Hi Dan, Long time no talk. I've been waiting for my cores. Does it typically take this long? I paid him Friday before last and haven't heard a word or seen a package. Steve

Steve, no problem. Around three weeks is normal. You'll need other things like the balsa, Z-poxy Finishing Resin, some fine heavy weight fiberglass cloth. I'm anxious to get the building going so you can fly that beauty. Dan.

Yeah me too! The balsa will arrive monday, I have the Z-poxy and the fiberglass cloth. I paid Bob friday before last so it should be here pretty soon. The Giant Aeromaster continues to challenge me but I'm gaining on it. I have nights when I just can't get myself down to the shop but it's getting there. It doesn't help that I'm slower than molasses as well. I'll let you know when everything's here. Steve Oh yeah I'm learning how to paint from some friends and it looks like I'm going to be able to paint the Mustang myself which will make it even more special. I'm really getting the hang of it now.

Steve, I put together a prtfolio of the work you'll be facing when you get the cores. I've taken it up to the point of joining the wings. It will give you a chance to get prepared. Dan.

Thanks Dan, It's nice to see what it will look like as I go. I'm the kind of person that follows pictures better than words. Well the painting of the Aeromaster cowl just humbled me. I ran the wheel pants and will now need to sand and polish to get them to look good. Oh well I guess that's why they pay those painters so well. I'll be doing a maiden Sunday for sure now. ( I know, famous last words!) Take care, Steve

Hi Dan, The cores just arrived. I haven't opened the box yet as I'm still finishing up some projects. I'll be ready to start edge gluing the sheeting in the next couple of days. I'm really wanting to get going I just don't like leaving other things unfinished. Let's just say I'll be letting a pro paint the Mustang! Talk to you soon. Steve

OK. Great news. Get done with your other projects and then it's down in to the salt mines for a month or so. Here are some things to do.

Identify the cores and shucks with a felt tip pen. Although the airfoil is symmetrical, the wings are different because the top surface is flat. You'll be using the shucks on and off for some time and its worth while not having to figure out which core and shuck you have each time.

Sand the cores with a large block of 320 sandpaper. Do this gently and go fore and aft. Don't sand with the span. It is too easy to distort the airfoil that way. Sand until you see about 50% of the area shiny and the other 50% dull.

The cores are now ready for sheeting so work on the veneers.

Cut the balsa sheets to the length you will need. They all don't need to be 48 inches long.

Match up the sheets of balsa for a good butt joint and equal thicknesses. The better you get it here, the less work it will take later. Use the softer of the sheets for the leading edge.

Tape the joints together.

Hang a sheet over a table edge and run a bead of glue along the joint. Bring the joint on to the table and remove the excess. Remove it all since it's difficult to do it after the glue dries.

When they are all glued up, stack the sheets on to a flat surface with wax paper over the glue joint and stack some books on them to keep them flat.

Remove the tape when the glue dries and sand the joints. Sand across the joint. Use a sanding block and don’t get cared away. You don’t want to weaken them and you don’t want a wavy surface.

Put the cores on the veneers and mark them for a ¼ inch over hang all around. Roll the cores on the wood to get it right. You also want to keep in mind that the best surface of the veneer should be against the core. You can always correct the outer surface but if there is a discontinuity on the inside it will always show up.

All right. The next chapter is the sheeting.

Tell me how things are going and post some images as you go along.

Dan.

OK Dan I think I can handle it so far. Baby steps right? What is the best glue to get for attaching the sheeting to the core. I have some Zpoxy that you said to get. Is that for sheeting or making the saddle fillet? I've got Sig Bond for the edge gluing.

Use the Z-poxy Finishing Resin for bonding the sheeting to the cores. I've used it on about 20 models and have had some horrendous crashes to prove its worth. When the wings break apart, they fracture as nice big pieces with no splintering of the sheeting. It makes for a very easy reassembly. A little morbid, but a good fact of life. I have been using .8 ounce of each part for each of the four veneers. My wing area is 1300 square inches. You should use one ounce of each for the Cosmic Wind 1700 square inchs. Looking ahead, you will need a strong flat surface to support all the weight, around 150+ pounds that it will take to compress the shucks and core during the bonding process and a thick flat board on top to evenly spread the force of all that weight. I bought a sheet of Malemane (spelling?) from Home Depot for that purpose. You can see it in one of the images I posted. Dan.

I've got a 55 gallon fish tank that's 48" long and 12" wide. That'll hold up to 458 pounds of water. I've got a fish tank pump that I can use to move the water back and forth from a 55 gallon water bucket that I have on hand. Pretty handy huh? I went out and bought a 48" straightedge today so I can get these edges all trued up. So I should be able to get started soon. I'll go back to home depot tomorrow and get the mella whatever board. Maybe they'll know how to spell it!
