tonight once we get back home.

Ron,
I realize this system has been honked, but please don't give up keeping this thread updated. Some day I'm going to build my XL and this thread has been great resource.

Regards,
Bart

PS. Maybe a move over to RC Groups might be in order?

Thanks Bart. i will not give up just getting frustrated on a lot of fronts lately. I've been thinking the same thing about the other site as a possiblity. I have been ill for a a week since the Wram show and have yet to even unpack my goodies from the trip. Hopefully I'll get back downstairs tonight to get the bench cleared for the stabs to start sheeting. I think Bob Frantz is ahead of me right now and jimmy called to see how long the fues is so he can buy a van that it will fit in. lol.

Spent two hours tonight cleaning up the shop so we can sheet the cores. I just spent 30 minutes trying to post this info. The sheeting is ready top go on and I will try to post the process this week as it progresses. One you use the vacuum bag method you will never want to use weights to bond sheeting onto cores ever again.

Well Two weeks of the spring head cold and then a week of travel for work set me back a bit. I got the first set of stabs sheeted today but it took more than an hour to find the thread. I'll post pictures of the sheeting process on the second set this week. Nick is also back in town for a few months working for me so he will want to see it finished as well.

Hey Ron, having the factory guy help is not fair. I really need to get my butt in gear, too many distractions, working, eating, sleeping. Should we think about a rental van for Toledo? Ray's truck rental in Timonium has pretty good rates.
