Jb22. The one thing about the TF kits is the wing sheeting is indeed 1/16 and quite fragile. Having built the F4U, 2 P-51s and 2 At-6s I know what you mean about the thin sheeting. I would highly recommend you glass your bird with .75 oz cloth and resin. It will give you good surface to finish and add some strength to the wing skins. There are a number of articles about glassing so I won't take up time to discuss it here. Just be sure to take off as much of the weight as you can by thinning the resin and sanding the filler coats before getting to the finish colors. I good finish shouldn't add much more than 16 total oz. to your bird. Good luck, looking good so far.

scratchbuilder46,
I was in my work shop today and almost put my finger through the right wing just trying to move it all the work table!! I am going to glass the whole kit, but I will keep the tail light!! I have a club member who love to glass!! I will get him to help me!!
Thank you so very much for your input!! I have found a build thread here on RCU about the TF Spitfire and he post pictures of how he glass his wings and they turn out great!!!
Thanks, again!!!

Count me in - I have a H9 Spit with OS-95AX. Just repairing the LG right now after I ripped it out on a deadstick. I hope to get her back into the air soon.

Andreas,
The look on the pilot face after he climb out of the cockpit said it all!!! He try hard to down play it, but, the smile came out!! The low fly-by was a joy to see and hear!! I was told and I agree, that the best way to see these war bird is in the air. Sitting on the ground is okay, that way I can get a close look and take lots of pictures, but, to see them fire-up and then taxi for take-off and go to work!! Hoping that they all will come home!!
Anybody remember growing up and watching the tv show "12:00 O Clock High??? Now I am telling my age!!!!

Sonny, thanks for the video. Yes i remember 12 o'clock high. Watching the video makes me want to start on my Top Flite MK9 kit. The only thing is i have two other projects i'm working on at this time. And i need to finish them first.
that's the way it is. John T.

Oh yea, 12 O-Clock high was one of my favorite TV shows as a kid . That along with World at War, other shows like BA BA Black Sheep, Combat (Rat Patrol), and even Hogan’s Heroes started my interest in WWII. I was always peering out of the windscreen of my dad’s Cherokee looking for that inbound bogie. I think I built every WWII plastic model Revell and Monogram airplane ever produced.

I have heard from those that were alive in the day about how the invasion strips were really painted on, and we have all seen the perfect outline of the invasion stripes on models, but this says it all.

LOL, well you know the French; baguette, wine and café au lait... but there was an underground French resistance during the war. Many thanks to those brave people!

Welcome Capstan. Love your 'user' name. Most appropriate for a lover of Spitfires.

Dubs1946, I am sure the French were keen to do their bit but were just overwhelmed by vastly superior forces. It would have been all over before they knew it.

Welcome new bro's

Brad

Yes i agree with the general idea the underground fought well and died bravely, but the capitulation of the French was a debacle and should not have happened and could have been avoided and the Germans stopped in there tracks.
Makes interesting reading.

Brothers;
One quick question please!!
As you all know I am going to glass the fuse and wings on my Top Flite Spitfire kit. I can not find any .75 oz cloth but I can get my hands on 1 to 5 oz cloth. My question is, would 1 or 5 oz glass add to much weight?? I have use 5 oz before on the center section of the wing, but not the whole wing.
Thanks for any answer or input on this question. Now back to the work shop for more sanding!!!
Thanks, again Brothers!!

Sonny,

I buy my glass from Ziroli. If my memory serves me well it is 1/4 oz cloth, and you can buy it by the yard.

There are different thoughts on glassing. Either is fine for me, but here is the content of the discussions I have had with others.

Discussion 1:

1. When using epoxy resin for glassing thin it with Acetone to thin it out to flow into the cloth.
2. Use a squeegee, credit card, or business card to spread. (Some dab it on with a sponge)
3. Apply second coat of epoxy after cured.
4. Sand, fill, prime, sand, and sand some more, then repeat till smooth.

Discussion 2:

1. Same as above, except do not thin. The thought is thinning requires the second coat, so no thinning results in a lighter glass job.
2. Same as above.
3. Skip to step 4 above.

I have always gone with Discussion 1, but that is only my choice.

With the amount of skilled builders in the brotherhood, I am sure there are more and better ways to accomplish this task.

Hope this helps someone,

Steve
