5.2 - 5.5 volts to the ignition. Tried for couple of hours this morning and yet again no luck.

I dont know what to do. I am going to put this project on hold until further notice. I am too frustrated to continue besides with a sledgehammer...

Only stationary now. Run videos will follow later on.

This is the FIRST EVER start of this engine. All tuning is in the woods. Only assumptions so now the tuning starts because it works. We got it running but halfway of the video one of the spark plugs die so the latter part it only runs on one cylinder. Temps 130 Celsius. Revs like crazy, clutch engages at 6000 rpms. All systems working but I need to make the starter system better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHP3GMn0FW8

I am the tall guy on the video.

So why didn't it start before? Have you found the reason why it didn't work?

It is very loud, I like it!

The battery drill I used earlier didn't have enough power to spin the engine in higher gear. Only on lower gear. That was not enough to start the engine. Additionally I had flooded the engine with trying to start it so many times. The most typical fault to problems is the stupid user, undersigned here

Jari I've done a similar thing in the past.
Trying to start an old chainsaw engine with a power drill (not battery) but I had it on low gear instead of high and it didn't spin fast enough to kick the engine over.

So you're not alone.

Good to see it run and.... did you jump a little in the first video when it started ?

You got it It tried to throw the starter gear and holder off my hands and shot the first real bangs at the same time. The sound quality is really crappy in the both videos. But I'm very happy that it is finally running and the powertrain works. I'm especially happy about the clutch, I don't need to do anything to it.

That's good.

Typical that it was something so simple in the end.
It's usually the way though.

And... it looks cold there.

I used to live in Sweden but I prefer it here in Australia.
Don't miss the cold and snow at all.

Good to hear that i am not the only one that has experienced this, but none of us thought that this was the cause here either, hehe! Nice to see that you got it started, seems like it was just before you developed a big hole in your head from all the scratching, Jari Looking forward to see more of this beast! And again, an Escort, wohoo!

I've done it in the past with 1:1 cars too....
Spend a whole day, sometimes a weekend trying to get it to start.

Timing out by 180 degrees, no fuel, no rotor in the distributor etc etc.
It's always the little things.

Happened to me also before. Actually I didn't even think that the rotation speed would be a problem as the engine was spinning over 100 rpms a minute while cranking according to the tacho. I thought that would be enough. It started with 200 rpms.

Thank you guys for being patient and friendly even if I was loosing hope.

Ha ha ha,
this far from finished. Now the testing begins and I already re-designed the starter system to be operated with one hand only as now it needs both hands which is not good. I am also yet to discover the possible problems or design errors that can be seen or heard when I start to actually drive this thing.

Well mostly starting difficulties.

Here's what I've done after the first videos:

- new starter/work bench
- lots of parts becoming loose all the time, so mainly looking after that and applying threadlocker
- few small design error fixes (shimming)
- carb tuning today and ignition check and temperature checks

So the usual basic stuff, nothing that interesting. I took a new video but it is practically nothing that you havent already seen before. One good thing is that even with incomplete carb tuning the engine idles very nicely at 3000 rpms. With a little additional tweaking I'm sure it will decrease even more. My target is to have a reliable idle at 2500 rpms. I also drove the car today for the first time. Sorry, no video about that since wife was out and so were the neighbours.

Mount your camera on the radio

That way you'll never miss a thing.
The best crashes and funniest things ALWAYS happen where there's no camera around.
