Not sure whats facts or fiction, I was getting up dates through out the surgery from someone close to him. Heard he had a heart attack on the table and pasted and was brought back? He was having seezers and went into a coma. He is a strong man who has had a rough time of it in the past. Lets pray and hope he pulls out of this. Del is a very pleasent person who does not deserve this, we have all learned a great deal from him, it would be a great lose to our family of ww-1 modeling.
God Speed Del. We are all praying for you and your loved ones.

For all of Del's many, many friends from around the world, here's what I know so far.

Del's wife Mary called me around noon on Thursday with the stunning news that Del had gone in for surgery (hiatal hernia), but something bad had gone wrong. She was first told that Del had had a heart attack, and that they had worked on him a half hour to bring him back. She was quite frantic, as she hadn't been able to get in to see him yet.

She's called me twice more on Thursday with what she was learning from the hospital in Oxford, OH. First it wasn't a heart attack, but he was having some sort of mini-seizures, that the hospital had worked on him for 20 minutes, but were concerned about brain swelling and how long he'd been without oxygen. Their children were with her, and the family was trying to make arrangements to have Del transported to a larger hospital in the area better equipped to deal with the situation - and she was clearly upset (and angry).

I got word out as best I could to Del's nearest friends down in the Greater Cincinnati area, as well as on the Hoosier Dawn Patrol webring - I hesitated posting anything further until we really knew more on what was happening.

She called me again Friday morning, clearly upset and angry, and told me that she wasn't hopeful at all by this point. Del was still having siezures and was in a coma, and that she was heading back to the hospital (she had left the hospital at 3 in the morning and spent a few hours at her son's house). I asked her to let me know if there was anything she needed us to do for her to let us know, and to call when she knew anything further. I immediately left work here in Wisconsin and headed home, made a few more phone calls with this latest update (such that it was) and hunkered down awaiting the next phone call.

I haven't heard anything since.

It's been 36 hours since I last heard from Mary, and I'm taking the lack of information as simply that, that that there's been no change in status at this time. Apparently something went bad wrong Thursday at the hospital, and I'm personnally not sure Mary was getting the full story herself.

At this time I'm afraid we're simply in a holding pattern - the last few times I've tried calling Mary I've gotten no answer. I'm trying not to read anything into it - except that there is simply nothing new to report.

The instant that I hear anything further I'll be making phone calls and posting updates to everyone. but at this time this is everything I know so far.

Yes Lee, keep us informed. I sent a email to Mary as well and haven't heard from her. But if this kind of thing happened to my wife, I wouldn't feel like answering emails either so it is full understandable.

Hello, everyone

I just got an update from Mary, and I'm afraid it's as bad as it can be.

Del is not going to recover - he went too long without oxygen when whatever went wrong at the hospital occurred.

Mary and the family are with him now, basically waiting for the inevitable.

Please keep them in your thoughts today.

As soon as I hear more, I'll update you.

Just doesn't seem right, last weekend Del was joking around with me saying he was just getting a new check valve installed and wasn't a big deal. I really feel for Del and his family.

When I first found RC Universe Del had just started the 1/3 scale prototype of the DR I. I was signed on but would only read the posts as I was way too much of a greenhorn to scale building to offer any thing that might have been of interest. Each day I'd log on and rush to see what had been done, always in awe of the talents and skills Del posessed and weilded in the construction of the ship. I finally worked up the nerve to post a question once in a while, and Del the consumate gentleman would answer it seriously and with interest at whatever it was I had asked. He made me feel like I might have a place in this fraternity. I never had the pleasure of meeting him or flying with him and I'll have to wait till I move to the other side to do so. We have lost a wonderful modeler, friend, cohort, brother. God speed Del, I'll miss you.

A true gentleman and all around great guy. Del will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

von Delby and Miss Mary at the 2008 Hoosier Dawn Patrol.

Del sent me this photo of he and his Fokker for my web site a few years back. I really enjoyed all the discussions
on the paint scheme for the wing of his DVIII on the forums.

Blue Skies Del....

Delbert Johnson Jr.

JOHNSON Jr., Delbert beloved husband of Mary Johnson. Loving father of Dennis Johnson, Angie (Jon) DeWitt and Patti (John) Winterrod. Grandfather of Rachel DeWitt, Nicholas DeWitt and John Winterrod. Also survived by 6 step-children. Brother of Sheila Spahni and Sandy Johnson. Son of Delbert and Frances Johnson Sr. Passed away on March 4, 2012, age 69. Memorial service will be held Thursday at Chapel at Chesterwood Village 8073 Tylersville Rd. West Chester, OH 45069 at 6 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made at www.airforcemuseum.com/donations.

When I talked to Mary earlier this week, she commented that they didn't want flowers, but instead if I could think of an airplane type donation that would have been more meaningful to Del. Several of us first though of donations to the A.M.A. and that was our initial suggestion. I also thought of the Air Force Museum Foundation yesterday morning - the special events department, and specifically the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous.

I've uploaded some of the many photos of Del I've gathered over the last decade, and will post more later.

I'll have more to post later,

This saddens me greatly. So sorry for Del and his family. Too bad I never got to meet him, but have learned greatly from his threads. Someone is going to have to build a V29 now in his honor.

I would be glad to pick up the V29 that he started and finish it and give it to his family. I look at Dels past posts and when I see that he is "offline" my breath sticks a bit. I wish we could gather at his field and fly a lap for him.
