Ron, You are going to need a much more substantial structure to secure that wing than what is shown on the plans. I built a very none scale Champ and reinforced the cabane area with as much spruce, plywood and gussets as I could fit in that area. You will definitely have to sacrifice some scale accuracy to achieve it. Your build is great and I wish I had the room to do one that size. Keep it up. Dan.

Ron, great work on your build so far. I really like the idea of installing wing tubes. The thot of only the struts holding on the wing makes me nervous.

I wonder if you could help with some info. You see, I'm refurbishing a 20 year old BUSA 1/3 Cub for a club member and I need to know where the engine thrust line is supposed to be on the firewall. Any chance you have a pic of that part of the plans?

Thx in advance.

I will look to see what the plans show tonight and get back to you on the thrust line.

luvbipes,

You don't have to worry about the struts holding the wings. I have 5 BUSA 1/3 scale and the wings are held by 4 screws and the struts. I do loops and rolls all day, and the wings are secured. This is actually scale.

I must admit that putting the wings and taking them apart is a pain with the 4 screws that BUSA designed, so if you want to simplify life, the idea of wing tubes is the way to go. Otherwise, the wings are not going anywhere...

Grandslam, wow five 1/3 Cubs, thats pretty cool. I would love to see some pictures, they are good building inspiration. I decided on the tubes for putting it together at the field. My 1/4 H-9 has one tube and assembly is pretty easy.

Phil, do you still have the drill jigs you created for your build? I am wondering if that approach would work for this wing?

Yea, I still have them..  You are welcome to have them.  If they aren't correct for your plane we can make some.

For those who haven't seen the guides I'll attach a few photos.

Just make sure the hingeline is the same for your wing.  The ailerons are top hinged on the hingeline and the flaps are setup with the hingeline below the wing creating a gap between the wing and the flap when deployed.

I will bring them on Monday, if you are flying.

Phil

Ron, thanks for the quick reply. If I read the pics correctly, the thrust line is 5.75" up from the bottom of the firewall. Much appreciated!

I have been studying your build thread, I think this will work great. I take it you drilled the holes with sharpened tubing?

Great build thread. Still undecided if I should jump into one of these babys. These Cubs will ever be in my heart.
Had a Great Plane with a Saito 91 for five years.
Learning a lot here so keep up the good work.

Since phil did the all the experimental work on his hinge locations, I can set my hinge blocks from his R&D. I used my new sander to quickly sand the LE angle for all the hinge blocks. It sure beats the way I used to do it.

I cut some scrap balsa and bolted into my strut hardware so I can leave it on the wing and not accidently bend it when setting the wing on the bench.

I ordered Robart Gear today. I plan on building the BUSA gear, but I doubt I can replicate how nice the Robart gear looks. My silver soldering is very inconsistent. Perhaps building the BUSA gear will be good practice.

I am subscribed. I built a BUSA SC 12 years ago, but eventually sold it. As many of you know, I purchase hobby estates, and a recent buy out has a BUSA 1/3rd J-3 in the inventory. I am clearing off the work bench!!! Lumber yard in a box!!!!

Building the Cabin Top. The wing tobes acted as a jig for this step holding the airfoil ribs in place and lining everything up.
My bar clamps were not wide enough so I ganged them together. It ain't pretty, but it worked.

Left side cabin top complete. It bolted right up without any adjustment or persuasion. Pretty nice fit for a first try.

Have you hit www.airliners.net?

Just go there and do a sarch for "PA-18". Once you find one you like do another search with its tail number to find all the pics of that plane.

You'll find hundreds of photos.

Really coming along.

Phil

Love the pic of the Christmas tree, a really cute gal and a wing half that almost reaches the ceiling. Only thing missing is a building buddy, as in dog.
Question for you. In one of your pics I see an angle cutter/ sorta like a pair of wire cutters. Do these things work on say, 1/4 balsa.?
Wishing you and yours a happy and prosperous New Year. Really enjoying your build log. Great photos, keep them coming.

dick
