I've recently acquired this old racer in a trade. The only info I have is that the original wing was destroyed in a hangar incident but the fuse was not damaged. I have the foam cores and cradles for the new wing but have no info on how to build this wing. I'm pretty sure the racing planes have evolved to make this one non competitive but it sure would make a fun plane to just go out and play with. I'd like to see it fly again if someone can point me in the right direction for building a wing. Thanks.

Oh yeah, there was a business card glued inside. Horndog Aircraft by David Bridi but the phone number didn't work.

Nice looking plane, hope you can find out who the manufacture is/was so you can build a wing. Keep us informed and I'll ask our club members about it too and see if any of them recognize the plane.

Dave Birdi was Horndog Aircraft, and up to a few years ago was still making them. Sure hope you have luck in getting a wing as it would be nice to have such a model flying again. Maybe if you made a post in Kit Building where lots of us old timers hang out it might turn up something.

Karol

cowmags, That's a Bridi Cosmic Wind. Do you want a foam wing for it? Dan.

See if these guys can help.
http://www.bridiairplanes.com/

There's one on Ebay and they have been on RCU. What is the distance from the back of the spinner to the rudder hinge line? Dan.

Hi Cowmags,

The plane you have was for the giant scale formula 1 class. The Bridi cosmic wind was much smaller at 1/4 scale.. The plane should take about a 5" spinner as I recall. You may be able to reach Dave Bridi thru the USRA. The plane was designed for a 75 cc engine to race. For sport flying a G-62 would still do a decent job of getting it thru the sky. Another place to check is the scale pylon racing section here at RCU as they may be able to help as well.

Hope this helps

Carlos G.

You all have been a big help so far. Thanks for your input. Dan, the measurement you asked for is 71.5" from back of spinner to rudder hinge line. Is the wing you mentioned built already or is it the cores?

cowmags, Carlos is right. That's not the 1/4 scale Bridi Cosmic Wind but may be his son's larger version. He also made a Super Corsair at the same size. The full size Cosmic Wind was 14 feet long from the spinner back plate to the rudder hinge line. You measured 71.5 inches. That means that it scaled at 1/2.35. The wing span was 19.5 feet. Scaled down at 1/2.35 puts the model just at 100 inches, the requirement of the racing Carlos mentions. I can design a wing for you in foam that would fit but I need to know the airfoil in order to match the wing saddle that exists on the model you have. Here's an image of me with a model I designed that was featured in the January issue of Flying Models. I have my wings cut at www.flyingfoam.com. Dan.

Hey Dan, as I mentioned earlier I have no experience building this type of wing but I'm eager to give it a shot. I've built several kits and a few scratch built planes but nothing like this. Thanks again for your help. I do have some foam cores but they don't match the wingspan you calculated. At this point (especially after seeing the beautiful plane you designed and built) I'd like to see what you could come up with and go from there. Will a traced outline of the foam core airfoil work for you to design a wing? I can do that and mail it to you if you like. This is by far the most exciting model I've tackled yet and I aim to do it right. Thanks, Steve

Steve, I use Compufoil to generate airfoils. If you send me the tracing, I can try to match it as close as possible. What's the length of the wing opening in the fuselage? I sent you a PM. Dan

Dan, the wing saddle measures 23.5" front to rear and the center section foam core I have measures 23". I'll do a tracing and get that in the mail tomorrow.

Excellent. What's the span of the center core section? It's a little shorter because you will have to add a trailing and leading edge. PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy of the article I wrote. It describes how to make a foam wing. Dan.

Hi Steve, I got a three view of the Cosmic Wind and scaled it up to give me the 100 inch wingspan that was required for the class of racing it was desiigned for. My dimensions are in red. You can see that they agree very closely to the ones you gave me. Dan.

That's amazing, Dan. I think this is gonna work. I couldn't make it to the post office today, had to work late but I'll get the airfoil tracing out in the mail tomorrow. By the way, I'd like to put flaps on this wing to be able to land it slow. Is this a good idea? And can I do split or half flaps to keep the wing clean and fast?

Steve, thanks for working so much and keeping my Social Security payments coming.

I calculated the wing area to be 1760 square inches. If the model is built to scale, the horizontal area is 358 square inches. That makes it 20% of the wing area which is a little low but useable. I have my planes set at 22.5% to 25%. Verify the three dimensions you see at the tail. It would be nice if they are close.

I don’t know if the full size had flaps. I doubt if you would need them for this model. It has a very large wing, no retracts, no flaps and no heavy details like you find on the warbirds of this size. The model should wind up with a low wing loading.

Dan

The 7.25 measurement is actually 8.0
The 13.15 is 12.25
The 17.57 is 16.25
Hope this is ok. See ya tomorrow. By the way, you're welcome on the SS payments. Glad someone's gonna get to use it! I'm only 50 so it should be gone by the time i'm ready.

Steve, I got the tracing of the airfoil today. It looks like a symmetrical one. That means the upper surface and lower surface are the same around the center or chord line. What part of the foam cores do you have? Is it just the costant chord center section and not the outer cores? If it is symmetrical, the center section should fit in the saddle just as well either way. Check it out. Take another measurement of the wing saddle opening. Measure from the forward part of the leading edge to the rear. Dan.

Steve, The length of the airfoil you sent me is about 19.5 iches long if I add some for a leading and trailing edge. In a previous post you mention a length of 23 inches and an opening of 23.5 inches. Post an image of the core you have and the opening in the fuselage. Put the two together and take another shot. I need to see how they go together. Describe to me which part of the core the tracing came from. Dan.

Steve, I went back to the three view drawing and the 19.5 inch chord exists somewhere between the side of the fuselage and the wing tip. The core you have may not belong to the model. Dan.
