Status: online 		Got all the parts cut out today. May be able to glue up fuse or wing tonight.

Question: How do I hold the ribs down while sheeting the wing? There doesn't seem to be enough room to pin down the ribs to the board and there's no spar or anything to glue them to in order to keep them from moving.

Status: offline 		I'm not sure it's how I did mine, but in the past I've dusted 3M77 on the plans then put wax paper over the plans. After you have that down spray the wax paper with 3M77 and stick the ribs down. You can put CA on the ribs then put the skins on, or use wood glue on the ribs and weigh the skins down with sand bags.

Status: offline 		It's been a while but I think I tacked each rib at the leading edge with the trailing edge hanging a little over the edge of the table, then carefully pulled the skin down and tacked it to the rear of the ribs. After setting, I removed it from the table and finished gluing the ribs to the skin with CA. Working carefully, it can be done without warping it. Good luck.

Status: online 		Tee Bee, I ended up doing it just the opposite. I pinned the front of the ribs down over the plan and then put some medium ca on the back, carefully gluing the sheeting down on the back 1/4 inch only. Then I pinned that edge down, pulled the pins from the front, used medium ca on the rest of the rib lengths, and pressed the skin down. Worked well.

Status: offline 		Test flew mine for the first time since the fall. Blew the prop off, mines got a little electric motor in, it that uses 5x2 props that I glue on the 1mm prop drive. It'll be roaring on the 24th.

Status: online 		Got the wing done last night. Had to work tonight so didn't have a chance to work on it. Will build the fuse tomorrow night.

Regarding the finish, I just thought I would use some clear, low shrink butyrate dope. I'd like to thin it but not sure how far I can go with it. I plan on brushing it on. I thought two or three thinned coats would be best with light sanding in between to knock down the bumps. What suggestions does anyone have on the ratio of thinner to dope? ...Or does the TLAR (that looks about right) method work?

Status: offline 		  I did mine basically the same way Tee Bee did his. But then I put 1/32 sheeting on the bottom also. I raised, and rounded the leading edge, and added ailerons too.
 I've ordered the motor, but don't know when it'll get here. I still have to clear it, and add some color trim.

 I built mine while I was scratch building the DR-1

If you are using model dope 25% thinner should work o.k. If you are using Randolph Dope, about 50% should be fine. I have found that Randolph out of the can is quite a bit thicker than model. Brush fast and the streaking will disappear.

Ailerons?

  I added ailerons because I like to beable to do rolls, and to level the wings on landings, and I like to fly inverted. I took out the dihedral, and also added a elevator to it.


You going to do a thread on the Triplane?

  Been thinking about it. I took a bunch of building pictures of it.

That's a slick way to set up aileron horns - I've never seen that before. Are you using tubing or wire insulation. For light weight applications, I would bet that silicone insulation from the high strand count wire would work nicely - very flexible and not too prone to fatigue cracking.

     Yep, it's wire insulation from some small high temp wire I have. I believe it's silicone. soft yet strong enough, and holds tight! It's easy to adjust, but stays where you put it. Best thing is it's a light weight setup.

Status: offline 		Tim, sorry for the late reply regarding the throws. I got mine down from the ceiling tonight to check it out and prep it for flying tomorrow for the 50th anniversary. Anyway, I realized that I never got around to programming it to the DX8. I used to use a DX6i and I didn't save the previous data when programming all the planes to the new transmitter. Sooo, now I've got to start over adjusting the hi/lo rates. That's a shame since I had it dialed in the way I liked it last time out.

Sorry about that. I hope to do some testing/tweaking tomorrow and get it dialed in again.

Status: offline 		I got two flights in on mine today. Woohoo! I tried to run the prop backward as Ken Willard did but it kept flying off during the startup. Then I attached it normally and flew it in "high gear".

One of our club members shot the video for me. After I get it loaded, edited, and uploaded I'll post the link.
