I have been considering going to the AMA N.A.T.S. this year, has anyone have any thoughts on what I should expect when I get there as this would be the first time for me going to this event.

Are you going to visit or compete? Regardless, first decide which part, or whole, of the NATs you wish to see. Go to AMA web site and find out when that is happening.
Once you decide when, make any reservations as soon as possible. Don't expect to be close if you wait until a couple months before the event. Right now I'm betting that the competitors have already taken up most of the rooms within some 15 miles of the AMA Facility.

You can expect to see a varied amount of activity, depending on whichever events are being flown when you are there. Competitors are usually very busy. Do not think them unfriendly as they are very busy just being prepared for their events, and ready when they are called. Competitors at the NATs are not tour guides. The events are run on a schedule and sometimes weather screws up well planned schedules. The NATS is NOT the typical Club Hosted Event, It is serious business.

So be sure to visit AMA Headquarters, however they too are busy as most personnel have assigned extra tasks during the NATs.

NOW DO NOT MISS THE MUSEUM. THAT IS THE PLACE TO TAKE SOME TIME if you really love model aviation. I'm partial as I can just stand for hours admiring all and much I have seen before.

ENJOY a great experience as you visit the NATS and AMA.

One year my son and I went to see the RC scale event at Muncie. Turns out the scale area was closed off to non-fliers. We saw nothing! Spent the day in the UC area where we could get close and admire their models. Only went once.

Come on down or over or up to the Scale Aerobatic Nats! (IMAC)
more than welcome to stop by and say to any of the pilots or staff!
Love to have interested visitors out there!

I filled out the paperwork to compete in the Scale NATS this morning. My first stab at competition after flying for 26 years.
It is something I have always wanted to try so I signed up for fun scale open. I have down loaded the 2012 competition
regulations and am in the process of picking out a flight routine. Time to start practicing.

GREAT! Now I assume that you are in for RC. I am trying to get some stuff together to go back to my younger days and try CL Sport Scale,
alomg with what I suppose is an unofficial event, CL 1/2A Scale as advertised in Bill Boss' column, CL Scale, Feb. MA. pages 135-136. Sounds like FUN.
Depending on other schedules I may try the RC Fun Scale.
I also intend to resurect my last designed CL Stunter, many years ago which was a far better machine than the pilot was a driver. I did win several contests
with it around the Chicago area. I think this year I can get two done. I am busy.

Congratulations Mike for stepping the big step. Starting out at the NATs is a GIANT Step. Best of luck to you. Way to go.

Good show eindecker! Which event or events are you going to enter? I have not participated in a NATs since the 1973 Oshkosh Nats. That was the first NATs off the Navy bases since way back around 1950 or whenever that first started. I was the AMA Manpower Director there and it was a job. HA!

It will be a new experience for me also. Hope we can meet up there.

Are you an Eindecker fan? I am too. Kind of that is!

I'm sure that there will be time for the three of us to meet up. I'm planning on staying on site.

By the way, is that one of those SR Batteries Eindeckers?

M-Cal. It is an SR kit. There were some things I did not like too well. However it does fly but is a handful. It could use more than the G-23 that is in it. That may not be the main problem. It tskes off with plenty power, and goes along OK at 1/2 throttle. Give it full throttle and it leaps ahead then comes back to the same speed. I think that big cowled bulkhead simply is one big speed-brake. I don't fly it often, just at warbird events and such. It's not really scale.
One funny is that I balanced it according to kit instructions even though I knew that was way TOO AFT. That first flight was like I was a drunk 3D pilot. Back to the board and to what I knew it needed. 15 ounces of lead in the cowling made a better machine.

Eindecker 3, if you are going to fly yours in a scale event I have some documentation showing that there was a rebuild that had real ailerons and an elevator on the stabilizer. I seem to recall that there are several such modifications around the circuits now. I have seen a couple of the BUSA kits fly and IMO they are considerably better than mine. Yours certainly looks very clean. Great job.

Do I see a Dawn Patrol at the NATS????

Well, I did some reading on the registration form and I am thinking that I would need to enter under the RC fun scale or the sportsman scale option. I will be taking my Eindecker for my entry.

I am not sure if I can make it to the NATS this year due to the high cost of gas. I can afford it  but it would put a dent in my budget.

I hear ya. The only problem is that, in the future, gas prices are unlikely to be significantly lower than they are now. Even if the price were to drop by 50 cents/gal, there is only a <$30 difference for a 800 mile round trip (assuming ~15 mpg).

Of course, maybe our jobs will be better next year, and prices won't bother us so much. I'm not holding my breath for that, though. I figure that if I want to do something, I might as well go ahead and do it now.

You want to see the world's best in Scale? Come on down to Lakeland Fl, May 1-6. Those are the dates for Top Gun, and you won't ever see anything like it in Muncie.

Hi Chris,

Muncie is only about 2 to 2.5 hours from home so I should have been going every year.

But I got hit with some last minute complications that kept me from going dangitall.

Next year.
