oh man Sam....not only is the N17 one of my WW1 favs, but yours was a beauty....I'm so sorry you had to put it in like that, but I'm sure you had no other options at that point.

Once again you show what kind of man you are, by putting others safety first.

sorry for you loss.

Casey

Thanks guys.
Yesterday, I dismantled her, keeping the hardware and burying the rest.
At least I got 17 flights during the ODP flyin with lots of touch-n-go's.
At least my last rebuild of the fuse was stronger: The entire front end that was rebuilt was still intact. The GT-80 engine looks good: the hairline distance between the shaft and magneto is continuous when I hand turn the shaft. Looks like the aluminum cowl cushioned the impact.
I'm probably going to order a 1/3 Nieuport N28 like I used to have. I've still got the G-62 engine and wheels. I'll put the paint ball gun and smoke in her. I always liked how docile the N-28 was for take off, flying and landing: it was very light (upper 20's) and would fly very slow. Cost wise, since I have all the hardware, it will only cost several hundred dollars. Last year, I lost the N28 at Joe Nall when it took off by itself and crashed.

An important item that I left off on the N28: it handled high winds very well. I could fly it while others were in the 'hanger'.

New glasses for us old guys!

Noticed that I could see better at 10' with my bifocals so I had my eyes examined (no, just the eyes!). As we get older (real older!), our eye site can improve, which was in my case.
Besides the usual test for glaucoma, etc, I'll now be able to better see those planes out there a couple thousand feet (no more excuses for crashes!).

See what apple pie will do fo you!

Sorry to hear about your plane.

I had an interesting day with the B-25 yesterday, the nose gear broke then I was also having issues with the right engine not spooling up. Long story short right engine needs new bearings and maybe even a crank. It was blowing oil everwhere. Thank goodness it is still under warranty. Nose gear pin is replaced and fixed already. The world of warbirds I guess..

==========
Local field flying:
July 29:

Several of us stopped at Bob Evans for morning chow.
Upper 80's with a slight breeze.

A good turnout of warbirds.

I was going to re-maiden the Z P-40 but I forgot the transmitter.
Got three flights on the P-47 flying with my buddy and his P-47.
I did a sharp left turn and the steel pin on the right trunion (the one I straightened) bent again on my first landing. I cycled the retracts and it still worked so I flew two more times before it got 'too bent'. Fortunately, I have two new ones and will install them (should have done that, before, instead of trying to re-use the old ones!).

Americana:
An unusual house about a mile from the field.

Jeff,
certainly am: getting all my planes ready.
Plan on leaving early Wednesday (Aug 8) morning so I'll be there around 6-8 PM (730 miles through 5 states). The 'JOG' the following week from Owatonna to Fond du lac is only 250 miles.

Scott,
I'm still converting the folding wings to electric so it won't be coming: no room, anyway, as I want to bring my new B-26 marauder and P-40.

List:
Z P-47 thunderbolt
Z P-40 warhawk
Z C-45 twin beechcraft
Z F9F panther
Z P-61 blackwidow
Bates B-26 maruader

My favorite two weeks of the year!

If I was only going to two events for the year these would be them.
NORTHERN ALLIANCE MILITARY FLY IN at Owatonna, Minnesota, Aug 10-12
WARBIRDS AND CLASSICS OVER THE MIDWEST at Fond du lac, Wisconsin, Aug 16-18
A 1700 mile total round trip and worth every mile to see 100+ pilots that bring a lot of high quality planes that they have built.
The first leg of the journey is to Owatonna and then, the following week, I go to FDL on Monday and fly all week on 1300' of all grass runways.

It would otherwise be possible, but I just started a new job and have accumulated no leave time, and NAMFI is WAY too good of an event to show up for only 1-1.5 days! Same with Fond du Lac. Brutal.

Next year for sure. I know there's a large group that goes up to MN from Guthrie, OK, so I know there will be opportunities down the road!

It was amazing! We had 20+ people from OK for the entire event!
I asked Ricky if they could hold on and spend next week with us in Fond Du Lac but unfortunately he needed to get back the the cattle.
Next Year!

August 10-12, Northern alliance military flyin at Owatonna, Minnesota.
725 miles.

14 hours through five states but I 'made it'!
A long trip but it was worth it.
850' paved and about 1300' grass: even I can land on it!
Lots of pictures so I'll post as I process them.

Video of Brian's 12' P-47 (ZDZ 4 cylinder 420) landing:

Pictures:
sunrise.
Jeff flying his functional exhaust bearcat while Phil and Cassey spot.
Runway/pit pictures.
Unusual plane with retracts with fairings extending past the bottom of the wing in the UP position.
