I believe I found the info some here wanted for norvel mod's. When I get some time, (more likely when I remember to do it) I will update the info on the page so folk wont think it is new info. be advised the page is old now and I do not have parts for Norvel engines and I wont do mods on them because of the lack of parts should I "weener" your precious little gem trying to modify it for you.
I hope this link is it

Parts are now slowly becoming available thru NV Engines (formally NORVEL) including cranks, cases and piston/cylinder sets. The pressure tapped backplate is also available.

BTW, thanks for the posting.

Toad, Thanks for putting it out there!

Do you have anything similar for the screaming VA engine?

Thanks RR

Way to go Toad, as the poster who suggested use of the Norvel .061 on the GLH, I now feel almost vindicated.
I went to Roberts yesterday to get ya some 64th ply but alas it was all gone.
I'll give ya one of the two I got for me, sorry for not thinking of ya.
Please don't beat me massa sir.

YAY! this is the page that got me into REALLY modding and tinkering with my engines. Might I add, the crank mod is #1 propriety even if you only have a bigmig.

Lovin' Toads work as always!

thnx guys. dont worry bout the ply mike.
I think the only thing I did to VA's was making sure the crank was not to tight in the case. tried the skirt thing on em.. didn't seem to matter at all on that engine. would be fun to turbo plug one though. sweet little non brg little gem.

I do owe Honker a huge apology. had a couple of his Norvels for well over a yr while I moved shops and homes. Got to ship those back to him now. (so glad I didn't lose them) I feel like an ass and hope mike don't beat me about my loins for my obvious neglect to the 1/2a folk the past yr or so.

Toad: You mention in the article that the pressure backplates are getting hard to find... I've got... spares.. Need a few?

Oh thanks Dave. I dont need any back plates for Norvels anymore. I got out of those engines a while back and have no need for parts for them.
The only 1/2a's that interest me now are the Cyclon's Profi's and the Picco's. Mostly the Picco. Racing the cheapo .15's out this way now. Got to admit the 15's are easier to deal with and it looks like they will last a long time not to mention the cheap cost to stay in the game. I would have stayed with the 1/2a size if the locals wanted too. Not much fun to race if others wont play with ya. Folk want it cheap now and I can relate after having a couple of rough yrs financially.

I've got 3 of the piccos but am leary of building something until I know what I can get away with and not break the crank like some of you guys are doing. The engine is heavy so if I design a plane around it I would up a creek if I had to retrofit any other 1/2A.... My airplanes tend to be very small with as short of a nose moment as possible so losing a bunch of nose weight would be an issue. I've gotten as far as drawing a twin for either the Picco's or Norvel .074s-it has forward sweep so balance is all the more critical.

the stock picco crank isn't usable in my opinion. the rest of the engine is very good. best parts Ive seen.

What is a good material for making a crank? Case harden only? Seems like a hell of a lot of effort to set up fixtures to make one or two cranks...

If they could have only made the wall thickness another .020 or so thicker...

Ive had good success with A2 , easy to get air quench tool steel. tooling up to do cranks is an effort. Once all that is made the cranks come out relatively fast and easy.
to do just a couple is a lot of effort though. So if ya planned on just getting one Picco or two going, it isn't worth the effort. The only reason I can think of to even start the effort would be if you planned on using them for serious competition where cost or effort spent is not an issue.

I have access to plenty of A2, D2 and S7 at work. I wonder if S7 would be better as it's a shock resistant steel.....

If there were interest, a run of these might be in the cards... The only problem is that I would have to work on them as was convenient rather than say "I'll have them in two weeks". Government work never works out as fast as you'd like it to...

It wouldn't be too hard if the crankpins were pressed in.  I think that would be strong enough.  Would drawing back the old crank make them tougher, or maybe just keeping the revs down to 22,000 or whatever?  The little 4 inch props sound great but are pretty hard on even a good motor.

I did a few from S7. they don't break but the crank pin wore out very fast. good for shock but not so good in wear is what I found. 8620 makes a good one if ya carburize it (PITA)
Go with A2. 8mm shaft and bore the case to accept it, get a new rear bearing (8mm id) I ran 10 of em off pretty quick. they will harden to 60+rc ..perfect. wont break or wear prematurely. if you go a different route let me know your results.

Well that's good news! Always good to be busy doing things you enjoy.

Hopefully when you find some more time we will catch you back in our humble little forum with a new fast plane sporting a tricked out 1/2a engine!

Good luck with your boxers!
