oopsie.

Neato eh? Now what?

Do I keep it in it's little box, and bring it out of my flying buddies to drool over, or do strap it into a gnat, or a pageboy?

Status: offline 		The TD .010 is a remarkable little engine. It's even more remarkable when it runs. It's even more remarkable when it's running on a flying airplane! A running and flying TD .010 is much more delightful to own than a NIB piece that sits collecting dust. Trust me.

Status: offline 		If you have a crystal ball to know what that engine could be worth in 20 years...would it be worth enough to replace all the great memories you could of had from flying it...?
OTOH, is it feasible to run it whenever you want with all the spare parts that go along with keeping it going...?
If you build a really neat plane for it that allows full aerobatics, decent climb, etc., that would be quite a gem.

Status: offline 		It's been nothing but a giggle flying my slightly (ha!) modified tee dee .020 powered Cannonshot around the local club, giggling like a lunatic and having an absolute ball.

It's small and cute, but maybe not small and cute enough! I have been heard at the field bellowing SMALLER! SMAAAAAALLER!

I have thousands of dollars tied up in F3A aircraft, and there's nothing quite like the joy of flying these teensy models.

I get regular comments when the engine won't start first flick of:" you should put an electric in that, then you won't have those problems"

My reply is usually along the lines of " bugger off, I built the aeroplane to play with the engine, if I get to fly it as well, it's a bonus!"

Oh dear It looks as though I'l be spending big at cox international . How about a stand-way-off scale staggerwing beech, based on the gnat?!

Status: offline 		The SMALLer and cheaper the radio gear gets the more flyable the 010 becomes. If you have one laying around, give it a try.

Status: offline 		You guys would not believe how well a TD .010 will fly an airplane when you use modern techniques and methods. I know it sounds cliche to say it because most on the forum have seen an .010 power some form of airplane well but you can really make a stand-out performing plane if you build it light, clean, use a modern airfoil, and play with props.

Status: offline 		If you want to really see your mates eyes pop out, put the .010 in a rudder only pageboy. Set the incidence and thrust line just as Ken Willard shows on the plans. It was too hot to fly with the R/C gear that Ken used back then so he put the prop on backwards to cut the power down. With a proportional servo it’s a whole new ball game. Put the prop on backwards til you get the feel, then turn it around, remove the gear and put on a show. Do hands off consecutive loops while still gaining altitude, barrel rolls the length of the runway and more. I guarantee when it lands no one will believe it is single channel. (They won’t realize that what seems to them as daring acrobatics are just simply you using rudder to control the attitude).
Absolutely the most bang for the buck of any model I’ve ever flown.

Now I' considering radio gear for said miniature version of a miniature aircraft.

Has anyone tried the AR-6400 style RX & linear servo bricks in a glow model?

Status: offline 		I've got some of the micro Parkzone birds and like them but would be leary trusting that gear in a buzzing glow powered airframe. Seems pretty delicate to me.

Status: offline 		I am using HS55's in my .010 planes. That's about as small as I would go in the brands I have used-maybe an HS50.

Status: offline 		I have a few HS 45's which I think would work. I've successfuly used HS 55's in 15 sized planes without trouble.

Status: offline 		Since you just bought the first issue .010 NIB, these are more rare and already command a bigger price than the second issue .010 (black plastic parts). I would keep this one as a retirement investment and ebay another one that is not NIB for a lesser price. There are lots out there.

Be careful with that..... The people that think these little engines of ours have 'value' are starting to pass away. It's sort of like folks who are into WW2 militaria, it will only be valuable until the old codgers that like the stuff kick the bucket.

On a very related note, I picked up THREE VA .049's this last week and have about $103 in them. At their peak a few years ago they would have been worth that much each. I wouldn't look to model airplane engines as a money maker unless you have something really exotic.

Status: offline 		Of course DeviousDave is right, there are probably better investments although occasionally an engine will really appreciate. For example, in 1968 I bought an unusual engine called an Aero .35 for around 40 bucks, I shortly thereafter sold it to a collector for $50.00. Several years ago, that collector passed away and I again bought the engine which was still NIB just like the day I sold it to him 40 years earlier. This time though, I had to part with $300.00, almost 10 times what I paid for it originally.
The other day, this same engine in the same condition sold on Ebay for nearly $800.00 and this is now the going price for this engine, 20 times the original price!

Status: offline 		ugh, I hate this. I built a prettner supra-fly about 2 years ago, and sized to make a real nice flier on my NIB OS 40 FSR.


WHen it came time to install it I coudn't, and went and bought a used 46fx for $50. I don't regret my decision, but I'm slowly accruing tonnes of motors that I may never start!

I'm becoming the curator of a museum of things that no-one else cares about!

Status: offline 		I sympathize with you as I have a tendency to do the same. If you could keep the .010 for 50 years it might be a good investment. I think it is about time you and I change our ways, I'll start.
I have a NIB Stanzel Tiger Shark G-line model kit along with a new 1938 Brown Junior model D engine which is shown on the plans... I'm going to build the model and use the engine and let the future sort itself out!
