My basic plan is to build a 1/72 or bigger wet hulled rc akula from scratch as i don't feel like shelling out for the fibreglass hulls, are there any particularly good or recognised ways of making a submarine hull other than making a fibreglass mould  route?

My plan is to make an internal Skelton out of ply and then cover it in something i haven't decided on yet for the outer hull perhaps thin ply but that might e a bit delicate.

My questions are does my current planned route work or is it doomed to fail and is making a fibreglass mould and doing it that way as difficult as it looks and if not are there any good guides on how to do it.

Thanks in advance
twiggy

Unless you plan to make several hulls, a "fiberglass resign" mold is expensive. It's now $ 35 or more a gallon.

However FYI as an example

I had a feeling that might be the case, are the any perticularly recommended techniques for just producing one off hulls or is fiberglass the only way?

There is another method to copy a plug using a layered buildup of a rubberlike mold material. Such a mold is less durable than a fiberglass resin type, but may be suitable for limited reproductions. A google search should bring up several detailed discussions describing the method and materials.

Steve neil made a book called RC Submarine modeling for dumb asses
http://sneillfx.com/page28

It really is worth the purchase price.

There are also quite a few build threads on the "lost foam" technique on www.subcommittee.com
Most recently one from a guy doing his first scratch built Russian Alfa
