Hi John, do you anticipate any major modifications to fit a DA/DLE 50/55 engine on this plane? Could be wrong but I seem to remember reading the older razorback needed firewall mods or something for a 50cc motor? Thanks!

Show871,

I think the firewall is up to the task of any 50cc engine. The larger engine will fit in the cowl fine and the extra weight will help with the CG. The length from standoff to prop drive washer is fine and you will need to extend the DA out about 1/4 of an inch or so. I believe the firewall is tall enough to make the mounting work as well.

A 50cc engine would bring this monster to life!!!!!! The 40cc engine flies it well here in Illinois but we are at sea level. If you are up around 3 - 4,000 feet of elevation and have to deal with high temps the larger engine would probably help a bit. I know my Robart composite P-47 is awesome with the Evo 80 in it. Yea a G-62 engine would fly it, but a little more power is always good.

More videos will be up this week.

I saw the new P-47 at SEFF last week, looked and flew great. The large hatch makes installation of an electric system a snap. The dummy engine works well with the Power 160 or a Hacker up front. On a 10S5000 pack and a 18x10 or 18x12, 2500 watts or so should make it jump !

John - Where can we find a 1/6 scale pilot for these birds? It would be best to have one with a torso, since the detailed cockpit has a seat. Might have to cut his legs off at the knees, but we can do that. Louie

Hey Louie,

I used one of the 1/6 scale pilots from the Elite Aviator group I had lying around. You can find them on EBay.

Century Jet Models also stocks an aray of pilots in teh 1/6 scale size. I am sure there are others out there.

This is a WWII bird, using a gijoe 12" pilot figure would be more appropriate an way more cost effective. Many available on ebay.

I looked but may not have found the right figure, they all looked pretty crude. Did you have a link to an example? Thanks, Louie

The 1/6 scale pilots you find on EBay work great. They all seem to bring around $100.

They are also all about 12 inches tall and it fine in the model. No need to cut the legs off.

The GI Joe's work well too, just routinely do not have the correct clothing.

The one GI Joe listed is a deal compared to what is normally offered up.

The Centuiry Jets website has them for about $50, but you have to paint them. I am sure there are others out there.

@ Ron101,
P-47's should begin to ship next week.

Thanks John - I expected to have to shorten the pilot's legs where they go under the instrument panel - isn't that a solid partition? Or do you make holes and just stick them thru? Louie

Hey Louie,

Nope, the legs extend under the instrument panel, they don't interfere with anything. The instrument panel is not a solid partition.

There is a 5 or 6 minute walk around video of Johns P-47 in the video gallery at http://www.palosrc.com/ . He brought the plane to our club meeting as one of many things he talked about. He said it now has 3 flights on it. and there will be more construction videos about it coming soon.

Hey guys,
I flew the Thunderbolt again this past weekend and lost a muffler. In talking to a few of the guys in the office, this is pretty common on the Evo engines. Seems like there is some type of expansion/contraction issue between the engine and muffler that is not entireably compatible.

I had this issue on the Evo 80 and was not aware of it on the smaller engine.

Ths fix I have is to use a 5mm x40mm bolt and drill the head of the bolt for a safety wire hole. The bolt head lives on the outside of the muffler. Once installed, you safety wire the bolts with some .025 stainless safety wire and they never come loose again. I will post pictures within the week for reference. Just wanted you guys to know of the issue I had come up with and what the fix was. This fix has been flying on my Robart P-47 /Evo 80 combo for over 2 years now.

Hey John,

Thanks for the update.  I wasn’t aware of any issues like this with Evolution gassers.  I’ll be looking forward to the pictures so I can see how you fixed the problem.
