Tegwin!
The words of an american hovercraft pilot sums it all up, he said ! and I quote" the british have taken the hovercraft to one stage,we have simply taken it a stage further" unquote.
This guy flys on of the most sophi sophis the most advanced acv'v today lololol.
Now I do not know how much experience you guys have of acv's, but pray tell me tegwin! what kind of advancement do you expect?, nor does it matter who it comes from ,beit hover mal or the queen of sheeba.
Anyway! I came on to help, not stabbed in the back, and beleive you me I come with a wealth of info. more than you can handle!.
Im beginning to feel a bit guilty now and I have done nothing,.
BTW. Respect to hover mal and his designs ,I would have it no other way, ok chaps.

Ive been reading this slanging match for a while, seems that's what the original post has turned into and I read with interest you guys talking about technology and inovation. But if you truely look into the area of full size craft you will see that there has been very little advancement in the basic design and principles since the 1960's. I have been involved with full size (2-4 person craft) for many years and ofcourse there have been improvements and developments. But basicaly the only inovatiuons have been in modern contruction materials, modern high performance engines, more effecient fans, and in larger commercial craft computers and electronics. The actual basic designs and experimentation was all done by the British in the 50's & 60's.

As for the view expressed above that a lack of full size commercial craft is due to a lack if innovation - this is not true. The lack of commercial craft is due solely to the limitations all hovercraft have. They are a high maintenance and expensive craft to operate. They are primarily water going craft and are not all terrain vehicles and as such commercial viable operations are limited. They are simply too expensive to operate in most situations where cheaper alternatives are available.

And as for the quote that the British took hovercraft to one level and we (the Americans) have taken it further - what a load of rubbish. The Americans built the LCAC - big deal, the thing is an ugly looking tank that looks like it is clad with roofing sheets, sure it works but tell me where the innovation is over something like the SRN4 built 25 years before it?

The fact remains that hovercraft are still a generally misunderstood type of vehicle and that many operators / manufactures have gone broke attempting to establish a commercially viable operation with them. Its also true that a great number of craft have been produced that never worked properly due to inherent deign floors and lack of understanding. To make a craft work stick to the basic principles and designs that have been proved. Why reinvent the wheel when you can use basic hull and skirt designs that have been prov en as the basis for your own designs and craft.

Im not about to get into any slanging match, and your words are my sentiments exactly, My quote on the hovercraft pilot was not a boost for US enterprise ,it was a statement of where Britsh Design finished and the lcac took over and the only advancements are of structurel materials and engines etc, as for the SrN4, and although retired is still a very impressive sight, and Im talking from my own experience of the craft in the cockpit and at sea and in the jump seat, no other hovercraft can touch the SrN4.
Now shall we get on with the job in hand and help some of these guys get a model flying.
Btw. I also have been involved with acv design and construction and I continue to do so, I only came on here to help, and got the buttend of a slanging match. So here endeth the 5th lesson .
No more lads! lets get on with it or shut up.

Anyone know a good way to bend an airflow from a ducted fan through 90 degrees and get an even flow. I have tried a pvc 90 drainpipe joint but the airflow tend to go to one side, diagram attached may help explain.

The airflow goes straight until it hits a surface and then follows it, this means that although the pipe bends, the air will only follow one side. Sorry for quick poos descritpion, if you dont get what I mean let me know.

The only idea I have so far is adding vaines inside the tube.
Oh, its for a lift fan

The air leaving the blades has a swirl, so have to be straightened out, how long is the pipe? cause I think you will have to put in flow straighteners, and turn vanes! to counter the blade angle.

Ps. did you get my last email, sent this morning?

I would segest building your own duct with flow straigheners or relocate the fan so you dont have to waste enegry in a tube.

The thing i want to do is use the tail drive system of a model helicopter and have one engine for lift and thrust all geared together. That might solve ur problem

Hi Struts/Tegwin,

The fan unit incorporates flow straighteners (missed them off the diagram oops) so the flow is straight which means it all goes to the back curve (right hand side on the diagram).

If you have a wide thin tube you wont get the dead space, but why does it matter, aslong as all the air is getting down towards the ground isnt that all that counts

Since there are more hits on this Hovercraft thread than all of the other threads added together in the Boat forum it would appear that Hovercraft are popular enough for a separate forum . I'm not sure we should all raise trouble tickets though, hopefully yours will be enough.

its funny that you mention that
With the help of Eddy Matthews, the moderator of Yahoo groups which is the only
hovercraft only forum, I have started a new "hovercraft community" with all features that
hovercraft fans could want A full featured forum obviously (unlike Yahoo groups !) and also a photo album where all you
hovercraft fans can upload as much pictures as you want, they wil be displayed in hi res with various more features.
Just check out the site at
http://www.rc-hovercrafts.com

Also there soon will be more features like files and video sharing.
And there is already a very extensive link list.

talk to you all hovercraft fans there !

Kind regards,

Gerco Marsch
