Flying today with my zdz40 and the wood prop loosened up. Heard the noise and got it on the ground. Found that apparently the wood prop compressed enough that the prop bolts loosened. Any way two of them broke off flush with the prop hub. I now need to get it off of the engine where I can drill them out. Is there some trick to this that I'm missing? It moved out about 1/8 inch and I can't seem to make anymore progress. Does it take a special puller? I've tapped and pulled. Don't want to mar the engine. Looks like just a press fit with a key. Anybody took the hub off. Need some suggestions. Don't really want to send it in for repairs. I think I can do this myseld if I can just get this thing apart.

The easiest way to fix it is to cut a groove in the shank of the broken screw with a dremel tool. Then use a screwdriver to remove the bolt.

The hub is a press fit on the crankshaft. You need heat and a puller that will thread into the hub bolt holes. You can also use a metric bolt to thread into the crankshaft and rap on the bolt with a hammer. Don't use too much heat or you will weaken the magnet.

The broken screws are slightly recessed in the hub and I dont know of anything small enough to cut slots in such a small recess. I will have to get the hub off. I am reluctant to use heat. Maybe I can find some kind of puller. Thanks

It needs heat for removal. For press fits, heat is your friend.

Don't heat it, don't pull it off, don't grind anything.
Go to your local parts house, (automotive) and get a set of stud removers. They have a very coarse reverse thread.
Drill a small hole in the end of the broken stud, insert the stud puller and tighten it backwards with a wrench. As it sinks into the stud it should unscrew the broken part from the prop adapter.

I've used stud removers a gillion times on all sorts of equipment and have always, with one exception, had good luck.

Sometimes the broken bolt is easy to rotate. I have had the same problem but I managed to unscrew the bolts with a sharp needle. Thry it.

Thanks to all that responded. I was able to get them out by drilling and using a small screw extractor. I won't make the mistake of not frequently checking the prop bolts when using wood props!
