hey guys i have a quick question for you all. i currently own 2 hpi baja's and they are extremely loud. embarrassingly loud. every time i run them i feel like a douche bag.  im converting one to electric and the other im going to leave as is. im thinking about getting a nitro but i dont want to be faced with the same overly loud issue. can any one tell me the sound difference between a gas and a nitro engine? any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you ask me, nitro sounds worse than gas. it's more high piched.

Well....I wouldn't say 'worse', but yes, it's more high-pitched.

Decibel levels would probably be less with a nitro, but not by much. I feel the engines in a Baja sound more like a loud motocross bike while a nitro just screams when at full throttle.

Both are loud.

If you don't want the noise, go electric.

Gas sounds reasonable, Nitro sounds annoying. Like a bee on crystal meth.

Going nitro will not solve the problem but it might go enough toward a solution that its worth considering. Even if you say nitro is about half as loud as gas, that's still very loud.

i have had a baja clone with a tuned pipe. felt the same way sometimes.

i have a nitro rustler with the 2.5 motor and a stock pipe, its not as loud. higher pitched, yes....but the sound doesnt carry as far. you dont have to yell at your buddy over the sound of the motor.

but, slap a tuned pipe on a nitro motor......or run a larger nitro motor and that all changes.

so, to sum it up....if you get a nitro get one thats not to big(.15-.25) and stick with the stock pipe.

Honestly if no one is complaining don't worry about it. Enjoy your RC's as they are. If you have a neighbor that does complain find another place to run. I run in both my neighborhood and the park and never had an issue. Yes I run nitro but they are far from being stock and pretty loud.

Depends on your pipe. A baja with the stock muffler just sounds like a weed eater, but the sound is amplified 10-fold with a tuned pipe. Nitro is higher pitched, but the sound doesn't carry as far, especially if you have a quiet exhaust.

Worth a try. My FG with Dominator torque pipe can drown out an entire nitro race. No doubt nitro is quite a bit quieter, especially if you put a short length of silicone around the stinger.

FWIW, there was a guy in ThunderbirdJunkie's neighborhood that did his mowing and weed eating at 7AM on Sundays.

He whined about the noise ThunderbirdJunkie's nitro cars made in the early afternoon to late evening.

You aren't the DB if you're running your cars when the majority of people are awake.

spend your money on a good boat muffler. if youre going to drop $250+ on a new nitro, drop $60 on the muffler. gizmo motors has some good ones, or just do a search. they wont hurt power all that much.

I grew up across the street from a bunch of Mexican guys, every Monday at 4AM, they would mow their damn yard with a weed eater. Not a mower, they would use a weed eater.

sounds like my neighbor 3am in winter goes out and snowblows... BUT leaves the snowblower on for 10 minutes before he even starts...
summer mows the lawn at 3-4am
wouldn't be an issue if not for 2 things
1 houses in chicago by me are literally 10 feet apart at most,
2 my bedroom window is facing his house...

on topic don't give a crap about others do what you want unless the police tell you otherwise

Honestly, if you like everything else about your baja, I'd keep it if I were you. Just get a muffler for it. A friend of mine owns a 5b SS(comes with a muffler and tuned pipe). We tried both exhausts and the muffler is a good deal quieter than the tuned pipe. I think HPI's tuned pipe is about the loudest exhaust available for it.

Nitro is not quiet, but it sounds awesome.. How could 30,000 RPM's not? Gassers sound like lawnmowers or other garden equipment. They're getting better, but they still sound oafish.

And electric just sounds like nothing, and is therefore in this guy's opinion mind-numbingly lame.

Just saying - if others wanna' say nitro sounds lame, they can have their opinion. And I have mine, so there it is..

Boring electrics definitely do sound lame...but as much as ThunderbirdJunkie is morally opposed to electric 1/8 buggies, the course pitch gears and high pitched whines they make sound way more evil than their nitro counterparts.

However, racing 1/8 electric buggies is the stupidest thing ever invented, and ThunderbirdJunkie hopes it will soon stop.

Unfortunately, neighbors often don't see it that way. Electric becomes a much more attractive option when you don't have that pissy neighbor coming over and complaining about the noise all the time.
