Finally snapped a few pics of my Hangar 9 Mk II Spitfire.  I did a bit of bashing to it to bring a bit more realism to it and I am pretty happy with the results.  If you are interested in some of the work that I did, I posted a detailed list here.

Status: offline 		Test flew my H-9 Spitfire last week. Zero problems with the aircraft, but the engine finally destroyed itself. Will repolace with an Aerovate 15cc as soon as available. The Spitty sure looked good in the air...............

I'm so enthusiastic about it I would like to see the URL mentioned enough so that new members won't tend to miss it. Could it be included every so often on an occasional post so all real Spitfire enthusiasts will be able to be brought up to speed?

Yes, if it might a burden I would consider it an honor to acomplish such a mission myself.

I found that clicking on the picture on Post #72 on our Brotherhood thread is easier for bringing up the "Spitfire" movie and; I am using it to encourage my Facebook friends to enjoy that historic movie. http://www.facebook.com/richard.porter.167 brings up my finest hour with Spitfires. Some great things are going on "behind the scenes." Spitfires are irresistible! As of 5/10/12 my Facebook account has been badly messed up. I don't know if it can be fixed or not.

Status: offline 		Almost done with my Comp Arf spitfire, I have a roll of Avery vinyl mask showing up tomorrow so that should get me back on cutting the mask for all the markings.
Tested the engine however no start due to a bad insulation in the plug cap causing some arcing. Should get s new cap sometime next week from 3W.
The third picture is after scuffing with steel-wool.

Wing Leader Johnnie Jonson's book is available from Barnes & Noble. Mine arrived yesterday. I have been looking for it ever since I started trading blows with our favorite Japanese Ace on the big Mk II Spitfire thread in the Park Flyers & Backyard Flyers forum. So, it now seems very practical for all bona fide Spit fans to enjoy argueably the very best book ever printed about our priceless piece of beautiful history.

I now have my FB wall set up with Spitfires providing the lion's share of the excitement and am looking forward to bringing in more pilots and modeling fans.

This is what I found:

bringing beer kegs to the men in Normandy After D-Day

In his book, Dancing in the Skies, Tony Jonsson, the only Icelander pilot in the RAF, recalled beer runs while he was flying with 65 Squadron. Every week a pilot was sent back to the UK to fill some cleaned-up drop tanks with beer and return to the squadron. Jonsson hated the beer runs as every man on the squadron would be watching you upon arrival. Anyone who made a rough landing and dropped the tanks would be the most hated man on the squadron for an entire week."

In the lighter moments of World War II, the Spitfire was used in an unorthodox role: bringing beer kegs to the men in Normandy .
During the war, the Heneger and Constable brewery donated free beer to the troops. After D-Day, supplying the invasion troops in Normandy with vital supplies was already a challenge. Obviously, there was no room in the logistics chain for such luxuries as beer or other types of refreshments. Some men, often called "sourcers", were able to get wine or other niceties "from the land" or rather from the locals. RAF Spitfire pilots came up with an even better idea.

The Spitfire Mk IX was an evolved version of the Spitfire, with pylons under the wings for bombs or tanks. It was discovered that the bomb pylons could also be modified to carry beer kegs. According to pictures that can be found, various sizes of kegs were used. Whether the kegs could be jettisoned in case of emergency is unknown. If the Spitfire flew high enough, the cold air at altitude would even refresh the beer, making it ready for consumption upon arrival.
A variation of this was a long range fuel tank modified to carry beer instead of fuel. The modification even received the official designation Mod. XXX. Propaganda services were quick to pick up on this, which probably explains the "official" designation.

As a result, Spitfires equipped with Mod XXX or keg-carrying pylons were often sent back to Great-Britain for "maintenance" or "liaison" duties. They would then return to Normandy with full beer kegs fitted under the wings.

Typically, the British Revenue of Ministry and Excise stepped in, notifying the brewery that they were in violation of the law by exporting beer without paying the relevant taxes. It seems that Mod. XXX was terminated then, but various squadrons found different ways to refurbish their stocks. Most often, this was done with the unofficial approval of higher echelons.

In his book "Typhoon Pilot", Desmond Scott also recalls Typhoon drop tanks filled with beer but regretted that it acquired a metallic taste.
Less imaginative techniques involved stashing bottles wherever space could be found on the aircraft, which included the ammunition boxes, luggage compartment or even in parts of the wing, with varying results. Champagne bottles in particular did not react well to the vibrations they were submitted to during such bootlegging trips.

I have a H9 MK II 60 size w/SAITO 100 & a MAS 14x8 SCIMITAR prop. My first MK II died during a low power take-off after about 23 flights.
I just got the canopy to finish the rebuild of this great flying plane.

I've been thinking of getting the Top Flite kit for quite a while, but I would have to mod it for either manual or electric retracts.

This is something a bit out of left field, but just shows what a great airframe the Spitfire is - mine is a glider!
Well a ridge soaring PSS (Power Scale Soaring) ship to be exact. With the wind steady, flight times can be as long as you like
and, with good lift, a full flight envelope can be achieved.

The model was kit bashed from a Durafly kit with a full repaint.

I remember reading about PSS planes a couple of years ago. Pretty popular in the Mid-West even.
I live 30 minutes from the Malibu Mountains in CA. Several of my flying buddies used to go there once a week in 2007-2009 to fly their gliders of various types, including Combat!!
Two of them used the mock-jet fighters.

I have a 3W85XI red head, 26X10 Menz prop, 1.25" hub extension, modified Bison muffler.
The paint is from KlassKote, great product! I used some Testor Enamel as well in the cockpit details.
I expect the weight to be around 40-42lbs.

Status: offline 		Didn't know about the beer runs but now I think it is a great story to attach to a model, I am on to build my Mike Reeves 1/4 scale as a MK IX beer hauler!
