Think I understand the fact that 4.8 volt will last longer then 6 volt for the same mah rating. Explained to me as 2 tanks with 300 gallons of water and a 1" pipe to drain. If you put 100 lbs of pressure on one and none on the other and open valves at the same time they both have the same amount of water (mah) but the one with 100 lbs. (6 volts) will drain faster?

OK. if that is true how does a NIMH last longer (more flight time) then a NICD at the same voltage and mah rating with the same load? True or False?

Battery Clinic says, "FALSE" If they have the same voltage, same capacity and the same load they will be the same run time. Actually Ni-MH will have a slightly higher internal resistance so it will have a slightly lower voltage under the same load and therefore the current drain will be less giving the appearance of longer run time, but then you have to consider how low you want the voltage to go. It may turn out to be less run time to a specific voltage. Confused yet?

Should I just stay with NICD ?

Battery Clinic: If they are serving your needs why not, they cost less, are more durable, will take more abuse, overcharge resistant.

Thanks for helping

Maybe if somebody would design a mah gauge (that would hold a peak reading) to install between battery and rec. for real world use in airplane. Then you could discharge at that setting with the new programable cyclers. (Dymond Super Trubo that I just got a couple weeks ago)

If you really want the nitty gritty down and dirty details check out the technical documents at Sanyo's web site or some other battery manufacturers web site. All the specs are laid out for you.

If a battery has 100 MAh in it that is all it will store, reguardless of chemistry. A 100 MAh NiCd has the same charge capacity as a 100 MAh NiMH. However, each will have their own unique discharge properties and voltage curves, depending upon how fast you discharge, temperature, and even the physical battery design such as plates, venting, etc.

Most of the hype about MiMH IMO in not based on truth. NiMH are fine batteries. So are Lithium Ion. But they are expensive, require peak prediction charger for rapid charge, and really aren't any lighter if you consider you need extra cells to have the same voltage under load as NiCd.

I have never read the battery clinic stuff, but I agree. I see no real advantage (and a lot of disadvantages) to NiMh. I only have NiCds... Sanyo and SR. Only possible exception might be a indoor model where any weight savings is critical.

The key to NIMH vs NICAD is that of weight. You can run a greater number(mah) of nimh and still match the weight of a nicad. This then gains greater run time. I always use one more nimh cell and normally it is still lighter than the nicad pack.
