try covering the bottom missle red and the top bright but not flourescent yellow. if you feel so inclined, airbrush missle red water floting over the leading edge of the wing over the top. that looks really cool. red white and blue are hard to see because clouds and fog are white/light gray, and the sky is blue, and as you get farther away, it is harder to tell the color difference from the plane to the sky. you will never have a hard time seeing yellow and red. however, if you do pinstriping it will be harder to see and orientate yourself.

I found neon pink on the bottom very see able from far distance and white on top with some kind of stripe or contrasting pattern also if using neons always put them out of direct sunlight because they do fade some faster than others.Dave

I was thinking about a gradient for my next project.

I'm getting tired of the same old.

one thing i can recommend NOT using is transparents. i thought i was doing a good thing by going with trans flourescent red on top and trans flour yellow on bottom but that scheme has been a nightware visibility-wise. i've tried a long white strip across the bottom (nada) followed by solid decal strips of yellow at the tips to no avail.

not excited about having to re-cover the plane but i know i'm going to lose it to orientation problems if i don't do something. i was about to order some solid flourescent yellow and red but now i'm wondering if i'm better with just plain bright yellow/red? i'm also going to try to add some contrast stripes of probably blue on the yellow bottom and maybe white on the red top? when adding stripes do people just buy whole rolls of covering and cut their own?

I am concerned about this because I am trying to decide what to do about my Ultra Stick 60. The Transparent Yellow on both sides is screwing me up. I was thinking of just putting black on the bottom (it's what I have lying around)
I put a HUGE vinyl stick on the top that says "ULTRA STICK" in white...

What do you think?

if you get into flourescents, you may loose them when the sun hits them because they get so bright

All of my planes body and wings are yellow with the control surfaces in bright red. I use the holographic trim on the leading and it stands out nicely in the sun. I just cant see white with my eyes, however, thats my eyes. Not all people are alike. Thats my opinion.

Did my last one red with white accents. Thought that would work well, wrong! Almost lost it last evening. Somebody called landing and I swung out long to stay out of the way, with the sun low behind me the plane just turned black. Got it headed toward me by watching which wing dropped when I moved the stick and put it away. No more big patterns in evening light for me! For me, military blue and yellow training patterns seem to work best. I guess everything I build is going to look like a PT-19.

When the plane "silhouettes", there's no color at all that can help!
Just nudge the sticks... and try to remember which it was going when last under control.
Been there... repaired that!

Read this article by Dr. Robert Suding. It goes into very specific detail about using colors for visibility.
