This is something Ive been fiddling with just today lol

http://www.3dvia.com/models/1BA0CB1123350719/buggy#

Using Solidworks, the spaceframe is done with 3d sketches and weldments.

It weighs 15kilo as it sits lol and Im thinking of using a 52cc chainsaw engine with a few mods. A simple forward reverse gearbox and disc brake also. Unsure if I want the complexity of 4x4 yet.

It doesnt need to go fast, just have a bit of torque for fun.

Questions & thoughts?

This is a work in progress

sounds good mate ill keep track of this!

in stead of a chainsaw engine why not a pocket bike engine plenty of aftermarket upgrades for later on

Weldments....grrrrrr.

Looks good so far. Have you used 3divia a lot? Just curious as it's something I was considering working with as well.

thanks everyone

yeh weldments can be a pain in the ass, that for sure, but on the flip side who wants to model every compound bent piece of pipe individually and then make an assembly? *face/palm* 3d sketches are a piece of piss once you get the hang of it, having some prior 2d sketches making up the basic layout makes things alot easier.

3dvia is something I only newly discovered and used it for this, its surprising it doesnt have solidworks format since its a dassault sytemes thing :S weird, so I saved the assembly as a STL file and uploaded it, hence there is no colour and it will no doubt fall apart when imported back into SW. 3dvia has free accounts btw, this is a free account. That turned out to be a 11mb file.

Im basically using stuff I have in the garage already except the 16x1.2mm ERW tube ($30aus for 18 or so metres) and I will make my own bender of sorts with a small screw car jack, heck if I go down to the 12.7x1.2 ERW I can almost use a plumbers copper pipe bender, and save 500gms in weight.

So the 52cc chainsaw was pretty strong when it was a chainsaw. A mate basically dropped it whilst cutting a tree down (dumbass) so the plastics need replacing (what do they say about chainsaws and girlfriends? lol )

I plan on making my own 6 : 1 gearbox with reverse. This just being a chain drive one side and spur gears on the other and a dog engagement inbetween ran by a servo. Possibly the same servo as the throttle so I can select from one to the other without jamming the box.

Im considering doubling up 2 x 15kilo servos I can get off ebay for the steering, but sure about this. Ive even considered a tiny power steering setup (yes hydraulic) controlled by a servo - but highly doubt this will occur due to lack of patience lol

I will probably make custom shocks due to the weight of this thing, MTB shox will be a tad too heavy and expensive and 1/5 scale stuff too light and/or too expensive. When my lathe arrives it should take no time to get something made.

Cheers

lol It doesnt seem to bad for the price, but we'll see.

Im not up with the radio side of things (maybe I should do some searching on here) But I bought a 6 channel 35Mhz transmitter and reciever for $15 on ebay a while ago. Now the question to anyone savvy with these things, will the CDI ignition effect this frequency and also is this a bad radio frequency to use for any other reason? I dont intend on using this thing for competition or anywhere were other RC vehicles are being used. Just wondering.....

Also, another thing I want to have a crack at is, a 6volt alternator that can cope with being directly coupled to the chainsaw, so its always running, clutch engaged or not. I cannot find anything of the right size and shape or anything that will cope with 10,000rpm max speed, or anything that has variable fields. So my answer to this is a stepper motor that can cope with these speeds and I will make a custom rotor with a coil so I can vary the fields to maintain 6v. I understand this will be a little adventure into alternator physics, but thats half the fun.... lol ....all because I cannot be f***ed waiting for a battery to charge lol "filler up and GO!!"

I will have a solidworks model of the forward reverse gearbox soon.

im very interested in peoples comments opinions, even bagging me for hair brain ideas lol. I do more model engineering, but still seems relevant here..

Also anyone who does their own CAD work. This is a handy website for standard items. http://www.traceparts.com/

Cheers.

I myself have looked into the "alternator" theory for radio controlled vehicles and have been told by a few master electricians thats its very possible with the right combination of resistors, capacitors, diodes, doohickies, and thingimajigs. same concept as a regular car..battery to start, and alternator to charge the battery and run the electronics..

Keep updated on your findings with this.
I was looking at using a small 1/10 scale electric motor as an alternator run off of a gear mounted on a drive shaft. Not to sure yet if or how it would work.

Some of those pocket bike motors have lighting and starting systems.
They may have parts that would adapt.

No worries lawman36

And thanks for the tip tapkoote, Im waiting to see how much current this big servo uses before I choose a charging system. Do you know how much current a pocket/pit bike engine can produce? I will be using a 6volt battery from something like a Honda AG bike.

I have other links to share, once I get around to sorting my Favourites out.

No I don't, but most any lighting here is 12V
how ever if you come across old BSA or triumph motor cycles
they have 6V systems in their flat trackers.
But the rotor alone is about $200

some food for thought
when i had bikes here W/6v. systems I'd test them with a 12v battery
put a nail in the third cell, you've got 6.6 volts.
for a permanet set up i'd use a brass screw

Has anyone figured out a way of making the servos come back to their 'home' position once the car is out of range of the transmitter? Ive always wondered about this from when I had my little tamiya super hornet, if i let it get away there was nothing to turn it off.

Is there such a thing as a transmit/recieve loop that when its broken the servos go back to neutral? Or better still have a kill button.

A 15 to 30 kilo petrol powered car isnt someting you want to get away on you....

Nevermind the servos or failsafes, the only way to go is to install a killswitch from KillerBee That said, using a failsafe in line with the servo cable will make the servo return to a certain chosen point, but still they will not do what the killswitch will do.

Thanks Lars, I just typed KILLERBEE into Google and the first 50 results where "killerbee destroys servos" or "KillerBee has damaged everything" lol

Heres the direct link http://www.killerrc.com/store/store.php#killerbee

Im guessing the alternative failsafe you mentioned would be a spring acting against the servo the whole time the servo is in operation, the force required to do that will kill the servo for sure.

I like the killerbee idea though, as long as its not glitchy and sensitive.

lol shall do

Heres a live axle idea Ive been playing with for a large scale rock crawler.

It has centre point geometry and caster. Im not so keen on ackerman for anything 4x4, it puts funny uneven loads on the axles, especially when the diff is locked. Also you will find many commercial 4x4's and sports cars have minimal ackerman, sports cars because it creates perculiar handling characteristics at higher speeds, the wheels need to be more intune with each other (driving the same line)

lol

I am I am, building ideas getting parts and seeing how it works on CAD. And still waiting on lathe. Im in no rush. I know there is a few interested in how I am going about this.

Heres a picture of some of the stuff I have got together lol.... waiting on the big servo yet.

That's a good start.
Quite a beast of a chainsaw as well - what make is it?

With a tuned pipe that will be a right little ripper.

Speaking of which...... TUNED PIPE CALCULATOR

Something to read while you wait for lathe and parts

lol sweet thanks for that

The engine is a 52cc Bahramshahr chainsaw engine, no doubt from west asia..... it pulled like a homeless blonde when it ran. Nicely put together aswell. I want to tune it to produce low end torque if at all possible, this will probably need a slightly higher oil content in the fuel.

Below is a picture of an early idea I had for a forward reverse wetclutch gearbox. Its very simple and doesnt include the initial reduction. Plus its massive lol

Now im not showing off here, ahem lol, but you wouldnt believe how simple a clutch like that is to make if you have a lathe and mill. But will be completely uneccesary for what I am making, due to the centrifugal clutch already there. But thumping it in reverse whilst driving in the wrong direction would have less impact on the drivetrain with this gearbox. The model is half finished, its missing the selector that puts pressure on the clutches (an over centre mechanism with springs will toggle between the 2), the bearings, the chain, etc...
