DVP....you have some very large and strange looking bugs Down Under mate...

Also, what's that brass handle looking thing for on the free standing pole (2nd to last pic, same as the one with the bug)?

It's all coming along quite nicely.

That post is an old house stump which was used in the old style houses here.

(Google Image search "Queenslander House" )

I got on to a company that removes/relocates old houses and scored 6 of these old stumps for a carton of beer.
If that stump could talk it'd have some stories to tell.
It'd probably be over 100 years old.
The wood itself is obviously older but it would have served as a house stump for about a century I reckon.
I went through 2 flap discs on the angle grinder getting all the old paint off and it's had 6 coats of clear laquer.

So the "brass" handle you're referring to is actually a steel brace.
I left it on there for the old rustic look.

I've got a few more of these posts around the place - 2 of which are being used as gate posts.

And now.....

I've had this old timber slab for ages and it's finally being put to use.

ooohhhhh...now that slab is impressive. Both for it's size and look, as well as the fact you can probably go back to the wife and say, "see, i told you some day it would come in handy."

Like that post story. You're going to have hours of discussion topics once that's finished and you start having mates over.

Very nice, DVP! I am still impressed by the cuts and how everything fits so well, good work! Any future plans for a walway leading up to it, or a small border garden of sorts?

Thank you.
Well the rest of the garden is getting a makeover this year as well.
When this deck is finished I'm gonna rip out the veggie gardens which you can see to the left in the last pic of the previous post.
Gonna lay some nice pavers there and put some plants in as well.

I'm not going to do a lot in the front of the new deck as yet as we're also looking at redoing the patio roof.
There will be some big machines involved in that and any sort of landscaping in front of the deck will only get in the way.

Right so some more progress today.
Started making the frame to hold the timber slab as seen in the post before last.

And a dog pic just for the sake of it.

DVP, why were Queenslander Houses built like that? Flooding or creepy crawlies?

Possibly both? My vote would go for wildlife though, they got things in Austrailia that make American skin crawl. Aussis get props in my book just for dealing with them haha

Flooding more than creepy crawlies (They get in anyway ) but mostly for airflow under the house.

Of course over the years most old highset houses have been enclosed downstairs for various reasons.
Garage, workshop, games room etc, which defeats the purpose.

The colors and wood grain are amazing, very nice! I am not sure if you already stated this, so I am sorry if you did, but what kinds of woods and finishers are you using on this project?

Cheers guys.

The wide floor boards are Kwila, the narrow ones are possibly Merbau (not sure about that as a mate scored them from a jobsite he was working at) and the bar top is supposedly a local kind of Cedar.

For the bar top I used a marine grade clear laquer.

I have yet to clean up the floor and seat boards and oil them.
Go back to the start of the thread and look at the floor boards compared to now.
They have weathered quite a bit.....

But they'll come good again.
Once cleaned I'll just use a standard deck oil to make them look good again.

I had already noticed that, and assumed as much

Have you ever used linseed oil? How well does that work?

After using some on that oak, I can see why. Wow. Really richened the woods color but kept it very natural looking. Nice shine too!

Well hello hello hello hello.
A bit more happening here again.

Have moved on to stage II of this part of the garden and am setting up the corner for a fire area.

First the old veggie gardens had to go...

Not silly enough to do that by hand so I got my mate and his mechanical shovel to do the work for me.

When that was taken care of I made a stone/concrete pad to sit the fireplace on....

And I need somewhere to keep the firewood too....

For the roof I'm thinking of building it like a planter box and put succulents or something on top to give a nice natural contrast against the fence.

I had this idea of making a seat using a couple of rocks and some large hardwood sleepers.
It had to look like the sleepers were just resting on the rocks with no visible fixings.

So this is what I came up with.

Once sanded and laquered they should look awesome.
Lovely red timber.

More to come

Ah, definitely must be that time of year all over. Just this past weekend we dug up EVERY flower bed 12 inches down, brought in all new top soil, new black mulch, put in new edging and planted about 100 summer bulbs of:

Dutch Iris
Firecracker Gladiolus
Hollyhock
Calla Lily
Tennessee ostrich Ferns
Caladium
Tiger Lily
and Crocasmias

It ended up being a 2-day project between me, her, two shovels and my little pickup truck

I came back the next day and put in a few more soil, mulch and bulbs around an old decorative wheelbarrow that came with the house. Cleaned that up too!

Next big project we are looking at is bringing in some clean fill dirt and levelling the whole yard, nice retaining wall between us and our neighbor, and rolling it all and seeding. We are using my connections for yard stuff and doing it all for nearly nothing. Have about $150 in the flower beds, will cost no more than $100 for the yard and the wall, etc.

Edit, forgot to mention I already had some Yucca plants and heirloom Rose of Sharons on the property already, tied it all in nicely and also managed to shrink my stand of spearmint from last year!
