Status: offline 		The other wing is now under distr.......I mean, construction.
Aileron is attached and flaps ready for epoxying into place.
This  wing is going about 80 percent faster than the other one........with fewer holes to plug up.
Hopefully it will be finished before the new year.........Hey! We are still alive.
It's going to be a great year.......God Bless everyone and have a Merry Christmas........

Status: offline 		Some sort of bug got me the day after Christmas and I was stuck in bed for 3 days.

Today was a new day and I got a little more work done on the wing ... notice how quickly I got servos and control surfaces in now that I know what I am doing.

Status: offline 		Happy New Year................finished sheeting the second wing and am now ready to do some sanding on it and a little spackling and more sanding.
I'm going to attempt to take a pound off of each wing just by sanding.....the sheeting is pretty thick so I'm hoping I can do it.

Status: offline 		Thanks......I was getting tired of working on the wings....The center section of the wings that is a part of the fuselage is next to be addressed.
I'll have to do some thinking on that.....shouldn't be too tough to figure out....the difficult part is done now.

I'll let it cure until tomorrow and sand again taking as much material as I can do safely.

Weather in the upper 70's to low 80's.......that's flying weather.

Not building much with that kind of weather.

Wings are sanded.....one more light sanding will take place before covering them with ??????????.

Preparing to start center of wing section....hopefully this won't take too long.

Planning on flying later today (Sunday).  Yesterday 81 degrees and today 79....Wind out of the east at 5 to 10 mph....This can't last for long........6 nice days in a row.

Status: offline 		While building the wings did you just turn the plans over and oil them or did you get a negative copy made of the wing sheet? I think I and going to get a negative copy made, if I can find a place that can copy this big sheet.

Wish I could go fly, 53 degrees misty and wet field....

I flipped it over and oiled it. I don't remember what oil I used......thinking it was WD40.
If I would have used cooking oil I would have always been hungry and not wanting to build.
Today I dug the plans for the center section out....they are in 3 places......top view, front view and side view,
Maybe some building will be going on tomorrow...not sure yet. Lots of other stuff that needs to be done.
Flying weather is going away in mid week.......down into the mid 50's for daytime highs.

You can just cut the wing section out of the plans and get it copied.........don't need the whole thing.
I cut the plans up when I build; just using what is needed for the specific piece being constructed.

How's it going? I was curious about the flaps so I have gone back ad looked at your flap posts. One thing I noticed is you built the flap in a standalone fashion rather than build the wing with the flap built in it then cut it from the wing and fit it..

I was looking at my plans and was thinking how to build in my flaps and thought about how you did yours. I wonder how a dive flap would work...nah look way out of place.

On the wng, did you build a center section that the outer panels plug into or is it built as a one piece wing? Kinda looks lilke a center section on the plan, yet no defined details.

Status: offline 		I'm in the process of building the center section now......Using the basswood in the boxes gives you the correct dihedral.
I doubled up on the wing joiners in the rear half of the wing.......probably should  have done the same for the front but it's too late now.

as for the flaps. they came as an after thought.........THe wood I used for the flaps was lighter than the wood I had taken off the wing and is stronger.
Fowler flaps slide back and forth. You can't hinge them in the normal manner as other hinges. It's neat how they slide in and out.

I will attach the center panel of the wing to the fuselage permanently.  

I worked on the center section about 8 hours in the last 3 days...coming along slow but sure.........I want everything to line up.

I'll send pictures later today.....Thanks for asking questions.

Status: offline 		I never considered ordering a set of plans for the second half of the wing......I'll remember that the next time.
Wing spar boxes finished and trial fitted. The boxes weigh a ton. I drilled a few lightening holes but am afraid to overdo it because of the stress the area will be taking.
Do you think that I could put more holes in the spar box and spars without losing strength?
Tomorrow I will attempt to build the center wing section around the spar boxes.

do you think that the holes I already drilled in it will weaken it?
should I put dowl rods in to strengthen the holes?
I think it was a bad move to drill these holes.

Status: offline 		Sebo, in many cases when you drill a structure you have increased the area and that can add rigidity. Use fiberglass or Carbon fiber to reinforce the center section (spar boxes). That is what I plan to do once I get to that part.

Status: offline 		No. I sheeted them with 1/8 balsa sheeting. Looks plenty strong and it came out well.........boy, that was a long time ago.....I had to go and look at it to be sure.

Status: offline 		I am just ramping up and starting the IV. I cannot tell you how disappointed and po'd at the quality of Cornell Michaels Kitcutter work.

Shoddy work, he went to lowes and bought cheap green 1/4 and 3/8 board and ripped it into 1/4x1/4 and 3/8 strips. All stringy and warped beyond use. Plus on the ribs none of the cutouts square or round were done, I have to now figure out how to cut all these flipping ribs and there's more I am sure that is not quality work.

To the LHS tomorrow to buy new quality wood.


I may start a lancair IV build, not sure yet....

Status: offline 		I'm sorry to hear that about the poor quality kit cutting.........mine was pretty good....
Don't give up on it......the effort will be well worth it....
You might try getting your wood online........I got a lot from Bud Nosen in years past.....I have a box that is 48 x 18 x 20 full of wood from him.........occasionally I go to the LHS for odd size stuff and plywood....get that at the local Hobby Lobby store.
I'll do some more work tomorrow.

cutouts on mine were just slight notches......had to cut them out.......no big deal on that, but all wood was straight and had good linear grains.

What you are seeing is an arrow shaft to route my wires through to the wing tip for navigation lights.
The arrow shaft is aluminum.No fiber rod or any fiber has been used anywhere so far.  Nothing but balsa, spruce, aircraft plywood and basswood has been used.
I've been working on the center section today......nothing to show for my efforts except wood chips and sawdust.
I plan to keep at it for another 2 to 3 hours yet tonight.
I'm getting anxious about seeing it put together soon....lots of work to do yet but I love to build. Flying is a necessary evil.
I just take my time and trial fit a lot before I glue it down.
