Here is the RK-049 fan. Not much left to do. I have to file the fan down to fit a bit better, then I need to fit the cylinder fairing into the fan body, take it all apart fuel proof and paint it. Then reassemble it, install the fuel tank spinner and all the little good stuff and then I am ready to run it. Still looking for a neat way to hook up to the glow plug. Any ideas?

KRESS ???

ALL the fan impellors were HORRIBLY CAST out of balance. GO ELECTRIC for a EDF. You WILL hear a true turbine whine with NO problems compared to a fuel DIY setup

Hi Guys,
Belive it or not some progress still going on over here. I am probably 80% done with both engines. Just to recap this started by me designing and building my own version of the TD 090 ducted fan. On my quest I found and purchsed an old RK-049 kit and I decided to build both. I also built the tail pipe and need to make an inlet still. Once that is all done I'll make a test bench to run them on. If I can get any appreciable thrust out of one or the other, I may just continue on with the airplane build. Here are some pictures. The RK-049 has been painted and I am just waiting on some fuel tubing that I purchased from Tower to show up to complete the RK-049 assembly. I drilled the stator holes on my version I've been calling the RPK-09 and before I fuel proof it I think I am going to build some flow straighteners next. Please give me your comments! ;-)

Okay Gang,
I guess since Sandy is around I'll get some more work done on this. The RK-049 is just about complete. I have to mount the spinner, sand some off the OD of the fan (it rubs on the shroud) and extend the needle valve. Any thoughts on extending the NV? No clue how I am going to manage this one. Here are some pics. My .090 fan is coming along too. I need to install flow straighteners and paint and final assembly. Maybe I'll get these running soon...

Hey Rick,

Great to see you making some progress! If you are using one of the custom NV's (128 tpi), I believe they are brass, you could just solder a brass tube extension on.

WOW ohhh WOW.

I built one of these so long ago it feel like a different life.

I built the RK unit, ran a modified TeeDee 051 on 40% Best I was able to do was about 17 ounces of thrust. That was using a fishing scale to test the thrust of the unit. I never did get it all together. Plane with DF unit ready to go was 26 ounces. Never did try to launch it. It just did not feel like much power. Now with modern micro gear, you should be able to get the plane down around 16 to 20 ounces and that should be plenty of power.

Hi John,
Yes I am using the 128tpi NV. I did think about using a tube soldered on. I'll check on it.

Buzz,
Yes, my plan is use to my own .090 version of the RK-049 fan and hopefully generate some appreciable thrust. I'll report here when I get to testing. if I can get 17 oz of thrust or more, then that should be a green light to proceed with building an airframe. Otherwise I'll shelf the project! Thanks for checking in guys!

I worked hard to get that thrust out of the tiny little 0.051. We shaved this, ported that, lightened the fan hub, shimmed this, tweaked that and so on. I remember I added 1/32 in balsa sheet to the fan blade to change the airfoil. Sanded, sealed and smoothed out. It was a fun project. If I still had the fan unit I would try again.

I am interested in hearing how much thrust you can get out of the 0.09?

Hi Guys,
Okay I got the RK-049 finished. I just need to solder on the NV extension. I've added flow straighteners to my 090 fan and just have a bit more final sanding to do. Then I have to paint it and final reassembly. I've also purchased a linear slide and fish scale so I can set up a test bench to measure thrust. I have the Tail pipe finished, but still need to make an inlet so I can test the entire power assembly as a unit. I'll make the inlet from balsa, cut and sand. Now that I have gotten this far I need to figure out how to get these little buggers running. I have not fooled with a 1/2a engines since grade school. I think I'll start a seperate thread for those details and see if I can get some more general responses.
Much Thanks Gang - I'll keep you posted.
Rick

Hi Gang,
A quick update. I made the inlet peice. I carved it from a balsa block. This is what the power tube assembly looks like. I didn't do a great job drilling holes in the body for the engine mount so I filled them in and going to redo it. The cylinder head was off center from the access hole by a bit. I should have everything I need to break in the motors this weekend, so maybe I'll give that a go.

I'm sure there are others like myself who have watched this project silently. I admire your efforts and determination to see it through despite the availability of modern, reliable alternatives. To quote Captain America(Peter Fonda) from the movie Easy Rider, you're "Doing your own thing in your own time".

Personally, I'd love to see one of those things fly. It would be an instant hit with the crowd at the SMALL fly-in.

Hi Tee Bee,
Well I assumed that there are people watching. I know this thread must be like watching grass grow, but we will get somewhere. I'm going to proceed until I can measure how much thrust I can develop with the "power tube" i created. If I can't get enough I'm going to stop right there and put it on the shelf. Elsewise I'll put an airframe around it. Either way - I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for watching :-)

Hi Guys,
I made alot of progress this weekend. These are some older shots. I remounted the center body in my own design 709 fan, you can see the cylinder head is squarly located in the access hatch now! In the side shots you can see where I filled the holes and had to redrill them off that location some. I didn't make any kind of jig for that and motor wasn't mounted when I originally drilled the holes. Also you can see the inet fairing is finished. I think I have it sealed in this picture. Also you can see the fish scale I bough and some linar track I am going to use to set up the test bench. I am about halfway through breaking in the Tee Dee 090, quite a tedious process and so glad I decided to to that seperatly on the bench, All I have left to do for my motor is finsih paint it tonight. I sealed the wood and fuel proofed it, all this one needs is a NV extension as well now. Maybe next weekend I'll run the final motor assembly, we will see. One thing for sure, the 090 is sure a screamer...

The final touches this weekend was to make a tail cone fairing and some streamlining for the center body. A picure of the 090 on the test bench too. so far about 1/2 through run in.

Okay Gang,
Here are all the finished fan parts. It appears my 090 is just about broken in. All I have to to is clean up the motor and reassemble this fan. Guess I am ready to give it a go. Going to run the motor a bit more tomorrow so maybe we will have a running fan this weekend.

Well I got my .090 all broken in and running strong. Now I can go ahead with the final assembly of the 709 fan.

Also, Guys at my club told me that I need to build the airplane regardless. It's silly to have come all this way and not finish. Even if all I do is hang it on the wall. So I guess it's off I go. While I was waiting for fuel to come in I built the wing. No pictures but I'll updat that soon. One thing is for sure these little planes sure build up fast. I just need to some sanding on the wing and add the center sheeting.

Okay Guys,
Another quick update. I got the engine all assembled. Boy that was harder than I thought. It took three nights of fitting - sanding - shimming to get everything to fit well and fan to turn true. With that said the one thing I am not happy about is the black spinner cone. I did my best to get it as concentric as possible but I can tell without even running it the spinner is not true to the fan. Not sure what I can do about that. Going to visit my machine shop friend and see if he can help. I am not sure how the heck you would even hold the spinner to turn it but maybe he has some ideas. You can see my progress on the wing in the background. Please check it out and have at it! Let me know what you think!

Well, I solved the spinner problem. However I took the throw money approach at it. I just called up tru-turn spinners. I ordered a 1 1/2" spinner without the cutouts and had to have a special adapter made for it. Now I guess I should take the time and try to balance the fan. I have in mind to purchase a du-bro balancer, just another 25 bucks - unless I can come up with a cheaper alternative.

Rick, smart smove with regards to your spinner...!
As far as your wing goes...you are asking "Mr SWR" for his opinion...?
You have done a beautiful job with the original wing, but it won't allow maximum unloading like a 1/4" thick solid balsa wing will.
Old 1/2A RC plans used old mentality that you needed a "built up" wing no matter what the application.
Regardless, run it the way you've built it because it will fly if the power is there. Once you've seen it fly, then you will get the chance to mull over any advice like this for a MKII type mod if you are good and ready to try something different.

Hi Guys,
Well I got the spinner and it looks beautiful. However the adapter is a large chunk of steel. I am going to need to get it lightend up a bit. The ID of the spinner is just a tad too small for the step on the fan. The OD is a perfect match. So I brought it back to my machinist friend and he is going to machine a step on the front of the fan concentric with the axis. Free favors are time consuming though. So this may take another week or so. But once I have it back I really think I am finally ready to run it LOL. I did do some more work to the fan. I shimmed the front stator support to get the fan closer to the ID of the body. Quite a bit of work but I had the time waiting for the spinner to come.

I also cut out the fuse sides and doublers and expoxied them together.

Combatpigg, a MKII version? I like the way the think! We will talk more about the solid wing after we see how this works and if we have something here.

Thanks for the support guys.

Hi Guys,
Did I mention how much I hate "free" Favors!!! Still waiting for the spinner and fan to come back from my buddie who is machining a concentric groove in the fan for the spinner to fit in. I have actually reached a part in this project where I can go no further for the moment. Attached you can see the test bed set up. I have the white inlet section rubberbanded to the engine cradle, and the tail pipe is inserted on the engine and I added a scrap of ply on the cradle to retain it. The cradle is mounted to a slide which is mounted to the 2x2 plywood sheet. You can just make out the fish scale under the tail pipe.

Just wating for the spinner and fan to come back and then I can run some tests on the fan and see what type of thrust I can get - tweek it and what not. Praying I can get an appreciable amount of thrust.

The wing is largely done, just need some fine sanding. I really need to assemble the fuse, but I need that tail pipe section to continue (fuse sides and dublers have been cut out and joined). Once I encorporate the tail pipe section in the fuse, I will no longer be able to test it with the set up I have.

So still standing by, I'll update you guys with the results of the run as soon as I can!

Guys,
Belive it or not, I got the spinner back. Fits like a glove! Took forever, but a free favor is just that!!! So my test bed is complete. I can now run my fan and see what we get. Maybe this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

BTW, I see this thread is over a year old now. A big thanks to all the followers out there. Hope I have given you something worthwhile to read.
