Roger,
When I got to the part of the build for the stab, I look at the plans and the manual and something was not right so I did a search here on RCU and found the two build thread and the talk about the horizontal stab. The look on the plans just did not look right to me. I did at first set the stab as per the plans but it did not sit right. So I look at the manual and move the stab like in the picture and did a search on RCU and found the 2 build thread. Roger I don't think anyone will be bad about the info you post on the Top Flite build. This is what these forum are all about. Helping people out!!

Brothers;
For the brothers who are building the TF Spitfire kit. If you are going with the bell-crank system on the flaps, make sure you make a door or some way you can get to them is you need too. Once you sheet the wings, you do not have a way to get to them without cutting the sheeting over them!! As me how I know!!!

#1;
Start glassing the wings and fuse next week!!!

Update from December 27, 2012 visit on my 1/7 TF Spitfire by RPRCBuilder:

I am heading there today to start fitting the cowl and gear

Sonny, how is your's coming?

WARBIRDRCER, don't shoot the messenger. Its difficult to tell from your photos, but I believe your horizontal stab is not seated in the correct position. Its to late to correct it now, if it is indeed seated incorrectly, but this info may help others who are currently building the TF Spitfire and have not yet seated the horizontal stab. I contacted TF with the stab seating issue when I was building my TF Spitfire, they confirmed that my observation of the horizontal stab seating was indeed correct. See below for details for horizontal stab seating. The information was posted at the time on the other two TF Spitfire builds in RC Universe.

Topflite R&D has confirmed that my observation is correct in finding that the drawing plan shows the incorrect seating of the horizontal stab in the stab saddle. TF is as dumb founded as me as to why this mistake in the drawing was not brought to their attention way before now?

For all builders that seated the stab with the leading edge of the stab butting up against fuselage frame # 10. The stab is seated in the wrong location in the stab saddle and more stab incidence has been induced then the required + 2 degrees. This may be a contributing factor in the reported nose overs during the take off run. It may also explain why more elevator up trim was needed to fly level then what was expected.

Topflite will be releasing a Technical notice to address the problem.

The photo at step # 10, page 36 of the manual shows the correct seating of the stab in the saddle. To correctly seat the stab in the saddle the leading edge of the stab must rest on the small lower step of the saddle, not the upper step. When seated correctly in the saddle the leading edge of the stab is 1/4' back from fuse frame # 10.

If you are currently building the Spitfire there are 3 items in the manual that need to be corrected:

(1). Page 35, step 2, it states that the fuselage sheeting should be long enough to extend past the plywood stab saddles by 5/8''. This has to be changed to 7/8''.

(2). Page 36, step 1, the die-cut 1/4'' balsa ''Fin Spacer'' must be increased in thickness to 1/2''. You can make another fin spacer from scrap 1/4 balsa and glue both together to make the fin spacer 1/2'' in thickness.

(3). The horizontal stab must be seated correctly in the saddle. The leading edge must rest on the lower step of the saddle. When it is seated correctly, the leading edge of the stab will be 1/4'' distance from fuselage frame # 10. See page 36, photo at step # 10 shows seating and 1/4'' spacing.

Roger

Thanks ForcesR,

As Sonny stated, we encourage all input for the Spitfire builds on this thread.

I will ask RPRCBuilder if he addressed this issue. He did have to fabricate a spacer to fill a gap between the horizontal stab and fuselage. I stopped by one day while he was fabing it, and he did comment there was an issue that caused this additional part, but I never asked what it was.

If the problem was not corrected, I wonder if the wing saddle could be modified to adjust/offset the incidence between it and the stab. This should correct the trim issue and would be unnoticeable for the most part once faired in.

Latest 1/7 TF Spitfire build update (01-04-2013).

RPRCBuilder and I spent the day working on the plane; only interrupted by a trip to Home Depot and stopping for a bite of lunch. I must say spending time with an RC friend in conjunction with the events of a day like today defines what this great hobby/sport is all about.

As you can see the cowl is fitted and ready for me to final trim, glass, and fill with aerodynamic filler (Bondo ) prior to refitting.

The flap operational checks went great, and the landing gear was fitted and the strut lengths were established. RPRC glued up the top sheeting, and worked on some additional items.

What a great day!!

RPRCBuilder is doing a great job on the build!! One quick question, did he stay with the bell-crank system on the flaps or go with a two servo setup?? I had to open up the sheeting in the right wing over the right wing bell-crank, because it was hook up backward!! Now I have a nice little door there is I need to change something!!!

RPRC said we could put panels there, and I agree with you they are needed. I had a couple of planes over the years I to had to cut into for repair reasons.

Hi guys. Just a couple of things. My Spitfire is an H9 with an OS91fs. I put HK retracts in it from the go. They work beautifully and have held up great. I use a separate small battery, receiver, and switch for them. The stuff is tucked in where the servo for the mechanicals normally would be. The small switch is in the side of the plane under the flight pack switch. I used Robart struts initially but the doors were a problem. I ditched the struts in favor of the 5mm struts that come with the TF Mustang and P-47. The HKs take 5mm wire so it's a perfect fit. I then used the stock doors and wow, they look pretty good. The HK electrics handled the weight of the Robart struts with no problem, in case you were worried.

AND, today, in 74 degrees, I flat sprayed the plane. What was shiny Ultrakote now looks great. I streaked it with flat black and a bit of silver. I'll add guns soon. Pictures when it dries. Whoa... I love this hobby, especially when it all works out!

 Hi Tony,

that sounds really good.  You have the same Spitfire as I do.  I am using a Saito FA100 in mine.  Glad to see that you have some nice weather for the painting of the Ultrakote.
What are you using for your flat spray?
I have tried different clear flat/matt sprays that are available here in Canada on an old film covered wing.
I could not find anything in cans that I am happy with or think that it would stand up to 15% nitro.
So I will be going the 2 part Urethane route.  I went to the local automotive store and got
the SEM HRC40 matt clear 2k kit.
I won't be able to spray the plane until my pilot is in so that I can seal the canopy.  I'll have to talk to my
boss at work to see if I can have use of the spray booth and guns as well.
I am sure that it'll be a go.  He is usually really helpfull in that matter.
I guess one hand washes the other.  I'll work some extra time in lieu.

Will post some progress pictures at that time.

Andreas
Happy building and flying.

P.S.
Warbirdrcer and Major Tomski,
I hope you know that I am very envious of you guys being able to
fly right now and I have to sit and wait another 3 months.

facia,

It will be 48 degrees tomorrow as the high, but it seems warm compaired to the last few days, but not as cold as Canada.

First tries of getting my Rotol Logo onto
the prop.
Clear water decal did not work on dark back ground.  The color is just not strong enough.
I tried the white water decal paper and the color comes through way better.
Next step is to print in a higher resolution.
I am learning as I go.  Here are a couple of picks from what it looks like so far.
I am not quite happy with it yet and will make adjustments soon.

Andreas
Happy building and flying.

Hi Andreas. Sorry to not answer sooner. Flu bug has me slowed down, but not out. Maybe it's just a cold but it's no fun. We don't' get colds in Florida (usually)!

I dusted two coats of Top Flite LustreKote Flat, #TOPR7500 on my Spitifire. I heated the can for about 15 minutes in a pan of hot water. Shook the heck out of it, and sprayed it outside in the sunshine. It was about 80F when I did it. The covering on the plane was also warm. I laid the plane out there on some cardboard while the can was heating up. It sprayed beautifully and dried fast. Some dust and a couple of tiny flies brushed off after it dried. I haven't taken any pictures yet of the finished plane. I don't feel up to it right now but promise I will. I put invasion stripes on mine, copying the full size in the pictures. The article how I did it is on www.modelairplanenews.com Search "Tony Iannucelli" or "Spitfire". I roughed up the covering with #400 wet/dry, some silver streaks, and some black streaks. Plan to ad red gun covers, and maybe a bomb. Some of these pictures show what I'm looking to do. The plane flies just wonderfully and it's worthy of all the effort. I didn't lay the paint on. Light flies better. I also started a TF Corsair and just dropped in some Hobby King rotating retracts. They work great! More later. Tony

 Hi Tony,
your Spitfire looks real good and I like the invasion stripes.
Thanks for letting me know on the clear coat.  I was kind of thinking that you used LustreKote.  It seems to be the
choice of many in the USA.  Only problem for me is........ I can't get it up here.
Some sort of DOT regulations that prohibit it being brought in.
I have not found anything else even close here.
Strange is, that we used to be able to get it and some LHS's have other topflite spray cans, but
all old stock and no flat clear.
US online stores say right away: 'No shipping to Canada"
Well, this is the first time for me getting into an ARF build this far. All my other planes are either RTF's or
ARF's that I left as they are out of the box.
2012 was my first flying season (all but 4 months worth) since I left the hobby in 1992.
Hangar 9 sure started the fire in me again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D859nPbEuxw
The Spitfire has my full attention.  I want to make it my own and do as much as I can with it.

Looking forward to some more pics of your Spitfire.

Get well soon.

Andreas
Happy building and flying.

Facia; its not DOT regulations that is preventing the importing of Lustrekote paints into Canada. It's a political issue, the Lustrekote cans do not have bilingual (French/English) languages printed on the labeling.
