Status: offline 		I just used the plywood mounting tabs that were already there. Since this is a sport model, I saw no point in trying to hide the screws inside the cowl. I guess i'm just not that much of a masochist. : )

Status: offline 		No, attaching it from the outside as well. I just used the masking tape method of determining the inside hole to transfer the hole location to the cowl as attached pic shows. I have a tool out at the airport called a hole duplicator to do the same type of thing which would have been perfect for this but the tape was almost as easy.

Status: offline 		I use a similar method. Always best not to over-think things. I've found that if I make cowlings as easy as possible to remove, I'm far more likely to inspect things as often as I should.

  • Hi gang!  When i read your tread this morning... i can't resist and buy one from AMR-RC here in Quebec.  I need to know if the hardware setup of the elevator pushrod is included? or is it a modification you made?  I will receive it in two days but i need to know...  I think this plane will be THE plane that i search for a long time for the RCG 26cc i buy last year and didn't find the good plane for... I take the white and blue model

Status: offline 		The elevator linkages on mine are stock. I used two elevator servos, though only one is needed if you use the supplied wire elevator-joiner. You should be fine with your 26cc engine. Mine is almost over-powered with a DLE30. Don't install your batteries until you check the CG, as you may need to move them around a bit to balance the airplane. Let us know how it goes.

I installed one 90Oz servo to operate my elevator. I would recommend a single servo, more than enough with your 26cc. I beleave that will be about the best engine size for a RV8. As I am very happy with my DLE20.

i change my mind and buy a new RCGF 32cc... from AMR-RC  hear in Quebec.  I will fly it this week and i made 3 set up for the engine.  First the 32cc RCGF second 26cc RCG and for the finale Fuji 43cc.  The firewall is ready for the 3 engine all hole drill and trottle set up ready...  I put Hextronique 5010 all around but a digital metal gear on the rudder... i know it's overkill because i take it on my 35% Cap 232... I will let you know how it will fly and possibly post video of it next week.  I will fly the plane on ski.

Status: offline 		Wow...nice info regarding 80" RV-8 . . . , which I also own, but my setup is a bit differently with SAITO FG-36.
I didn't fly it yet as I just completed setup and started with testing on the ground + braking in my new SAITO FG-36.
I have 2 short video clips with testing engine and smoke pump on the ground at Toronto RC club field.

SAITO is much heavier compare with DLE30-35 or O.S.-33 thus I got 6.7kg weight w/o fuel and smoke pump.
The plane is nose heavy with SAITO, but I managed to put batteries and other parts as close as possible to the tail.
Also 2 servos for elevator helping to keep CG on the right place.

Over 5" of snow fell in my area overnight, thus I may wait untill spring with maiden fligh.

I am also looking to replace original SAITO ignition box with new one, which has improved sensor and re-designed ignition box with connector for RPM reader.
Looking forward to see more info on your experience with 80" RV-8.

One more: I have noticed that flaps for this big plane are too small and the angle of attack is limited.
Has anyone try to add more surface to the flaps?

Status: offline 		I built new flaps for mine. They were not larger, but they hinged at the bottom to allow much more deflection. (90 degrees) I wanted flaps for drag, not lift. This airplane is a floater. I set up the 90 degree flaps purely for additional drag, hoping to reduce the floating and increase the sink-rate. It worked a little, but not much. A friend fell in love with the airplane, so I sold it to him. He still has it. I went back to my Great Planes 1/4 scale RV-4 with a DLE30 and never looked back. Your RV-8 will fly fine, just be ready to watch it go right on by on several landing attempts until you get the hang of it.

It is on top of 25 years old dump field.
Due to this fact (untill field leveled again) I am looking for the way to slow down all my 5kg and up planes.
On some I have installed air-brakes on fuselage and they working very well.
On this one I am thinkink to add "sliding" down extra flaps like on any passanger planes if you seen them on landing.
A bit complex, but it should work well.
As you I am going to use flaps for braking speed, but not for extra lifling at slow speed.
Thank you for your comments as I may also consider flaps with bottom hinges in order to get close to 90 degree position.

Pretty opinionated about the flaps for someone who hasn't flown one. I own a real RV-8 and wish I could get as relatively slow as this plane can on final and still be in total control like I can with the model. I can tell you that I think the plane lands ridiculously slowly with relatively low roll out without even going to full flaps. I don't even like full flap landings, I think it's prone to tip stalling with the amount of full flaps I have dialed in. I don't know what my half flap angle is but it's a lot, probaby 45 degrees, and I could land this airplane on any RC field worth calling an RC field. With the slightest head wind I can almost land the plane at walking speed and freak fellow club members out. With a decent head wind I have had it just hang almost motionless over the runway on short final and have had to give it power to get it moving. It is a floater but that equates to very low stress when it does settle down as long as you never stop flying the plane. I forgot the weight of my setup but it's light with a DLE 30. Unlimited vertical takeoffs even with full tank. Fly it before messing with it. It's fine as is, work on your landing skills if you really disagree. I can land it where I want to now that I've got a few flights under my belt.

Status: offline 		I was going to retire my old GP RV-4 and replace it with a new one but they discontinued that model. I was very happy to find this plane on the market for a great price and at 80" makes it even better.
I already have everything I need to put this together just need the airframe.
I have a DLE30 and a RCGF32 but I may just use the DLE since the plane was designed around that engine.

Status: offline 		Here's my GP RV-4 with an XYZ 40 twin from ValleyView. It would work great in the RV-8, too. Same weight as a DLE 30 and has buckets of power. 16-14 APC @ 8000+ rpm.

Status: offline 		Here is my recently completed, but not yet flown RV-8. I used a "new" (been in a box in my garage for 8 years) vintage Brison 2.4, Tech Aero IBEC, Fromeco A123 2300 mah battery and JR DS821 servos all around.

Status: offline 		The prop is a Xoar 20x8 and the balance is not yet set. However, I know it is a little nose heavy... I used 2 elevator servos since I expected it to be nose heavy. In hindsight I should have got the lightened back plate from Tru-Turn... I don't expect I'll need more than an ounce or two of lead in the tail to achieve the CG on the wing tube...

Status: offline 		Finally got to fly mine last Sunday. The Brison 2.4 is well simply awesome. After sitting in a box for 8 years it was a little hard to get primed, but once it started it ran beautifully. It is very smooth even though it is a bit rich...

The RV-8 is quite simply a joy to fly nothing bad to report at this time...

I too didn't have a manual and didn't need one... The CG is on the spar and the controls are set for maximum throw and then I backed them down to 60ish percent, plus expo, for the first flights.
