After 6-7 hours of sanding, fuselage was ready for panel lines... Surface are smooth, like glass...

So, I move fuselage in work shop for labels...

Before adding panel lines I must prepare P 47 file in Corel draw file...

After that, I started to work. First line was in the middle of the left fuselage side, and from that line I measure all other. Than same procedure on right side...

For some lines I must made paper template...

Than I turned fuselage and made lines on the bottom side, and finally put wing on, because some lines are going from under belly to the fuselage...

At Tuesday I will take away Thunderbolt to my friend painting work shop, in which all my models was be painted. He will add final layer of the filler. Than I will remove panel lines, and start working on the rivets...

To be continued...

Regards

Mirce

As I wrote a few day ago, my friend Golub apply few layers of filler...

I was using Body acrylic filler...

We need two day for finishing job. Here are few more pictures...

Tomorrow I will bring all parts back in my work shop, and start working on details and rivets...

Yesterday I bring P 47 back to my work shop. I was very curious whether the applied layer of filler thick enough.

As soon as I started to remove panel line strips, I saw that everything is OK. Layer was more than enough thick, and edges of panel lines was sharp...

Few pictures with big zoom... Don't forget, line is 1,2 mm wide...

Right now surface are like "orange peel", but after apply a rivets, and final sanding, it will be smooth like glass. Layer is depth enough...

And, few more photos how fuselage and wing looks now...

Today I will start adding rivets. I think, I will need one week to apply all...
I will not be bored before departure on Top Gun next Sunday...

Mirce

Thank you John...

OK, here is what I was doing in last two days...

I saw on in Meister site that they have 3D Tail Panel Aet. I want to made that detail, but my panels will be made from filler. I'm afraid that self adhesive foil will unstick from surface.
So I must first made templates...

Than must prepare surfaces. I sand it a little...

With transfer foil I pick up template, and apply it on elevator...

Same procedure on other side, and other elevator. Than masking with paper...

Same was made on rudder...

Last evening I apply 4-5 layers of filler. Today I take down all masks, and after fine sandind I get nice 3 D panels...

I made little trimmer on aileron...

Last evening I want to start with made rivets on wing surfaces. Everything was prepared...

... but before first rivet I get new idea...

My plan is to offer "Finish set" - set in which all modeler will have all to made scale finish on big models (90"- 120").
Finish set will contain 100m - 1,4mm wide panel lines, 15000!!! rivets (little circles 1,8 mm wide), 250 pieces dummy screws (2,5 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm).
How it look you can see on my Hellcat...

After this project I will have "finish set" for 100" P 47, with all panels, hatches, and many other detail which you need to have for great Thunderbolt finish...

So, I decided to not made rivets with soldering iron, I will made it with my "Finish set" details. It will be in same time good opportunity to everybody see how P 47 will look at the end, and what is a procedure to make that finish...

Part with panel lines you saw in the previous post...

Now, because I change a plan, I must first sand a wing. Surface don't need to be so thick, now it need to be smooth for easier applying rivets.
Today I was again sanding wing and control surfaces. I must take care about not to sand to much around panel lines, to not made it shallow...

Surface is like glass... I think none of my model was so slick...

Tomorrow I just need to made polish with 800 grid sand paper, and start riveting...

To be continued...

Mirce

Thank you David, I know also that will have fun on Top Gun.
I want to take the opportunity to invite everybody who read this topic, and will be on Top Gun, to meet there. I will readily recognize, from Serbia will come just one modeler - me...

Back to P 47... Today I polished wing and some little pieces with 800 grit water sand paper...

Next was to prepare rivets. I made 5000 - 2 mm rivets. It is part of Finish set I will offer.

As I told yesterday, Finish set will include 100 meter of 1,4 mm lines for panel lines, 15000 - 2 mm circles - rivets, and 250 pieces of each 2,5 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm dummy screws. In set will be 2 meter of transfer foil for applying...

Regular price will be 99,50$, but for this week order, and on the Top Gun (Frank allowed me to sell Finish set under FTE tent) price will be 69,50$...
If someone want Finish set, please let me know to prepare enough pieces...

First rivets was add on ailerons. I measured what is distance on P 47 draw...

...than cleaned surface with alcohol and draw guide lines for rivets...

For applying rivets you just need a lot of patience. This is slow process and need days of work to do it in right way.
But, in this process you can't made fatal mistake like when you made rivets with soldering iron, where every mistake is almost not fixable.

With transfer foil I pick up first "line" of rivets, and apply it on aileron...

You must push transfer foil on paper to unstick rivets, and push it gentle again on surface. Transfer foil can use as much time as it can pick up rivets from paper (maybe 5 - 10 times). Of course, it may be that one - two rivets not unsick from paper, but you can add it latter... When you see how it work, you can do it pretty fast...
Results is like this...

Mirce

Hello Pete, for all skining I use 3mm balsa.
For fuselage I get balsa with short kit, and for wings and tail I must buy balsa plates.
I measure every plate and use most light 3 mm balsa plate I can find. It is about 25-35 gr every 3 mm balsa plate. Easier I put behind, on tail, and rear part of the wing.
When you put glass and epoxy resin, filler... on surface, it will be very strong - hard...

Hope this will you help... Be free to ask whatever you're interested...

Regards

Mirce

Mirce,

Thanks for the invitation. Going to Top Gun has been a dream of mine ever since I've been flying R/C airplanes. Maybe one year I'll be able to make it, but unfortunately it won't be this year..... Oh well, that's life I guess.

Again, have a great trip.

David

In last two - three days I was working on few fronts...

My "Mirce Finish Set" is ready for Top Gun. I made few sets, and will see what the modelers say about them.

I was working on Meister P 47, continue to put rivets on upper surfaces. One half is finished. Picture tell better than many words...

Few details in macro mode... Don't forget, every rivet is 2 mm diameter...

All in all, for me this trip was fenomenal experience...

One more time, thanks for all...
