Status: offline 		I like to kit bash.  I have the ES plans and am building around the larger wing.  It is a fun project but the summer flying season and yard work season is upon us here.
I hope that the flaps offer some slowing down of the plane so that I can land it.

Status: offline 		I agree with the flaps on this airframe, even though Hosteller says thay aren't needed. I know I'll be adding them on mine! How old are your plans? My plans came with both the ES and the IV build.

When I pickup my L-IV I got th fiberglass fuse, foam core wings and horz stab (obiechi wood), but since I have not tacked a foam core like this, I had a full wood kit cut so I can use the built up wing. I have begun to think about using "fliteskin" instead of balsa sheeting and then fiberglassing, the fliteskin looks like it'll do a nice job, plus if I decide to use the foam core it will work on those too.

I am looking to start this build hopefully soon. Need to get a 32x80 hollow core door to build this one ...

Status: offline 		My plans are so old that they are carved in stone....they must be among the first sold.....

I will keep on with the build but it is going to be slow. 

Good luck with your build....why not start a thread on it so that other methods can be seen?

I am using a standard door for the build....it fits.

Maybe an 8 foot by 34 inch door would be easier to find.  Try local hardware stores for damaged doors.....mine was only about 15 dollars and I have had it for 30 years.  I guess they would cost more now.....better get one soon before the government outlaws them.

Status: offline 		Well, after a few hours of looking I found exactly the door I wanted to use! I found it at Stock Supply, its a 32"x80" exterior flush steel slab no drill door for $68.00. I did find one at HD but it was pre hung and in a sash for $116. I would have had to throw away the sash and to that was a big waste. I'll be picking the door up on Wed next week.

I am planning on using it as a large magnetic building board + I can use ceiling tile or other material on the other side should I want to build with pins and such.
This should end up pretty versatile

Status: offline 		Another sleepless night in Jacksonville.

Since it is my first time with fowler flaps I sure was hesitant in cutting away the wing that looked so goodl

Measure and re-measure.......

Cut.......Came out ok; still have some shaping to do.   Flap is just right on one end byt not thick enough on the other....Have to add some sheeting to the bottom to thicken it.

Here is what I did tonight.

Status: offline 		No. Not on plans......I am just going along by instinct. I haven't drawn any plans for the flaps either.....just measure and cut.....
worked on it tonight too. nothing to show for this evening...just cut and shape.  Using spackling to fill the gaps.
It is a fun project.

Status: offline 		It took a lot of thinking but I figured out how to put the flap mechanism into the flap.

It is probably easy for those of you who have done it before.

The following pictures will show my slow progression.

While I was doing this I was rebuilding 2 planes that I re-kitted this past month.

Have to keep them flying.

The rectangular pieces are of 1/8 inch plywood to allow for a good solid hold.

I USED 30 MINUTE EPOXY TO SECURE THE PLYWOOD.

YES, THERE ARE GAPS BECAUSE I DIDN'T CUT THE PLYWOOD PERFECTLY.......THAT'S WHY THEY INVENTED SPACKLING COMPOUND.........'SPECIALLY FOR BUILDERS LIKE ME.

Next I will drill pilot holes for the 4 screws that hold the hinge in place.

The next one should be much quicker to install.

The reason that this thread is going so slow is because I am working on a Hostetler Cessna 150 at the same time as well as doing all the household chores and yard work...getting some flying in too....

Status: offline 		Middle flap hinge completed.........If you go for 3 hinges, make sure that they are all in alignment so binding won't occur.

I've got so many other "large" models that my trailer has run out of room so convincing the wife to let me have another is kind of difficult.. specially since the trailer is full and one of the spare bedrooms has partially completed projects, kits, ARF's and a ton of plans and balsa wood sitting in it. lol
