Ok this has been kicking around in my head for a while and it's been inspired by reading a coulpe of fuel threads by another Aussie.

I have an old OS 20 and plan to run some tests over the next mont or 2 on some of this.

firsts we have methanol based fuels, these run about 20% oil BUT what oil.
there is the basic degumed castor then in no real order
Castrol M castor
shell racing M 70%castor 30% synthetic
Klotz synthetic
Pro-Glow blended syn/cast
Cool power
and probably others, but basicaly the "normal" RC 2 stroke oils we all use

but what then??? does any one know of other oil's for methanol?

then what about peanut oil, olive oil, grape oil? other comercial oils like Castrol A747, what about (i saw this on another thread) say metho, acetone, peanut oil fuel.

any way i plan to sacrifice my OS20 on testing some of these but first i need to find fuels/oils that mix.

any sugestions or hints?

Ok i started without you.

Methanol
i took a selection of oils in my shed and tried mixint them with methanol.
Olive oil, Shell advance gear oil, Shell advance VSX2 2 stroke oil, Castrol activ 2 T s stroke oil.
none of them mixed with methanol.

Petrol
Castrol activ 2T, olive oil, castor oil.
all seemed to mix OK although it was hard to tell as the petrol olive and castor was all the same colour.
i actualy ran these in the engine, they tan OK sort of rich run blubbery sound with the glow clip on, remove the glow clip and the engine sort of spluttered and died, i tried adjusting the needle and it got better but still died with no clip.

Methalated spirits.
castor was the only thing i could get this to mix with but on the engine test i could not get it to fire, no way no how.

just to clarify, after each engine test i ran some of my standard fuel through to make sure everything was still OK.

Hey Woodsy, are you sure you can actually use methylated spirits for rc engines.
Because some of my friends said it doesnt work.

Woodsy...on the fuel side of things it's best to stay with methanol. For one thing it's cheap, not much more than petrol (or gas to the foreigners :) ), and it reacts with the glowplug once the power is removed. Petrol won't react and that's why your engine stopped when you disconnected the battery. Petrol can be used but at the expense of needing a suitable ignition system. Diesel fuel (the ether type, not truck diesel) can be used in a glow engine if the power to the plug is left on long enough for the engine itself to completely heat up.

As for oils, castor is the only vegetable based that will work. All the synthetics were originally designed for other purposes and some just happened to do a reasonable job. Apart from the ones you've listed you could add some of the turbine oils like Mobil Jet Oil 2 (but not the third generation of it) and BP 2380.

olive oil??? i thought everyone knew that it burns at a really low temp-good stuff if you like varnish.

what about linseed oil? isn't it a relative of castor oil?

I don't think cotton is anywhere near related to the castor bean plant. It is thicker than most vegetable oils though.

hi,
i tried this oils:

castrol R30/40, (castor based)
Shell advance racing M, (70%castor/30%synth)
Motul Micro, ( synthetic )
exxon turbine oil, (synthetic with some poisinous stuff in it) and
"no name" castor oil from a chemical supplier.

all oils do what they should,lubricating the engine,but "how good" is only possible to know in the long term.

after making some test flights, i could see the first differences. castor and castor- based oils are messy and i needed more time to clean the model.

synthetic oils are cleaner than castor oils,but a lean run will not be so forgiven than with castor oil.

now i'm using only motul micro (designed for model engines),and this over a year with great results.i'm sure you will find a suitable oil for your needs too.
