I'm building an aircraft carrier top to use with our clubs indoor flying. we mostly fly Night vapors and embers...

I've built the carrier out of 1/2" thick foam core cut to the shape of an aircraft carrier. 34" wide 72" long ( not scale )

I plan on adding LEDs into the foam core,,, white lights down the center of the runway...

I was thinking of adding colored leds on the corners of the runway..

IS THERE A COLOR SCHEME TO THIS IN REAL CARRIERS?

like red on the right and green on the left????

Just wondering, cause if there is and I get it wrong I'll hear about it... lol

Status: offline 		not a carrier guy...but they use the ball on the left side of the deck no need to color code as you always land from the aft side....in RC I'd mark the round down with lights and the edges....you can always google it

Status: offline 		The landing area, from the round-down to the end of the angle deck is lit with off white perimeter lights. Additionally, there is center line lighting, also white. There is a sting of lights from the round-down down the stern of the ship to that align with the centerline. Lastly, the fresnel lens to the left of the landing area has a row of green datum lights with an orange-ish light in the center. See wikipedia page for diagrams.

Status: offline 		Here's a couple photos. Sorry the pictures aren't better, I lifted them from a videos from my Navy time. The "Dusk" one (camera on the glareshield) shows the lights in relation to the landing area. The "night" one, shows what it looks like from about 1/2 to 1/4 mile. It's dark - yep - there isn't much to look at. The lights are mostly off white. The lights down the fantail (vertical line dropping straight down in night picture) are red.

There's plenty of shots of Fresnel lens close up. On the diagram, it's about 2/3 of the way down the landing area off the left edge.

Status: offline 		Actually you're not seeing the refueling probe, it's the frame of the HUD. Airplane is a Super Hornet.

Status: offline 		Well, I'm one of the ones who think that rather than riot to support a coach, we should be focused on the victims and running down everyone who knew or should have known about this and did nothing.

Sadly, I think it's going to get worse before it gets better.

There's a great article in today's Centre Daily Times (available online) discussing the culture of silence here in Happy Valley. I think they're not prepared for the investigative media scrutiny they're about to face. They've manged to make Michael Vick look good by comparison. Sad.

Status: offline 		Pkevinb, I wouldn't talk smack about the Prowler. That was the only aircraft in the airwing that could kill you without physically touching you with anything. When the Growler comes fully on line, it's going to be just as deadly while being twice as fast

Status: offline 		In the last picture, the two red lights one over the other on the mast are the out of control lights.
Its a international rules of the road thing. Carrier has to run into the wind while conducting flight
operations. So by showing the two red lights, she's telling other ships that I won't be changing
course so don't get in my way. Day time it would be a flag hoist. They would also show this if
they were to have a steering gear breakdown.

There would also be the normal navigation lights, red to port, green to starboard. Can't see them
in the pictures because they are screened so that they can only be seen from bow to broadside or may
be slightly aft of broadside. Nothing to do with flight ops, rules of the road again.

Status: offline 		Should have known it would be an A-6 ordie talking smack about my bird. I was a Prowler ComNavRadar tech with VAQ 130 during the early to mid 80s. Three of the other squadrons on the Kitty Hawk during my two WestPacs were VA-145 flying A-6Es, VA-146 and 147, both flying A-7Es. What I found almost funny was that my quadrons 4 birds were faster in level flight than any other plane on board, INCLUDING THE TOMCAT. The F-14As were only faster when they went to a stage 1 or higher afterburner
