In years past it was 3.5 lbs, or 56 oz. For the last few years, it's been 3.75 lbs, or 60 oz.

Sorry I guess now everybody knows I haven't raced Quickies for several years.
Just couldn't do it at the club field safely anymore so we started doing the 1/2 A thing at a sod farm and now we're doing the 15-300 thing at the same Sod Farm along with a 200 sq. in. Electric class.
I'm really tempted to finish one of my 300 sq. in. racers the same way Sahartman21 has done in this thread. I've been following it closely.

As I recall the change to 60 ounces (3.75 pounds) was to allow a couple more ounces for composite construction.

Composite models are not allowed for the 424 class but are allowed for 426 and 428 classes.

It was a combination of composites and safety as the 428 planes continued to get faster, although there were plenty of people that could build safe planes at weight. I wasn't in favor of it at the time, but it sure makes it easier to build without worrying about it, and I can make them more solid now.

The other model was finished yesterday.

It will be dubbed "VSR" racer as it is basically 2 airplanes. The fuselage is the Venom and the wing is similar to the Sam-Rai.

Looks like some weight will have to be added to bring it up to minimum weight (60 ounces).

So tell me, why do you think this has come in lighter than the other one?
Inquiring minds want to know!

Why was the VSR lighter than the Hurrikane?

1) The 424 engine (TT40) is roughly 2 ounces heavier than the 426 engine. The VS has a 426 engine and the Hurrikane has a 424 engine.
2) The wood in the Hurrikane fuselage was heavier than for the VS body. The Hurrikane fuselage weighed 1 ounce more than the VSR fuselage.

I was lucky enough that additional nose weight was not needed for balance on the VSR.

Many times you have to add nose weight behind to address the lighter engine weight.

If you need weight, many are adding this in the motor mount hole in the backplate mount.

The picture shows that 10 quarters can be added if required. You add a piece of foam in the front and a piece of tape at the back to keep them in place. Ten quarters weigh in at 2 ounces.

I didn't have to add any weight.

You really don't have to worry much about weight in the Q500 class.

I've raced many models that were closer to 4 pounds and have found that it makes little difference.

Having a smooth finish without wrinkles, for iron-on finishes, does make a difference.

Typically the pilot that flies the best course does win!

I test flew the VSR (Venom-Sam-Rai) today. It's a winner.

The wing saddle was adjusted to fit a wing similar to the Sam-Rai.

The combination takes off straight and turns very quickly.
