cvint - GREAT JOB!! That must have been fun!! Did you put a set of landing gear on the plane?

Thanks everyone for keeping this thread going. I was so interested, yesterday, to see a message, on my cell phone / e-mail, about another entry in this thread. Again thanks!!
Here in Cincinnati, Ohio the days are starting to get lighter later and darker earlier - must be going-on towards winter soon. Oh Well!! I guess that means "Building Time"!!
Along with flying my RC planes this summer, I've also been spending hours (what hours are left over) fixing my planes I flew this summer, So I haven't taken time to build anything recently. I guess I'll start on a "scratch-build" of the Delta Hustler soon.
As mentioned above, I have a building base / frame / contraption I'll start with. I've also been given some formers, to fashion internal parts from. The only other thing I have is a set of plans.
If anyone is interested, I'll start fairly soon and take photographs along the way as I build.
Photos below are the "building contraption" and some of the "formers".
For now...that's it. Let me know if I should bother with the photos... Mike

Mike-glad to see the intrest. yes,the Hustler has trke gear with no nose wheel steering. The jig you made should speed up your build. Are your wing rib templates made of plywood ? Looking forward to seeing your build.

cvint - No, the wing rib templated look like they're made of a thin formica. Whoever made them glued parts of the plans to the formica and then cut them out (with the paper, from the plans, still attached).
Right now I have a doctor's appointment in an hour, but later today I'll try to photograph the wing templates at a closer focus and add them to this thread. It seems clear they were made to only draw around to fassion new ribs.

cvint - Here are some close-up photos of the wing ribs I spoke about the other day. As I said, I think the material they're made of is Formica...if it's not, then I don't know what it is.
The stuff I was handed, to make this airplane, was made to make a build pretty quick. And... I'm gonn'a love it. I'll continue to submit photos of the build if anyone's interested. Right now, I'm going shopping for some fresh balsa. I'll begin by copying the ribs, F1 - F4 formers and just generally getting things setup.
Also I do have question for the guy who lent the stuff for me to use. Remember the building-board photo above? This is (as you know) a silly question, but one I can't get started without having the answer to. The rib-blocks on my building board are 3/4 inch tall...on the plan, it appears they should only be 1/2 inch tall. Does it make a difference? I don't know, but I'll ask.

The rib blocks on the Hustler were 3/4 " if that helps. Your model looks like a Talon Zepher-3/4 " sounds right. The Hustler was designed
by Weldon Smith and Bob Baldwin and Weldon Smith designed the Talon Zepher.
If the materials you were given had 3/4" blocks , I would use them.

cvint - OK, I've done some checking with the guy who was / is nice enough to let me borrow his setup for the Delta Hustler. After our last conversation I wanted to know what exactly I was "getting into" so he responded via e-mail. The rib forms, the building board and the plans I was given came to me via a gentleman by the name of Tom Scott. Does that name ring a bell?

Anyway, below is his (e-mail) response to me:

Hi Mike,
As with most planes built for competition this Delta was adapted from the 45" original Hustler. The Jig, rib templates and set of plans were used for pylon in those days. You may have to read between the lines here and there. You are welcome to use mine as a ref. The plane I fly is from the plans I gave to you. It is a reduced size Delta Hustler adapted from the original plans by my Father. He set a world speed record with this same plane in 1963 using home built Reed radio equipment and a McCoy 60 Red head built by Don Jelyk. A second attempt was made a year or 2 later with a very heavy more streamlined Hustler made with foam wings on a fiberglass ctr. section and again, McCoy 60 laid on its side and completely cowled in. See if Bill Brian can make a copy of Stevens building experience with the delta. It may offer more insight as to what to expect.
Any more questions just let me know.
Tom

So, I'll be starting the build today!!!

Hi Guys, In keeping with my promice to bring some photos of the build of my Delta Hustler, I have to confess I haven't been able to put as much time into it, just yet, as I would like to, but here is what I've been able to do so far.
I've cut out the main ribs using a band saw. Then I turned to a 1" belt sander to remove all the pencil lines and have sanded them all with 220 grit sand paper.
Next (you can't see it here & I had no idea I would need to do this) I'll have to take time to "open-up" the space in all the ribs to accept the front (horizontal) leading edge. Even though I hand cut them open with an Exacto knife, they're not all the same width. So, that's next.
My wife is away this weekend, so maybe I'll get more time to work on the plane. Below are some pics of what's happened so far.

My wife and I are leaving this Friday for a badly needed vacation, at Pawleys Island, South Carolina and we'll be gone for ten days.
Before we go though, I thought I would put up several photos of how I'm using the building board I mentioned before. This is as far as I've gotten and won't have a chance to do any more work on it until after Nov. 5th.

Ken, thanks for making that kit available to someone who might really want it. I'm really sorry about your failing eye sight. I can't imagine how painful and unhappy this condition must make you. Although, if it makes you keep your planes out of the air, maybe that will be a good thing for them...and again for someone who might really benefit from them and your experiences. I'll pray for you.

My wife and I are still not back from vacation yet, but now in a slow period, I thought I would try again to post some of the photos I tried to bring to you'all before.

For me, building from scratch, is a real chalange I love. I really enjoy working through the questions of... "what comes next?", and ..."but, shouldn't I do that first?" and ..."then how an I gonn'a do THAT?"
The board and templates Tom Scott gave me to begin with have really helped and are working well to help me get along in the process. I'm having a hard time waiting to return from vacation to start working on it again.

Congratulations Ken! I'm glad for you that you got that detail taken care of. I know you've been waiting on that for some time. I just wish you didn't have to go through all of that because of your failing eye-sight.

I have been able to spend some time working on my Hustler.
As I looked at the plans, I realized the next thing I was to do was to find a way to provide and apply lots of angeled pieces, between each rib, at the very forward portion of the horizontal leading edge. I figured out two things, right away; one, the angle of the pieces was not 45 degrees so I wasn't going to be able to use "angeled stock" readily available to us... I was going to have to make the stuff myself (at about 35 degrees).

The second thing I realized was the stock I made at first, as suggested by the AMA plans (1/4 X 3/32 inches) wasn't going to be large enough to "fit the bill" for this plane. So I re-made more angeled pieces that were larger than the ones I made at first. Then I was happy.

At this point I guess you guys can tell I'm not too worried about the aircraft's weight. I plan to power the Delta Hustler with a Jett 35. So there should be plenty of power to move her along.

Next I went forward with beginning to add 1/16th inch pieces of flat stock, between the stringers, to add torsional (spelling?) strength.
After this photo was taken, I also completed this task on the port side as well. I also installed the trailing edge - top & bottom.

There was a construction article in RCM, or AMon one of these Deltas that has wing tip skids on the tip plates and a single landing gear in the middle to form a triangle platform. It used a .19 engine and a Rand LR-3 actuator on a sliding plate that made it into a mechanical elevon mixer, very cute.

jaymen, was this recently? Can you give me a link to the article?

I'm still very early in this build and I would love to see what you're referring to. Last year I finished a Lanier Shrike (scratch-build also) and considered something like that. I would love to see this one.

It's been some time since I've updated my build, so I am adding to it.
Below is a photo of a cure to one of my concerns about the trailing edge of this Delta. I could find no "good" stock to insert hinges for the ailerons or elevator. So, I glued together two narrow strips of 3/32nd hardwood - 3/8ths wide. Then I attached them it to trailing edge of the airplane. Before attaching the trailing edge I did remove the same amount of width from the airplane, so the length of the plane is the same as it was.

Next is the setup I'm going to use to attach both aileron servos (inside the wings). I've used hardware I can access and remove if I need to to replace a bad-servo if needed. This took quite a while to "think-up" and construct, but I like to leave my options open in the future. These are both Hitech HS 82 MGs. on hardwood supports.

Here is a photo of the Jett 35 engine I'm planning to use. This engine has flown several times attached to a combat Gremlin. The Gremlin was wayyyyy to fast, with this engine and no one wanted to play (combat) with me. She still turns an APC 9 x6 at 15,000 rpm.

Finally (for this morning), this is a trick I learned building a Lanier Skrile. Again, I like some things removable, if possible, so I've built a modification of the center top of the fuselage. The trailing edge side of the "inserted top" is setup as a tongue, that will slip into a part of the back of the plane. Then the front-edge (of the insert) will have a tongue of its own that sticks out from the underside of the front to be held in place by another insert.
In this photo, I show two "inserts", one rounded and the other flat. On the first, I laid the 3/32nd balsa on top of the arch-insert; on the second, I laid more balsa inside the arch-inserts - to make the transition, across the back of the plane flat.
I like the rounded one best.
