Hi Chad

the replica is a sweet bird. is there something about the shape of the rudder? It just looks kinda off. like a cross between a wide chord and the more point tip rudder.

Glazer808,
That is a spit doing a bad, landing and bouncing it! Flaps are only used for landings, not on take off in the spits.
It was just spliced into the takeoff sequence in the film. Just another poor editing job by the film crew.

Notice in the EM brakes demo; they only show tricycle landing gear models. Taildraggers generally will flip as many stated already.
I have brakes on a big F-15 and take-off hold was way cool. I will do brakes on my Ziroli B-25 but not any taildraggers. The Em brakes also look like designed for lighter/ smaller models.

I have a Pica 88" Spitfire. This was built from a forest-in-a-box. I am using an OS BGX for power, and an Airtronics SD10G to control the beast. Here is a video of her maiden flight.
Enjoy.

Spitfires like Mustangs will nose over if given the chance. The wheels are pretty close to the leading edge by design. If you take a look a most fighters from that period several have the same issues.
Spit flaps are only for drag period. They are either up or down with no in between. The Seafire required some Lift from the flaps so they fashioned wooden wedges and shoved them under the flap TE creating maybe 15Degrees of flap. After take off the pilot would jetison the wedges by activating the flaps for a second or two..interesting.

Hi BobH,

I think the wooden blocks you are referring to were only used by Mk V Spitfires launching from RN carriers en route to Malta in 1942. They also had to replace their old de Haviland air screws that limited them to 2,650 rpm or they wouldn't get off the deck. USS Wasp was also used to deliver Spitfires to Malta but with her longer flight deck they didn't need the wooden blocks wedged in the flaps. They also saved weight buy flying off unarmed. The ammo bays were stuffed with cigarettes for the beleagured island's smokers.

It is interesting to note that on one of these convoys a Spitfire launched from the deck (HMS Eagle I think) of a carrier started experiencing fuel problems - not uncommon with long-range drop tanks - It returned and sucessfully carried out the first deck landing of a Spitfire without an arrestor hook.

Regards,
Brendan (Hooton Park)

Ok here's a IMAX film, in HQ and it has one Spitfire on display in the middle of the movie. So it qualifies for this thread.

I maiden my H9 spit last year, so I guess I should join the brotherhood. Mine is electric with the following setup:
Aeolian 5065-380, 8s5k20c batt, CC ice 100 ESC, turning a 15x10

To avoid nose over, I use short field landing techniques. Once the wheels are down and still rolling tail high, kill the power then the flaps. When you kill the flaps the tail will come down hard.

I tried my hand at airbrushing acrylic paint (Tamiya)
a couple of days ago.
At first it looked really good to me in the half lit basement.
Had another look at it yesterday evening and could not stand it.
Way too much paint for the streaking and took it all off again.
As the old saying goes:"If at first you don't succeed, try and try again!"

I found Mehyl Hydrate (Gas Line Antifreze) to work a charm and is cheap too.
It takes the paint off of the monokote like it's water.  Just have to
clean it up with Glass cleaner (i.e. Windex) to get the remaining paint film off
as the methyl hydrade evaporates rather quickly and leaves a film behind.  I took some
pictures powder streaks so you can see what I am talking about.
It looked awful.
I will have to remember:  Less is more!

Andreas
Happy building and flying.

Here is a thought. I know this brotherhood is world wide now. But, sometime in the later part of August, our club hosts a fairly large warbird event. You can check us out at http://www.coffeeairfoilers.com/

If you go to our site, you can see the set up of our field. We have a nice paved runway, but, we also have a huge, well kept grass runway that is almost identical to the grass runways of Britain. Would make a great site for any of the brotherhood to meet and show what Spitfires can really do

Lodging is not an issue. Within 15 mile radious, there are at least 2000 rooms. (This is the area of the great Bonaroo music festival, Jack Daniels BBQ contest and the Tennessee walking horse celebration every year). Also at the local airport, there is the Beechcraft Heritage Museum http://www.beechcraftheritagemuseum.org/

So lots of stuff to do other than fly spitfires

Just contact me for info and I will relay it on as it comes.

WBG

Andreas, I see planes with the smoke trails from the guns all the time and have to chuckle. The gun powder used was cordite were they took charcoal and let it absorb Nito Glycerin. It was a big advancement because this powder was less sensitive to sudden applications of G force. Though it was still corrosive to metal. And the ash from the charcoal looks just like the ash in your barbeque grill. How much do you think that stuff will stain or coat your wing skin.

The primers used iodine and mercury thus most likely to stain:
Here is a video of mercury on aluminum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7Ilxsu-JlY
please note its not black!
The other reactive used in the primers was iodine, this would die paint red.

But most of all the primer caustic materials would eat the barrel up really fast if not cleaned after every use. So if I were cleaning the barrel I would first clean the area im going to be touching first to keep my hands and cloths clean as possible so the max amount of staining the skin of the plane would see is from firing all onboard ammo each flight, I think that is 400rds per gun. That’s less than an oz of mercury and iodine through the 6 guns total . how much staining do you think that will do?

If I saw a picture of an me109f taken at the end of the war with tons of staining I would believe it because the plane was way past its prime, the crews probably did not give it much attention for its last few years and the Germans never repainted unless you were a dignitary (ace, commander,etc.).

Now lets talk about burnt oil stains after the exhaust. I’m sure you have run across a car that burns oil. Did you notice how it picks up dirt and holds it there, I’m pretty sure a plane that ROG’s out of a grass field will kick up its share of dust and dirt so I would expect that to look the same. But going back to the maintenance crew when they do their checks if they have to lift the hood will wipe the area down first to keep it off themselves.

I’ve been lucky enough to have seen our air forces ground crews in action and would expect the same diligence from all ground crews in WWII because that their dads and mom’s (I think the brits used women on ground crews). Today areas that see high oil shoot levels are painted black, under the wing of C-130 aft of the jet engine is a good example.

In conclusion, a case for no gun and exhaust weathering can be made, so do what you want!

Joe

Hi Paladin,

your examples and logic make sense.  I will rethink my plans and vision of what I want my Spitfire to look like.
I do want a little bit of gun powder and stains on it.  Be visible, yet subtle.
It'll be the lightest of dusting with the airbrush and see how it goes.

Thanks for the info and advise.

Andreas
Happy building and flying.

WBG,
I must say, your club has a beautiful field!!! If I was on the east coast, I would come down just to see your field!! I like your idea for some of the Brothers who live on the east coast or the mid west to meet at your club field and talk shop. Not just to talk about the Spit but to be with the Brotherhood!! It won't be long before we have 200 or more in the Brotherhood!!
Thanks for sharing your club info and don't let that field get away. She is a keeper!!!

Sonny,

It is on USAF property and was established in the '50s. It used to be just a dirt runway then we pushed the scraped off topsoil from years past back onto the dirt surface, we planted grass (which some said would never grow there again lol). Then we added the paved runway and years of hard work on keeping the grass growing and top soil building, we have it to where it is now. We have a great group of members that maintain it well. The only thing around is a golf course and a skeet shooting range. Other than that, its wide open. We allow camping on site (no water or electricity unless you bring a generator). Last several years there have been many that come in RV's and just make a vacation out of it.

You can check out some of the videos and pictures on our website of our many different flying events we have every year.

So open invitation stands for everyone to come and enjoy.

We have trained master chef's (in outdoor gilling) that provide one of the best concession stands in the south. You never know what will be on the menu. From the finest burgers, BBQ or the ocasional road kill :P

Its always a great time to be had. Ill even have my spit ready for it this year lol.

BTW, welcome aboard all you new guys

WBG

Jamie

Hi spitfire brothers.
Does anyone out there have plans or at least good cross section drawings of a low back bubble canopy spit fuselage?
I have a glass Mk9 fuz at 1/6 scale but I would like to model a late build Mk16.

Regards

Aww man. You're really tempting me buddy. I grew up in Sewanee and we're planning a visit late August to do the Muddy Roots festival and hang out with mom up on the Mountain. Wasn't planning on packing a Spitfire as a carry-on but...

Guys, like WBG says, there's a lot of great stuff to do in beautiful Tennessee. I'm real proud to be from there. I'd add hiking Stone Door / Fiery Gizzard / Fall Creek Falls to the list and a visit to the Station Inn to hear some real country talent. You never know who might stop by...
