Status: offline 		I am going to be putting a DLE-50(if it fits) up front and I will be building the tail lighter than stock(I hope).

I have the laminated sheets for the fuse sides drying, I will start framing up the fuse tomorrow.

Status: offline 		I thought very light in my tail, eliminating most of the wood they recommended back there. I also used pull pull cables which help a lot with tail weight. I have a G38 on mine and still needed to add 2# of nose weight. I think the DLE 55 is close to the same weight as the G38, maybe a little more with the added ignition battery. That will be a good combo. I will be interested to see how well it fits and can be hidden inside the cowl. There is a lot of room. If you cant the engine to one side or the other, you may be able to get the plug concealed by your dummy engine. Now that I have had all of this time to think about combos, I would put a G62 in my next one. I doubt it would require any nose weight and the cylinder is 1" shorter than the DLE 55.

Status: offline 		I have seen a 1/4 D7 fly at the Owatonna warbird event that had a dl50. I am not sure anything can make them go faster than the drag allows

but the guy sure had nice power, and maneuverability with that motor.

I have the sheeting laminated for the front of the fuse and it is ready to apply the template and run thru the band saw. I plan on starting the 1st fuse side tonight. I need to dig out my DLE-50 and lay it over the plans and see how it is going to fit.

I will post some pics once I get some of the framing going.

Status: offline 		I have started on the 1st fuse side. It is going together pretty good.

This is my 1st attempt at framing with dowels but so far I like it. I spliced the upper longeron into a 1/4x3/8 stick stock where it will be hidden from the hood sheeting. I am using a 1/4" dia sanding roll in my drill press to put a radius into the end of the dowels at the joints. All the joints will be drilled,glued and pegged once it has dried and I can remove it from the table. I also spliced in a piece of balsa for the stab saddle.

I found it easier to fit the upright then cut the diagonal to fit and sand the radius until it all matches then glue them in place. Here are a few pics of my progress.

Status: offline 		At the risk of sounding stupid.. is there a reason you are using the dowels instead of just round ing the stock wood after framing it up? I realize you started without a kit..

Do you think the dowels will be stronger? I would assume they will be heavier..
just wondered.. it will fly well regardless...

Status: offline 		No Problem, not a stupid question it is just the way I wanted to do it

In reality it shouldn't really add much weight. The poplar wood is fairly light and yes it should be stronger. I am going to detail out the cockpit and the dowels should help in that respect as well. I am having to change things around slightly because of using the dowels but I usually change things the way I want them anyways.

I will add a few scale turnbuckles and wires in the cockpit area as well. I am attaching a pic I found of the DVII cockpit.

Status: offline 		Looking good Anthony. I believe your right about being stronger without significant weight gain. Would like to know what adhesive your using, just curious. Some years back I built some bamboo replica gazeebo's. Used the same technique and wood glue. Almost indestructable.

I am using med CA to glue the dowels. The joints will get drilled and pegged and I will use wood glue for that. It should make for a nice strong joint.

Status: online 		Anthony, wow, seems like fitting joints with dowels would be very time consuming and difficult !  You are the man....Was it hard to find straight dowels because everytime I look at the dowel selection  at the LHS they are always bent.

I picked the dowels up at the local Lowe's. They have a huge selection of dowels at a good price. I bought enough dowels to frame up the fuse for $8. It didn't take long to pick out some nice straight dowels.

The 1st side is off the table and I am pleased with it. I married in some square balsa stock at the tail end to keep it light and make it easier to mount up the stab later. The 2nd side is now on the board and I should be able to finish glueing it up tonight. Fitting the dowels isn't too bad once you get used to working with it. I am anxious to see how it will look once the sides are joined together. I have to pick up some more 1/8" ply to make the fuse formers and the fuse ply doublers.

It was also great to see the fuse side did not relieve itself once it was released from the table, very little stresses built into the structure.

I have both fuse sides completed and the ply doublers glued in place. I will be joining the fuse sides together today. I still need to cut the front fuse formers so once that is complete I will join the front end of the fuse together and let that dry until tomorrow then work the aft end.

Status: offline 		I did finally lay the DLE-50 over the plans and the motor will fit just fine. The top of the cylinder head comes to the top of the fuse side/bottom of the cowl top. Should be able to keep the spark plug and wire hidden in the dummy engine. I am moving the firewall back 1.1" from the location shown on the plans. I still may need to rotate the engine slightly but that will be determined after the framing is complete and the cowling built.

I am setting the firewall with 2 deg of down thrust and "0" deg of right thrust. I think setting right thrust on this plane would look bad. I wll post some pics of the fuse once the sides are joined together.

Status: offline 		The fuse sides are joined together(at the front anyways),
It took a while to get everything lined up properly but all came out fine. I will drill and pin the firewall while I am pinning the dowel joints in the aft end of the fuse. I added some extra tri-stock pieces for strenth at all the joints. I will let this sit a little while longer to make sure the epoxy has cured enough to continue with the aft end.

I do like the looks of the dowels in the fuselage. I need to start working on the scale tail skid before I do much more work to the fuse.

The fuselage on a D7 always reminds me of a big carp until you get that cowl on there

I will be interested to see how you like the handling of this plane compared to some of your Waco's. Sometimes i sweat taking mine out and flying it, but as long as it is running its nearly impossible to get in trouble.

I may have gotten ahead of myself a little. I added sheeting to the stab saddle and I didn't give any thought to access to the bungee for the tail skid. I have to rethink how I want to gain access.

Status: offline 		I am borrowing the tail skid design from Del Johnson that he is using on his V29 build(Thanks for the pics Del).

After looking it over It finally dawned on me I could just put a removeable 1/8 ply cover fron the tail post forward to the 1/8" balsa sheeting I had already installed. I cut the tail skid from Red Oak and the base for the bungee chord to attach to is made from spruce. I will pick up some 1/2" tubing to go over the dowel post for the tail skid to attach too. I am taking the rest of the day off from the build to watch the Daytona 500.

Status: offline 		Well since the race in under a rain delay I went back to work on the DVII.

I do not have the materials yet for the landing gear or the mounts so I went ahead and added the top fuse formers and stringers. I also discovered I made a mistake when I cut the balsa front fuse sides. These should have been flat across the front to allow for the cowl mounting. This was not clear on the plans and I did not look far enough ahead in the instructions. This required a little surgery to correct. The template was used to mark the line and a cut made and the material removed.
I think I will go ahead and start building that beast of a cowling.

I put the same prop in 20x8 on my DRI. I plan on buying a 22x10 for the DVII.

I haven't worked on the DVII anymore spent lastnight watching the race and too many honey do's tonight. Tomorrow is my birthday so maybe get a little time tomorrow evening.
