David,

I don't mind at all that you post on this thread. Hopefully we can all learn something from each other. Your engine looks brand new, nice. I'll post as soon as I get a chance to do some more testing. I changed my tuned pipe from 15 5/8" (glow plug to high point of pipe) to 17" today. I was told that is the length to start with. With the pipe at 15 5/8" I was turning 13,900 with a Handcrafted Prop 10 3/4" x 7 1/2-7". The square tip Zinger 11" x 7 1/2" was turning 12,900 with the same setup and needle setting. With the Zinger prop the OPS would die as soon as the nose was held straight up. With the Handcrafted prop the engine would lean out slightly when the nose was held straight up. I think the Zinger 11" x 7 1/2" prop is too big for my OPS. I'll get new rpm readings next time out with the pipe at 17". Also have an APC 11"x7" and 11"x6" prop to try.

Ralph

Thanks Ralph,

I look forward to your further tests. Now that you sorted out the pressure leak from the system, hopefully things will run more reliably. BTW, what fuel and plug are you running?

David.

David,

Bob Oge uses the side exhaust OPS engines in tether cars and can probably help with any questions you have. I will PM contact data.

David,

I'm running PowerMaster fuel. 5% nitro, 11% castor, 11% Synthic . At the moment I have a Fox plug in the OPS. The RPM drops a little when I remove the glow starter so I plan to try some different plugs. I just received a McCoy MC-59 plug. It is rated as a hot plug. I think that when your fuel is low nitro that you are suppose to run a hot plug. I use to run a Fireball plug in the OPS back in the 70's but I don't think they are produced anymore. I can't remember the name of the company that made them right now. Maybe it was Sonic or something like that.

When I was working on my Saturn/OPS last night I discovered that the pressure fitting on the tuned pipe was about 50% stopped up with hard black crude. That makes about 3 things that were wrong. No wonder the OPS was going lean on verticals. I can't wait to get out to the flying field to see what difference these corrections will make.

Also when I was cleaning the pressure fitting it broke off. So now I'm going to put a new one in that is a 10-32 fitting and I'm going to locate it at the high point of the pipe. The old fitting was a 6-32 that was located on the header about 2" from the exhaust.

Cees Wester (Taurus Flyer) from the Netherlands had sent me a PM suggesting to check the pressure fitting (Post #13). At the time I thought the fitting was okay because the fuel was flowing through it when I filled the tank. I guess I should have taken the fuel line (overflow) off and checked it at that time. The partial stoppage of the fitting had to be affecting the tank pressure. We'll see how it goes the next time out.

Thanks Cees,
Ralph

you can sing all the songs, but all you have to do if your engine rpm drop when you remove the plug is to increase nitromethane to 15 per cent...
believe me or not, but try!

Just got back from the flying field. It was about 43 degrees, cloudy with a 10 MPH wind from the north right down the runway.

Things went very well today. Here's the things I tried and the results:

Since my last flying session I lengthened the tuned pipe from 15 5/8" to 17". Replaced fuel tank that had a hole in it (and fuel lines). Installed a new 10-32 pipe pressure fitting at the high point of the pipe.
Results: I started the engine exactly with all the settings the same, Fox glow plug and the Max Dailey 10 3/4 x 7 3/4-7 wood prop. Engine turned 12900 rpm. That's 1000 rpm below when the pipe was 15 5/8" rather than the new 17". I had to turn the high speed needle in about 1/2 to 3/4 turn which I believe is the result of the pressure tap being larger and moved to the high point of the pipe. The engine did not sag or lean out at all when the nose was held vertical.

I then replaced the Fox glow plug with a new McCoy MC 59. With the fox plug the idle rpm would drop noticeably when the glow driver was removed. With the MC 59 the idle rpm did not drop.

I then installed the APC 11x7 composite prop in place of the Max Dailey prop. No other changes. The rpm was about 12500. Engine high needle had to be opened very slightly. The engine leaned out a little bit when nose was held vertical. Didn't seem as good as the Max Dailey prop.

I then installed the APC 11x6 composite prop. The rpm jumped to 13060. Sounded real good and did not lean out or drop rpm when nose of plane was held vertical. Didn't seem as good as the Max Dailey prop but very close.

Things leaned so far: NEVER flip an APC composite prop. I had a cloth glove on and the TE of the prop still cut through the glove and made a small cut on my finger, not deep enough to bleed but it scared me. The 5% nitro fuel needs a hot glow plug. The MD 10 3/4 x 7 3/4-7 prop sounds best followed by the APC 11 x 6 and then the APC 11 x 7. The pipe pressure seems to be better with the 10-32 fitting located at the high point of the pipe.

I decided to fly with the APC 11x6 prop. First thing I noticed the take off was a little sluggish. In the air the engine sounded great but the plane just didn't have the get-up and go I expected.

Landed and changed to the APC 11x7. Nothing else was changed. The APC 11x7 seemed to have better take off speed. In the air the engine sounded perfect (better than on the ground). The plane had good speed and did not lean out at all in the vertical up-lines.

We ran out of time so didn't get to fly with the MD 10 3/4 x 7 3/4-7. Will do that the next time.

My next step is to put my carb back on the engine to see if everything stays the same. I want to again thank Jim Oliver for loaning me his carb for testing. Jim, I plan to hold on to your carb until after I fly with my carb.

If my carb performs correctly I then plan to start shortening the pipe length to see what happens to the engine rpm and if it starts leaning out on verticals.

Sorry for such a long post but I wanted to get everybody caught up on the process of getting my OPS Redhead to running correctly. I believe I'm getting there.

Ralph,
Thanks for the update. Bob is about finished with my Redhead. When I get it back I will run it with the carb you have and see what we get.

Ralph,

Per our PM's here's the pic of the Saturn that I have waiting to be finsihed. This is the condition I received it , I haven't touched it, yet. I don't know how much extra effort it would take to make a mold of it with the engine and nose gear cut outs that are already in the fuse. What you see in the pics is all that I received. The FG wingtips are very firmly attached and I doubt they could be removed without ruining something. BTW - nice mold work Ralph!!

Here's some more pics. The paper plan is the only paperwork I received the kit. Was there any thing else included?

Jetmech43, The photo's are from the Classic Pattern contest held in St Charles, IL. It is an awesome flying site. It's the Fox Valley Flying Field just west of St Charles, IL. They keep the field in perfect condition. It has an 800 foot runway with grass on one side. Has an enclosed shelter that contains several charging stations. Play ground equipment for the kids and plenty of bleachers for spectators. Rusty Dose runs the contest. It's in May but I'm not sure of the date right now.

Rick, The pictures look good. Who ever was building the Saturn was obviously a very good builder. I am sure your fuselage can be used by Don (Frequent Flyer) to make a mold off of. I'll contact Don when I have a little more time.

Talk to you later,
Ralph

No problem Ralph, I won't be building this anytime soon. Got too many other projects in front of this first. Just let me know if the fuse is needed.

Jim,

I mailed your OPS carb back today. Thank you very much for loaning me the carb. It helped a great deal in finding the problem with my OPS. The OPS is running very well now. I plan to start shortening the pipe to get at the correct length for the best power. I can now start practicing the pattern rather than try to get the engine running correctly.

BTY I ordered one of the new NovaRossi .61 engines a couple weeks ago. My son plans to put in a Fliteglas Trion he just picked up. It should be a rocket.

Fireball glow plugs are still available. Google Swanson Fireball. I just got a few cards a couple of months ago.

Hey Ralphie Baby-since I loaned you my "valuable" carb, how about loaning me that new NovaRossi???
At least give us a report of props and numbers when you run it.

A bit more seriously, I'm glad the carb helped get you going. We gotta stick together on this stuff!

Hi Ralph,
I just noticed the date on the drawings for your Saturn, was April 1975. That makes it a legal Airplane for SPA.

Thanks turbo, I'll probably order a few fireball glow plugs. I assumed they were no longer available. Glad to hear they still are around.
