FORKS (cont)

I was surprised the big 150" high wing did not sell as the owner only wanted 2 grand for a RTF plane.
A big storm came in Friday late afternoon. 80 MPH winds. We knew it was coming so we removed all our pop up covers and put all the planes in the club house so no damage was done. Being on a land fill, the wind kicked up a huge cloud of dust. Pretty impressive, watching everything from the club house. Lots of power outages at the local towns. After the storm, the temperature dropped about 25 degrees. The club brought out pizza and we watch 'red tails' at the club house.

The rural towns can still have the 50's style theater.
150 years ago, no expense was spared to build the court houses and post offices.

The bucolic scene of a well maintained barn can still be found but, for the most part, the big metal silos are the farmers choice for storage. I read that the farmers were asked why they paint their barns red, they said because the paint was cheap. The manufacturer was asked why the red paint was cheap: they said because all the farmers buy that color.

Thanks so much for documenting your trip to our field, Sam. I was unaware of this thread but will be following closely. I'm having as much fun looking at the old architecture as I am the planes. I appreciate you coming and enduring the storm and glad to hear that you had a good time. We enjoyed having you and hope to see you again next year!

July 7/8, Big bird flyin at Celina Flying Sportsman at Celina, Ohio.
104 miles.

I only stayed for Saturday as the temperature was in the triple digits.
They have about a 650' all grass runway with an additional 200 more feet added.
A stream at the end of the runway can pose a problem for 'overruns'!
They are located at the back of a county park with farmland surrounding the area.
The high temperatures kept some pilots away but the dedicated (and stupid) showed up.
I got five flights in, including a half time show with three other warbirds for the spectators.

Americana.
Route 127

The 'back roads' are really excellent as they were the 'highways' before the inter-states were developed in the 50's as they are wide and usually straighter than the inter-states and can easily handle large semi's.

Lots of chicken farms up by Celina: I think this area produces millions of 'em.

The 'corporation' farms aren't everywhere as there are still 'family' farms.

Sam,

Growing up in North Dakota we had two bases and I used to see the BUFF's quite often. At the west end of the state are the Badlands and they would fly Nap of the Earth and man what a sight.

July 14/15, Warbird flyin at CORKS in Centerburg, Ohio.
130 miles.

Another nice, long grass runway: about 800' but can be longer since it's part of a private full size runway. In the middle of farmland so no restrictions.
Dennis, Mike and I got some formation flying in during the day.
I had a good time as I got five flights in and did taxi test on the B-26.
The food was great and they had home made apple pie so I bought six pieces so I could take it home for later enjoyment!

Mike,
Thanks for the pie: only one piece left.
========

N17 prep for this weekend's Ohio Dawn Patrol (July 20-22).

First time that I've had my balsausa 1/3 scale Nieuport 17 out of the hanger so batteries needed charging, elevator lines were loose and a little adjustment on the wing lines.
The GT-80's turning 1700/5860 on a 26/8 so plenty of power.
My paint ball gun's not working but, other than that, she's ready.

ODP is a great field for WW I: two grass runways in the valley and huge walnut trees in the pit area for shade.
Pilots as far away as New York attend and there will be at least two 1/2 scales there.

July 20-22, Ohio Dawn patrol at Cincinnati Aeromodelers in Harrison, Ohio.
35 miles.

Just a short trip along the belt way to get there.
A nice all grass, double runway down in a valley.
Paul, Lee and a great work crew put on an impressive event.
I counted 49 planes with the bulk of them 1/3 scale and larger.

The 'food' crew provided lots of great food.
Saturday night was 160 pound pig roast.

My N17 'bit the dust': Some swirling winds on the far side of the field moved the plane 90 degrees to the right and, before I knew it, the plane was coming straight towards the pits so I had to 'dump' it.
