I can't believe that they are almost ready to ship but Futaba still haven't released the full specs. I also am a bit (but not completely) surprised that people are willing to part with $3000 without really knowing what it can do.

I agree, I see the same with people buying turbines before we've ever seen a test engine running. Alot of money for a gamble.

Looks like they have left the Door open for JR to beat futaba again

Siiiigh. I really don't know what it is about JR users and their constant need to denigrate Futaba. If there was a JR18X that was proven to be or even generally considered to be better than the 18MZ then fine but, as they saying goes, those in glass houses shouldn't throw old-hat 12ch radios

Henke, this is hardly a new turbine from an unknown manufacturer! It is a new flagship model from one of the largest RC radio suppliers in the world. Not really a "gamble" in my book.

Marc are you confusing JR users with MPX ones? they normally love to preach LOL

It looks good, is it's any less bulky to hold than the 14MZ? I liked the feel of the sticks when i had a go on a 14MZ but not the way it sat in my hand

I was going to post about this transmitter as well, because it seems grossly overdue. With $200 iphones and $700 iPads, how come our $1,000-1,500 tx's don't have decent color touch screens? I know they produce many more phones etc reducing the per unit cost, but this technology has been around for quite a while now.

Ask AT&T to brand it and it will also cost "$200", atleast on the price tag :-)

I knew someone was going to mention that! Yes the phones are subsidized, but ipads arent, and unlocked iphones are $500 or so. Either way, it pales next to the 18mz's $3000 price.

Dubd brought up a good point regarding the UI. Its not just the hardware, they need to spend a lot of time creating a simple, easy to use UI. It will be interesting to see what JR's response will be.

Well to put my (another) two cents worth, yes it's a lovely bit of kit, as regards a turbine, it's rather essential if you need to power your jet model but you do not need a $3000 radio to fly it, unless of course it is a top of the range top end model jet, with more functions than you have fingers. When I went over to JR a couple of years ago, after being a dyed in the wool Futaba man, as I was not too sure about the new Futaba's when they were having problems with "Brown-outs" etc. I moved over to JR. It's been a bit of a learning curve changing systems, and the DSX9 was the latest model out at the time, which I paid just under £700 for, the most I have ever spent on a transmitter.

So it's rather a case of "Horses for courses" for my mundane jets, my JR tranny will have to suffice for a few years, if you’re a Futaba man and money is no object, well no contest, I love jets and turbines, and want the best safety gismos for models, but do I really need a transmitter that talks to me while I’m flying, and a camera to take a photo of my model etc?

Dunc,

Nicer to hold. More balanced, less bulky and they've moved the sticks up slightly. Looks a little plainer but that means no annoying nooks and crannies for dirt/dust to get into.

Also, you need to press 2 buttons to turn it off - should help Keith avoid making the same mistake twice

Yes $3000 is alot, but also Galaxy S2 (I'm not an "i" guy) have sold in 10.000.000 pcs in half a year, I guess that explains the price too. However adding another $50 and getting a screen usable outdoors would be nice :-)

BTW, in Sweden the Iphone 4S costs $1200 without any sim lock :-)

I’ve always thought that our radio equip was way over priced compared to the little pieces of technological wizardy we carry around in our pockets. It must be purely market driven. There certainly isn’t any rocket science going on in that video.

I’ve also wondered why the manufacturers haven’t taken advantage of virtually everyone having an iPhone, Droid, iPod, iPad, or laptop available to them at all times. What the hell do you need a high res touch screen, a camera and a clunky GUI on the Tx for? Ya’ can’t use it while you’re flying. Take all that stuff off the Tx, write some apps and sell a cable. It would be really nice to program on a dedicated device with an intuitive animated graphical program (“I want my plane to do this.” Click…) and up-load it to my Tx. I’d pay good money for that. Not this.

Love the screen, but that user interface is terrible!

Drop the pom poms dude... it's getting a little old!!!!

I've owned the 14MZ for two years when it first came out. In the age of the iPhone, this is inexcusable. The UI on the 18MZ looks straight from 1980 on a high resolution screen. For $3000, I expect more. Call me crazy....

I'm a software developer for consumer user interfaces used by millions of people and I know a sh*#& UI when I see it.

Why are we comparing this to a I-phone. Should'nt you compare to it's actual competition, say JR, Graupner, Hi-tec etc. I'm grateful that they are constantly improving and upgrading, may not be able to aford it myself but it pushes the others and eventually the technology will trickle down to lower priced radios.

PS: if Apple did'nt anticipate 1million sales on day of release the I- whatever would cost a whole lot more.

Give me a break, $1500 for TX!  Way over priced.  My iPhone does more than that for $200.  They keep going and only the 1%er will be able to aford it.

Mark,

I agree with you hands down.

The average mid priced sports jets(carf Flash) etc for example with  a JC 120SX sitting on the tarmac ready for its first flight costs £5000. = $8000. minimim.(could all be gone in an instant).

You can buy a basic mobile phone for £40.00 or an Iphone/top end Blackberry for £400-£500 . Look how many people have the latter, loads.

Why do you guys winge about the price of a top end radio when it is the most important part of your kit.

Ok if you have a Boomerang Nano you do not need a 18MZ but for the average scale/sports jet flyer this radio will do everything you will ever need.

Phil.

Why do people moan...................... Because for a box of electronics it is way way over priced and for the average pilot in this hobby it is out of their price range. Also full of unessary stuff that will never be used in my opinion. Still if you want the bling for what ever reason get one and enjoy it I say. It is also worth remembering that many people in this hobby have normal jobs earning normal wages and we are in a very deep recession.

Guys if Apple were to have ever made a Tx it would look nothing like we would ever have imagined - the word bling would have been inadequate!

I am an 'average' flyer, in fact probably 'below average' but can appreciate there is a market for this Tx, the fact it costs $3000 is really irrelevant, for those who have the money and/or need the functions then great. In fact the more who do buy it the greater the chances it will drop in price over time due to manufacturing costs and market pressure, then maybe others lower down the food chain like me could afford it.

Its good to see a manufacturer pushing the boundaries, often with these companies being first to a particular milestone kinda allows them to dictate the pricing - if JR had a top notch 18ch Tx priced at $2000 I'm not sure Futaba would sell many 18MZ's - they don't so that's the way it is.

The 18MZ has allowed me to pick up a nice low mileage 14MZ so for me its had a good result.

It's not for the average pilot in this hobby, for them, Futaba has many different, lower priced options.
