Wanted: Source for strut material for 1/4 scale Vailly L-19 Bird Dog

I recently traded for this airplane and it came with only one wing strut. This leaves me searching for a replacement. Obviously I could get some spruce and plane it down to the size and shape that I want but I would rather invest my limited time in getting this bird back into the air.

I hit the LHSs today and neither of them stock suitable wood or aluminum material. But, when I look at all the planes hanging from the ceilings may of the large high wing planes have nice streamlined wood struts and the biplanes have nice cabanes made out of similar material. Someone is making the stuff.

I've searched a couple places online and I'm coming up empty.

Thanks,
Paul

Skidman,

I order mine from http://www.toni-clark.com/

Download their catalog and check out all the goodies from them. Lots of sizes available in stainless airfoiled and other tubing.
Not cheap, but the best.

Cheers.....

Doug

If you check a real L-19 you will find that the struts are not airfoiled they are more of an oval transitioning to a somewhat rectangular shape at the ends. With this in mind getting bass wood stock and sanding to shape would be better fo a true scale appearance.
Also if you are not too far along in the build compare the elevator outline against a good 3 view, the Valliy 1/5 scale plan profile does not match.

Thank you for all the great advice and sources.

Since this is a rebuild of an old but very nicely built bird, I'm afraid that I did not research the cross section of the struts - yet. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi, J3 struts are more tear drop shape, not airstream shape like a supercub.

I ended up ordering a stick of the "Jury Struts" part way down on the following page: http://carlsonaircraft.com/struts.html
$28 for a 6 foot length

I know it ain't quite scale but there are other upgrades that I'll do to the airplane first.

Found this other site a little too late: http://www.flygtm.com/products.php?type=struts&kit=2001 but it may be too narrow for scale.

Thanks for your help!
Paul
