Oh my God, this is the best thread in RCU in yrs. it is like I'm following you in your awesome road trip. Thx.
I'm so envious, I wish I had the time to do just that, drive around going to different events.
What vehicle are you driving? Are you staying in motels/ hotels?

Jeffee,
Cat, I don't remember any cat!: hell, at my age, I can now hide my own Easter eggs!

================
Lopflyers,
Just driving my chevy pick up and a 14' trailer.
The planes come out and the cot goes in: nothing fancy. I'm too much of a cheap SOB to stay in a motel (besides, after being in the 'corps', the cot is a luxury!).
As they used to say, if we wanted you to have a wife, we'd have issued you one!

Using a cot, I've gotten' soft in my old age:

Stuff:

My old plane stand can't handle 50 lb planes so I got some new 1 1/4" ID (OD=1 5/8") PVC pipe (nice to buy something in a store and get out for under 20 bucks!). Two 10' straight, eight T's and four elbows were needed. Home depot sells a nice 'scissors' device for a clean cut with no dust.
After dry assembly, I put tick marks for depth and alignment. I also 'stream lined' the design: the old one had extra elbows going to the plane support pipe which only made it wider and more difficult to store.
The glue dries fast so I worked from the top/down doing, usually, one piece at a time. Getting the top done first made it easier for me to get the legs parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground.

Some double layers of pipe insulation applied with that, now little used, electrical tape.
Some end caps on the tops would have been nice for protection but, instead, I made the insulation an inch longer to prevent hanger rash.

Next trip is only 40 miles away on Saturday. Going to Clinton model aviators in Wilmington, Ohio. A one day event. Never been there, before, but it looks like a nice all grass runway (my favorite).

Pratt & Whitney R-4360-20 test stand video:

My brother sent me this with comments:
Pratt & Whitney R-4360-20 first start
Below, you will find a great test stand video of the Pratt & Whitney 4360 Wasp engine introduced in 1944. Basically, the engine was 28-cylinder four-row air cooled radial engine. Each row of pistons was slightly offset from the previous, forming a semi-helical arrangement to facilitate efficient airflow cooling of the successive rows of cylinders, with the spiraled cylinder setup inspiring the engine's "corncob" nickname. A mechanical supercharger geared at 6.374:1 ratio to engine speed provided forced induction, while the propeller was geared at 0.375:1 so that the tips did not reach inefficient supersonic speeds. Initially, it developed 3,000 horsepower, later models gave 3,500 horsepower.
The 4360 powered the B-50, successor to the B-29 and later the B-36, to name a few. And although reliable in flight, the Wasp Major was maintenance-intensive. Improper starting technique could foul all 56 spark plugs, which would require hours to clean or replace. As with most piston aircraft engines of the era, the time between overhauls of the Wasp Major was about 600 hours when used in commercial service.
Why am I sending this to you? Because it looks and sounds neat. That's all. Just a test stand video of a newly restored engine. But turn the speakers all the way up. Bask in the roar of twenty-eight cylinders belching the sound of freedom. Also, the sound will most likely clear out the cat, your wife and any other extemporaneous people not accustomed to military sounds and the glorious roar of a Pratt & Whitney "round" engine. As the Warbird people say, "Jets are for kids."

June 16, general flyin at Clinton model aviators in Wilmington, Ohio.
40 miles.

Another real nice all grass field (bare foot grass) that is part of a full size runway, which, I don't believe is used any more. About 40 members out in farmland with no flight restrictions. A real nice bunch of pilots that put on a very nice meet and very good food: pulled pork for lunch and a great steak dinner at 6 PM.

My buddies, Ron, Jim and Doug and two other pilots all taxied out, in line, and took off with our warbirds. We kind of paired off in formation flying and had a great time.

Ron's BalsaUSA steerman and P-51.
Mike's wilga.

Was glad to see you again Sam,
You made some fine flights. I only managed 3 flights and the last one on my DRI it went in due to a control horn failure on the rudder not long after you left. The damage is not too bad and it will fly again just not anytime soon.
Later!!
Anthony

June 23, general flyin at Miami RC at Xenia, Ohio.
40 miles.

This was actually one club inviting another club for a picnic and flying.
Another field that I've never been too.
An all grass about 700' long, literally, in the middle of a farmer's farm: A gravel road went between two farm houses and crops were on all sides of the field: cool. No worry about bothering any neighbors!

Not a lot of warbirds but enough to have a lot of fun: My buddies, Jim and Doug along with Rick and I flew formation flying about 3 or 4 times. Pretty cool to have four warbirds (Z P-47 and TF P-47 and two TF P-40's) flying in close formation. Unfortunately, I can't take a picture while flying!

I managed seven flights on a perfect day.

Jim and Doug flying really slow over the runway.

June 29/30, Big bird flyin at FORKS RC club at Amanda, Ohio.
100 miles.

About an 800' all grass field on a land fill.
As usual, a nice group of about 80 members that put this show on.
The temperature was in the low 100's but the 'dedicated' showed up!
I managed nine flights.
A little noon time show with about five of us warbirds in the air.
