Wondering what battery would give the longest run time for a traxxas rustler vxl...

I'm gonna go with nimh for the time being...seen some video's of lipos burning up...scary...

So until I feel I need to I'll stick to a battery that won't burn my house down if I screw something up.

Welcome to RCU. The highest capacity NIMH will give longest runtime if the voltages are equal. SubC are up to about 5000 + mah now.

Higher MaH and higher voltage= better run time. 8.4 (or 7 cell) i think that lipo 2s are just as strong as 5000 mah 8.4 volts. Try this battery-  http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1389_1392_1859/products_id/215887/n/Traxxas-Series-5-7-Cell-84V-NiMH-Hump-Battery-Pack-w-Traxxas-Connector or cheaper-  http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/product/97/526/84-volt-Elite-5000-SC-Double-Stick-Hump-Pack.aspx it's up to you.

I'd say that an accurate number on the label is important. Name not so important , however the two names above can be trusted. So the numbers can also be trusted. I guess the name is important after all.

Any guesses to what an 8.4v 5000mah run time might be on a rustler vxl?

I keep hearing there are lipo batteries that you can run for an hour on...

Is 20-30 minutes the max for nimh?

About that, mabye 15 to 20 minutes. 15 on hard driving, and 20 on light driving

The lipo fires are from careless people.

Well he is using it in a car, lipos can and will get damaged from crashes and hard landings. But that's mainly limited to soft-shelled packs, the hard shelled ones generally only take damage from extremely hard crashes.

OP, get a 2s 5000mAh lipo, suitable balancing charger, and a metal ammo can from your local surplus store. Put the battery in the can, hook the charge and balance leads up, and you're good. Even if the battery does let go it won't burn anything with it as long as it's inside that metal can. If you have a genuine fireplace, that, too, will work, just stick it in there. Or you can buy a brand name lipo charging sack, which again will prevent it from burning your house down if it does go.
