How expensive this hobby is is directly related to how much you can afford to spend on it. For me it's expensive because I live on a fixed income (SSDI) and have subsequently low disposable income. I have to plan every expense, which limits what I can afford to do. On the other side of things I know folks who wouldn't hesitate for an instant before dropping $20,000 or more on a new jet.

''Expensive'' is far too relative a term for definitive declarations.

Most people will spend around $2,400.00 per year on a standard gas, glow, or electrics. You are always replacing batteries, and the stripped servo on occasion. An electric motor isn't going to last forever, and a gas piston will need repair some time down the road. My experience is that glow is the most affordable option for someone on a limited budget, and those would be in the .40 size, preferably an OS two-stroke. The only option that would cost less, would be a park flyer. Still, $2,400.00 per year is the same as my car payment. And my car can take me a lot more places than an RC plane, plus it'll get me and the plane to the field anyway. Might as well add your vehicle costs too, in that case. So, if you own a good running car free and clear, and are willing to stick to a park flyer (unless you have a large back yard or park that allows RC within walking distance), I would say $1,500.00 would be reasonable, and that would include AMA insurance and club membership with the transportation costs included. This hobby is not a good option for someone who doesn't have a job and a steady place to live. That's just the reality of it.

For me it was $500 plus for less than 5 min total flight before it became a lawn dart.

I am going to be at least another $200 and a month building to get what I could salvedge from that investment flying again.

I've been a Platinum Member with Tower Hobbies for eight consecutive years now. That means I gave them at least $3,000 each year for the past eight years. Add to that, the 20 years prior when I was just a Gold Member. I'm also a Platinum Member at Hobby King. I also buy engines and many other R/C related items from other companies and hobby stores. They send me Christmas cards every year to thank me for the business/money I give them!

Then, I buy a few plane kits and BVM jets each year. That goes well into the thousands too. I never crash any, so my hangar is over-crowded. I hope I live long enough to fly them all!

I managed to sell two planes this past year, but sold them for 25% of my cost. I don't even want to think about the 100's of hours I put into building each of them. So there's more of a loss/expense.

I also buy thousands of dollars worth of R/C equipment through the RCU classifides each year. I go to the field twice a week on average. With that in mind, I burn up two gallons of nitro fuel (at $18 a gallon), and a few gallons of gas each week. I'm sure I'm forgetting other expenses, but that's enough for now.

Just starting to add all this up is getting me sick.

Now, I pretty much have all the planes and jets I will need for the rest of my life, unless I find a deal that is too good to pass up (which I usually find). So, lets add another $4,000 to this financial tragedy. If I'm lucky enough to live long enough, I can cost-average this hobby down to about a mere $5,000 a year (plus fuel). Otherwise, if I die in the next 5 years, this will really become an expensive hobby, and I'll be one really pissed off corpse.

Now, what were you saying about this hobby not being expensive?

Always gotta have some rich showoff in the crowd...must be nice

Im new to this and in the prosess of building my first plane, so far the cost has not been to bad i just get a few bits hear & there, besides even thow iv not yet got to the stage of flying the pure enjoment & relaxation is well worth the cost! Plus the fact that building this kit is teaching me how to be patiant, normally if it its not going my way i throw it out the window (my 2 week old nintendo wii was the last thing across the garden) but with the sence of pride/achevment going in to this build not one part has left the table & yes there has been times its not going the way i like but then i just walk away have a cig then try again! That in its self is a big achevment for me!!!

I think this hobby is cheap compared to other hobbies (golf, boats, renting a bar stool, or any of a million other things.)

And now that we're getting really good stuff out of China for such little money, there hasn't been a better time to fly RC.

If you build/fly rubber powered FF and indoor microfilm models, your materials costs can literally be under $10/year. I've built a ton of little stick/tissue rubber jobs over the years, and none involved any significant monetary investment. Seeing a well trimmed stick/tissue rubber job flying around silhouetted during a sunrise or sunset is a thing of beauty. I wish my arm was good enough to really toss HLG's, I had a blast with them as a teen.
