Picked up a E-Maxx, newest model with the upgraded tranny so it is ready for brushless.  I've decided on the hobbyking 150a esc, but not sure what to get for the motor and lipos.  I'd like something I can run for a while without overheating, this will be mostly bashing with the ocassional top speed run.  What do I need as far as motor mounts and battery hold-downs for the upgrades ?  I'd appreciate some links and I'd prefer to buy everything from hobbyking if possible.

Thanks,

Tim

The Hobby king website should tell you what amp ratings to pair with that esc. I'd say it probably needs 2-2s or 3s batteries with a 25c or higher and 5000 mah minimum.
For motor mount you should be able to check if the distance between the motor bolt holes are the same as a mamba monster.

On a 150a ESC, the lowest c rating you should consider is 30c for a 5000 mAh battery.  A 30c 5000 mAh battery will provide 150 amps.  You would be better off getting a 40c battery as a minimum, since that will provide up to 200 amps.  That will give you more "headspace" to keep your battery and your ESC happy.

There are a few benefits to running a battery with "better than minimum" ratings.  For the esc, less problems/risks of voltage ripples from a weak/underpowered battery.  For the battery, running a 40c will give the battery a longer life.

To figure out if your battery will be big enough to support the esc, use this "rule of thumb"

(mAh x C rating) divided by 1000 = amps

2s 5000 mAh x 30c = 150,000/1,000=150 amps

5000 mAh x 40c= 200,000/1,000=200 amps

Broke my shock tower this weekend, so made up a list of things to upgrade while I was replacing this.... this is what I ending up ordering..

RPM Shock Towers, front and rear
RPM A-Arms for front
RPM True-Track A-Arms for rear
RPM Axle Carriers for Front
RPM Front and Rear Bumper

I should be pretty beefed up now, I'll do some more additions down the road or as I break things, what should be next on the list ?

While there, I may go ahead and do the power up for the MMM at 250.00   I may go the EZRun routhe, haven't quite decided yet.

I also bought the traxxas big bore shocks for it, not sure if I'm going to install these or not, may go with powerstrokes

Not much to see here, but these are the RPM ugrades and big bore shocks.  I'll probably go with ProLine once these break, but good for now.  Will be ordering some brushless kind of motor/esc in a couple weeks and I should be set for a while.

I sold my jato so now I can get pretty much any brushless combo I want   .....I'm between these 3, what would you choose and why, price not withstanding.

HobbyWing M5-A combo, 150a
Mamba Monster Max
Tekin RX8

I'd like sensored, but not a requirement

esc isnt the limiting factor on batteries, it comes down to how much amps your motor is going to draw at the desired rpm range you plan to run it at. doesnt hurt to overkill tho.

what voltage do you plan to run?

He's looking at a brushless 'combo'. When you buy a brushless combo you base your battery selection on the amperage rating of that combo. Obviously the motor is what draws the power from the esc, a monkey would know that.

You hit the nail on the head

The reason I put 150a after that ESC is some people might not know the amp rating of that combo, where just about everyone knows the MMM and Tekin ratings

If those three are your choices, I would choose the Tekin RX8 combo running away.

You can get a sensored motor combo if you want (but if you are just making this a fast basher, I wouldn't worry about the sensored motor, imo)

The Tekin ESC is much more programmable, it is made to tighter specs than the HW 150a, and it is a very solid ESC and motor combination.

Plus, they were on sale at Stormer Hobbies for around $280 right before Christmas.  If that is still holding, I would go that route if your budget allows.

That's a great price, will definitely be my choice, what kv rating should I go with, this will basically be a backyard basher and ocassionally taking it to the local track,.

on to the next and hopefully last question...... I want to run 4s on this, which batteries should I get that will fit in the tray, preferably 5000mah + .  I can purchase extended hold downs if necessary.

You might want to check the Traxxas forums, I am sure someone has the battery tray specs there.

If they are close to the ERBE, then SPC, Gens Ace, and Turnigy all make batteries that fit with no problems.

I really like the SPC 8200 mAh 2s batteries.  Plenty of power for a backyard basher, and the perfect amount of run time.  I get 35-45 minutes of hard bashing times out of them.

Ordered some battery expansion bars from the LHS and picked up some 5200 mah 2s lipos from hobbyking.  Forgot I had the same battery in the closet so I was able to test fit.  Height was tall, but the stock 25mm hold downs worked, although bent.  The 28mm should fit the bill perfectly.

Got the RX8 combo installed along with 2 2s 5200 lipos, gearing is stock 68/19 and this thing is just nuts.  Uncontrollable if you don't set the punch setting up right, not to mention the braking is crazy.... too much and front flips.  If anyone has some basic bashing settings they use with this combo I'd love to hear it.
