It is with great pleasure that SkyMac of Bowling Green, Ky will be hosting the first World event in control line speed Oct. 19,20,21.
http://bluegrassworldcup.com/index.html
Please plan to attend and watch the world flyers hit 200mph in some of the classes.
If you have any questions please send a PM.

That will be in 2012, of course.

You guys should mail a flyer to KC Hobbies in Archdale, NC. There are some of the best CL speed flyers in the US in that area. At least they were.....

What is it then?

Looks like F2A to me. As well as the pilot who does have some experience with these things.

Regards

F2a as defined by the FAI is a 2.5cc engine running on FAI fuel and dual cable lines, the 4 main classes for c/l are:
F2a Speed
F2b aerobatic
F2c Team racing
F2d combat
A typical F2a plane.

Looks like one to me. I used to fly them until I couldn't run that fast. 80% methanol and 20% castor.  It is a bit trickier to get them to run on that but it goes ok.  I was doing about 150 mph in the 1970's.  The record was about 160 something then.  I am sure I have a plane around somewhere but can't find it.  It needs a shutoff to use now anyway.  It is a lot of farting around for very little air time, but when it is right it is worth it.

Ummm..actually it is and he used a Hallam Irvine .15 (although I suspect rather well put together ).

There are two classes of F2A where records can be set. The most obvious is during a sanctioned FAI competition (like a Nationals or worlds) where there are a set number of attempts allowed. The second is where a modeller thinks he has a good shot at a national or world record and arranges to have official FAI judges and timekeepers to meet at wherever he wants to make the attempt as Paul Eisner did in that record run. That way he could make as many attempts as he liked.

2012 BlueGrass World Cup:

Dudes and Dudettes: I'm the guy that heading up the big time World Cup Control Line contest here in Bowling Green. Dennis Baach is on my committee that will do all the planning for this most excellent event. Here's a link to the events web site. Please come and have a big time with the rest of us.

http://bluegrassworldcup.com/

What you will see is the best of the best. It's an awesome thing to watch a flyer in the middle of a control line circle fly a model at about 190mph. The pulse jets at 140 decibles is also cool to listen to. We're the home of the Corvette, Mammoth Cave, and a lot of other very cool vacation stuff.

Great flight and a great job of breaking his own record but what we are watching on the video is not F2A unless the rules have changed to allow line ties.

Doesn't FAI also recognize some unlimited speed records divided by engine displacement? By unlimited, I mean that have far fewer restrictions on equipment and so on. I don't know where those 'record attempts' are defined in the FAI Sporting Code, but I seem to remember seeing an announcement for a 1cc and also a 10cc record some time ago. If memory serves (and it may NOT), there were no restrictions on line diameter - only that a pull test be passed.

I had heard of that too a long time ago.  I believe there is a video of someone from eastern europe setting a record with a Russian FAI motor made a little bigger that went over 200 mph.  Something in the comments was about  a B speed and 'let's see the Americans beat that'  and I thought it was the larger FAI class because a B speed has really thick lines, and I don't think a .15 could do 200 mph on those lines.  They had different rules.  It likely wasn't F2A if there are line ties (groupers) unless it was a long time ago like 20 years. So I believe Mr. Mathison is right, I think I timed him at the Nats if he is the same guy..  He likely would know the rules very well.

Under FAI rules for CL speed there's only one class and that's F2A which is for engines up to 2.5cc (meaning you could enter with a Cox .049 if you wanted to ). Line groupers have been banned for a very long time and twisting of lines is also banned as is covering the lines with any kind of liquid or coating material intended to reduce coefficient of drag. There's also a minimum seperation of lines at the leadouts and handle. Pull tests are 50G and have to be repeated 3 times.

Individual countries of course can have whatever events they like for different engine sizes but any claims for a world record won't be recognised by the FAI otherwise someone could claim a record for a steam powered speed model . Ya gotta draw the line somewhere.

This prompted me to Google FAI World Records which took me to the FAI Site where all their World Records are listed. They list a category called F2 Open with records for Speed, <1cc Swept Volume, 1.00 - 2.5 cc, 2.51-5 cc, 5.01 - 10.0 cc. The current records are (and I don't know how this will format on the screen here - I'll try to make it look something like a table) -

Speed (swept volume less than 1.00 cm3): 130 - Aeroplane - Piston Motor 251.0 km/h 1984-08-22 Zhao Jihe (CHN)
Speed (swept volume 1.00 to 2.50 cm3): 131 - Aeroplane - Piston Motor 340.0 km/h 2009-09-19 Sándor Kalmár(HUN)
Speed (swept volume 2.51 to 5.00 cm3): 132 - Aeroplane - Piston Motor 335.8 km/h 2009-10-10 Sándor Kalmár (HUN)
Speed (swept volume 5.01 to 10.00 cm3): 133 - Aeroplane - Piston Motor 345.0 km/h 2003-08-25 Ken Morrissey (GBR)

Also -
F2A Speed in competition: 134 - Aeroplane - Piston Motor 307.4 km/h 2011-07-29 Ken Morrissey (GBR)

So if the video in question shows Mr. Morrisey breaking his own world record, and he is not at an organized competition, he obviously was using something larger than a .15 engine, the line groupers are legal and this is NOT F2A speed. I didn't search out the rules which govern the F2 Open Speed record attempts, so don't know what restrictions are in place. Also, his new record is not yet recognized.

The Hungarian ones are the ones I was thinking of.  The 2.5 and larger class, he probably put in a bigger piston or stroked crank on the same type plane.  It wasn't F2A, but was still pretty fast and noteworthy.

This comment prompted the reply that it has already been done, which took this whole thread off on what is or isn't the FAI speed record. The best answer is that in F2A the record is still less than 200 (mph) - 307.4 Km/H = 191 Mi/H - so close, but not quite there. Be removing the restrictions on lines, etc., a 2.5 cc powered speed ship HAS broken 200 - 347 Km/H = 211.2 Mi/H.

So there you have it everyone was correct.

Oh, and a FAI speed plane going 190 mph is great fun to watch too.  Even better to hang on to.  Put on your dancing shoes.

I remember reading somewhere that the lines cause something like 90% of the total drag which is why the line rules are so specific. Top engines produce about 2.7HP or over 1000HP/litre which is like a supercharged, nitro burning drag racer making 8000HP. Not bad for a toy engine .
