Alright well, I keep goin so I'll keep posting.

Added thecolor to the damaged zim spots. Started by outlingin the area with a light that respresents the natural color of the zimmerit paste. I did this to create a transition between the exposed metal (painted red oxide) and the zim with tanks final 2-tone camouflage color. After outlining I filled in the middle areas with a red oxide mix. I found the grey area a little damp still so in these photos I've only "blocked-in" the colors. I'll let them dry over night then bring the red of the underlying steel closer to the zim putty's edge, right now it looks like a really prominent outline.

More to follow.........

Alright guys,
I'm continuing on with the weathering and I'm at one of those make it or break it stages.

Adding chipping, scratches, and peels, and this is one of those things that if done well can really make a tank stand out, but if not done well it can pretty much ruin all of the efforts up to this point. Trouble is this is very technically challenging and a skill I have not yet mastered, so each time I do it is a gamble. But I keep attempting it an seem to be slowly progressing at it.

I employ a couple of techniques. One usnig a sponge to apply really random chipping along edges then ad more deliberate and controlled scratches and peels with a brush. I will usually end with adding scratches with colored pencils. So here is round one............sponge work.

I start with a light color, dipping the sponge into the paint then blotting it dry (like you would a brush in drybrushing) on a paper towel, then I dab the sponge along a sharp edge or corner letting it "wrap around" the edge. Once I'm happy with the light color I repeat the process with an oxidized steel color I mix using flat brown and black.

Bare in mind this is just the first of 5 steps.

C'mon Joe do it, you don't need no stinkin Sherman, and you definitley don't need a break from the hobby, build an Elefant. I for 1 would be very anxious to see you work your magic on this kit. I'm sure when you were done it would put mine to shame, cause ya da man!

Dang it! Camera batteries died, got to re-charge, and it's almost 2am I think I need a recharge as well. I guess that's it for tonight. More tomorrow I promise, I gotta finish this damn thing!

Hey thanks a million that means a lot. I've told you before (in fact in this thread somewhere back around page 2 or 3) you are one of the guys on this forum that I've always admired and respected for what you do. You've had some pretty incredible builds. When I see one of you posts I'm always intrigued to see what your working on and will imddediately open it!

Thanks for the kind compliment!

The detail is simply amazing, I may have to sacrifice one of my HL tanks to practice learning this type of weathering.

Gentlemen, Thank you all for the kind words and support, it definitely helps keep the thread alive and me motivated to keep moving forward and share. First and foremost I have finished the tank (well almost! [LOL]) but as Friday turned into a 17 hour marathon of painting weathering and final assembly and testing i took pictures along the way but was not able to post here, so for that I apologize, but bear with me and i promise I'll take through to completetion.

Yellow, it was just some re-chargeable double A's that needed a little juice, I wouldn't want to change camera's now anyway. I absolutely love my SLR (It's a Fuji Film Finepix S7000) I got it with my first paycheck writing for the model magazine and I chose that particular model becasue it was what was being used at the time by Finescale Modeler, Aerospace Modeler Magazine, and AFV Magazine.

maintcoder, the beauty of these material and techniques are you don't have to sacafice any model. The reason I'm willing to take risks and experiment is these are all water based products, if you don't like the way somethig looks wash it off with a little soap and water and at worst you might have to use a little Windex (glass cleaner)

Here we go again,
Ok that last progess post I made we had just finishd up the initial sponge work. And I mentoned this gives you a very random look to the chips and peels and is a great way to cover, hard edges and corners, high traffic ware areas and around hatches, the top of the gun etc. Next we add the more detailed brush work.

Same concept but the scratches and scrapes are more intentional, and not spuratic or random. This is good for adding longer scrapes, in in the middle of a flat area. There is two approaches to get the same result, and it's the modeler's choice which method best suits your particular situation or skill set.

You can start by painting the scratch or peel in the same dark oxidized steel color we used with the sponge, then go back and use the lighter grey color to add some random outlinging to the scratch. This takes a very steady hand and a small sharp pointed round brush (like a #000)The outlinging adds a lot of depth to the scratch.

The second method will yield the same results, but IMHO is a little easier to execute I first paint the entire scratch or peel using the lighter color, then go back in and fill in the center with the steel color. In some peel I also chose to fill the center with red oxide instead of the steel color i had made to make it look the scratch only went through to the primer coat. This just adds one more layer or dimension to add to the realism

Whichever method you choose there are a few simple rules to follow for this to be successful.

1. This is easy to overdue, so go lightly, fewer truly is better and more realistic
2. Always try to keep the edges of the peel or scrape sharp and angular (soft and round edges don't look realistic at all)
3. Put them in logical areas where the tank would scrape against things in real life (consult your references often)

Squid
Sorry guys it's taken over 40 minutes to upload these few pics (sorry I duplicated the first one) and the sight just sits and spins, takes seriously like 4-5 minutes per picture to upload, looks like they having problems, I guess I'll have to try again tomorrow

After the first round of brush work I then went back and added a little more sponge work and then some some more peels and scratches with the paint brush.

Same techniques just thought it needed a little more in a few areas. As I mentioned earlier I added some scratches chips and peels using each tenique, but rather than unsing the oxidized steel color I used red oxide to represent the primer

Y'all should see this magnificent beast in person.  Streetsquid's Elefant is truly sublime in it's perfection, just like all his vehicles.  I didn't think he could surpass the craftsmanship of his King Tiger, but this Elefant really is on a whole new scale of brilliance.

Wow! You guys really are gonna make me blush. Seriously THANK YOU for all the kind words of praise. Believe me when I tell you my dad taught me many years ago it's better to be lucky than good, and I often think I just got lucky in the way things turned out. This Elefant has had plenty of challenges, but i just kept pushing ahead and luckily it all seemed to work out in the end. Alright what do you say we wrap this thread up (RCU permitting)

Alright,
So after we have done the sponge and brush work we continue with adding smaller surface scratches and marks using colored pencils (yes colored pencils).

This method is really easy, but also easy to overdue, so like I mentioned before better to go lightly and step back and observe your progress often from different views. If I have the chance, I will often take the tank outside in natural sunlight in between each painting and weathering steps to see the progress.

I think the biggest secret to success here is investing in a GOOD set of high quality artist pencils. Now my set os over 20 years old and to replace it roday would be upwards of $80 bucks. I use Berol Prisma Color pencils, now the good thing is that you can get then in smaller color sets and buy them individually at most art supply and craft stores such as Michaels and Hobby Lobby.

I will usually select a half dozen colors to use, sharpen the pencil then loosely holding the unsharpened end between just my thumb and forefinger I lightly "jab" the pencil at the surface of the tank. The pencil will slide and skate across the surface creating small random scratches and scuffs.

Color selection does make a difference and I will usually choose 3-4 colors lighter than the base color of the tank and 2-3 colors darker than the base color. For this Elefant I used light yellow, light green, and tan as well as a dark brown and a charcoal grey

So now we have run the gammet a multitude of techniques, and we focused a lot on producing wear n tear. Mutiple colors, techiques, tools and methods layered upon one another to create a battle worn look. But even with all these scapes, scratches, chips and peels, it all still looks rather flat and a little dull and lifeless. This tank may be beat but it's not down n out for the count, oh no its still operational so finally we need to breathe a little life into to show crew movement and the freshest and newest type of wear.

I've never been a fan of using silver, steel or aluminum to show shiny spots, but I do beleive in giving some of this a metallic sheen to help pull off the look that this tank is meant to look like it was made of metal. And IMHO I have found the perfect tool to do so.

I use an artist's pencil that has extremely soft lead and produces a very dark (darker than regular graphite pencils) dark metallic "rub". They are simply called an EBONY drawing pencil and again are available at any craft or art supply store for under a $1 (US Dollar). Using htis pencil i add just a trace of metallic shine to some of the dark oxidized steel areas. A little goes a long way into selling the idea so again step back and examine your work from often and from several angles.

So now we'll get inot using some powdered pigment to replicate a little Mother Nature. Using piment I'll add dust and dirt, as well as reain and rust streaks to the verticle surfaces. simply load a chissle edged brush with the desired color and pull straight down. Once you have established the "streak" continue to stroke the bristles of the brush down the streak without adding any more pigment. This will soften and blend the streak into the surrounding paint, giving you full control over how stark or subtle this effect is.

I also lke to use a little more advanced technique to create accumulated dirt an dust on some of the horizontal surfaces. I scoop small pile of pigment and use a brush to spread the dry pigment aoround hatches, inot crevices and detail areas, and especially on top of the fenders. The I load my airbrush with acrylic thinner and turn the regulator as low as it will go (about 5psi) then starting back 12-15 inches I start to saturate the area with thinner ( any closer and the air pressure will simply blow the dry pigment away). As the pigment gets wet I move closer and closer to the pile saturating the area and dissolving the pigment into the puddle of thinner. Set it aside and let it dry. The thinner will eveporate leaving the most realistic accumulation of dirt and dust.
