I live in Kansas, but sorry there is no room left for any outsiders. Really is it even worth moving anyways. The world is ending 12/21/2012 so California is out of the question and really any coastal place would be a bad idea. There again I pretty sure you cant get any further inland than Kansas, but again we are full up. Come on home is where the heart and my rc planes are. good luck to you instigater.

Hell, when I was 11 years old living in Coronado, SD, we had 4 lemon trees growing in the back yard. They'd fall off the tree and rot on the ground. So I decided, on my own, to make lemonade and sell it at my stand in my front yard. My location was good, main street Orange Avenue, close to Star Park and literally right next door to the Crown Hotel/Motel.

Thanks again gents.

My wife has an almost identical story. When she was a child they had plum trees in the back. Rather than pick up rotten plums, she would gather them when they were ripe, walk a few blocks to a small corner grocery and sell them to the grocer.

My family had a farm and raised beef cattle and horses, so I nver ran out of things to do.

Lol funny responses.

If I could find the same job and pay I have right now back in the midwest, MN, IA, ND - where I'm from,  I'd go in a heartbeat.  Having grown up in the midwest every town was always sprawling, every suburb growing exponentially, and services (restaurants, bowling, theatres, malls, good schools..etc) were the norm.  And yet the thing I miss most, the GREEN summers.  Here in the south-southwest there's plenty of charms but I often feel like a missionary -my real reward will be in Heaven, not here.

One of the little charms actually is the dryness, no mold in the house or gararge, but in MN and IA where I've owned homes it was so moist mold was always a big deal, but then again the problem in the dry SW is the blowing dust, if you dust in the morning and its been blowing during the day you'll find a film of dust on everything by evening.

Some people were mentioning the Rocky Mt states ie NM/CO - I lived there for awhile, the mountain air felt awesome but our town was at 5000' elevation and though the model airplanes didn't mind it much the rc heli's were quite weak compared to at 2000'. (I'm not an electric man! -gas and glow all the way baby!)

Mine and my wifes parents are in MN, and siblings too, and love their visits but realistically when we lived right next door they were almost a distraction from us and our own family, though free babysitting was nice we gave more than we every received!LOL, have fun on your decision!

All im saying is if you can live off the PC completely with out need to actually search for a job, Miami is OK.....If your not fluent with Spanish maybe broward would be better for you. Miami is all Hispanic (myself included) but there is more Americanized diversity the further up you go. I was born in this country and im Americanized as they come.........but there's parts of this city where u'd swear the people forgot there no longer in there own country. It becomes annoying at times, i can't remember the last time i was able to order mcdonalds or BK in english......

Its nice out, sun 24/7, no snow, beach is always 30 minuets away, tons of night life, and the broward area has tons of RC scene's, Miami itself is pretty dead for organized RC racing and with the huge market bust THERE'S TONS OF SURPLUS HOUSING so you can pretty much go anywhere you wan't. Schools are also much better and much safer in broward.

Either way man welcome back to the states!

Not stressed Bobby, we just really feel like a change in our lives. 20 years away from home, I realize things have changed and it's not the US I left 20 years ago.

I mean, think about it, where I live, people pull in front of a corner shop, honk their horn and someone comes running out with whatever you're looking for. People take their maid to the Friday (Sunday in the States) Brunch to watch the kids while they go and gorge themselves. There's even a hotel's restaraunt that has special 'kids & maids' menus. Maids take the kids to the park while parents sleep in the day. It is so damn hot here most of the year, grass doesn't grow unless it's totally over-watered and we all have to live inside in the air conditioning.

My kids don't know what it's like to mowe the lawn, trim the hedges, rake the leaves, have a paper route, wash and wax the car, etc for their allowance. I also had a shoe shine box and I could spit polish a shoe to an almost mirror finsh. I bought the supplies with saved up money from allowance. Lots of people walking from the hotels to the base wanting their shoes shined and a cold glass of good lemonade who appreciated this young man doing the right thing. I made good money which let me buy my models, rockets, u-control planes, buy ice cream at the local Baskin Robins, go to movies and get stuff I liked from the 'Five & Dime' next to the movie theatre.

I realize it's probably not like that anymore in some locations, but I do know there are still places in the world that you can do these things. I just want my kids to learn this. To get an understanding of the value of money and earning it through their own work and intuition...that they've developed on their own. I fear that if they grow up here, they will miss out on this.

Hence, I really do appreciate all the ideas and suggestions posted in this thread.

Thanks again gents.

If this comes across as political i apologize ahead of time. Ok SD is having the biggest bomb ever so getting a job will be easy. There is no state income tax, the waiting room times in the ER is like 20 mins.  Just stay away from Stergis and Watertown

If you have the time, it would be good to spend a few days for yourselves at each place you select. Sample the lifestyle, people, etc.

I travel a lot, have lived in Michigan most of my life, but would move (back) to central CA, north Phoenix or Scottsdale in AZ, or central or north FL.  Good schools are very important, as much for security as education.

Is there any of your work we may be familiar with, TG? Good luck in your search!

Haha, one can only hope DVP.

I enjoy reading people's passion for where they live. And who better to hear it from, eh?

There's enough bad news in the world mate, it's refreshing to find some positives, and who knows, it may just help us to make a more informative and researched decision .

This thread can go on for 500 pages with everyone telling you that where they live is the best

Yes sure.
I just wonder how many of them have actually lived anywhere else

Seriously! As much as I hate to invite even more people here, Colorado is the new Cali. As we say here in Boulder, the people who stay here are the ones who get lost on their way to Southern California. The cost of living is really high in Boulder, but the surrounding areas aren't so bad.

I would definately second Arizona. I have been here 13 years and love it! Although, Phx is getting BIG!!!

Check out Prescott. It is really nice up there. Flagstaff, ShowLow Payson areas are nice too.

Great weather, good people, taxes are cheap relative to other states. And, any direction you go, is diferent activities and climate.

National and geo political shenanigans are what they are. Aint gonna change. The US is depressed right now. The American people will overcome, as they always do.

Good luck with your endeavours...

No. No, we don't. Better remove my recommendation then.

There's an RC track in Joliet, but it's no fun getting there from my town, so fogettaboutit.

Really though, I do like it out here in the western burbs of Chicago. Traffic can stink though (luckily not for my daily commute). Lots to do in the city.

hahaha...fogettaboutit...ok.

Last time I heard the name Joliet was when I watched "The Blues Brothers"....and yes, the original. And Joliet wasn't a cool place to be.... . I do realize it's a burb and not just a prison.

True dat. Wish there was an RC track closer to me though. Ah well. I still enjoy it here - great public schools, nice community feel to our town (it's not huge), nice area. I could use a milder summer though.

Not bad usually. This winter is freakishly warm (after they predicted it would be the most snowfall in like 50 years). They sure blew that one.

Normally (not this winter), we get one solid 0 degree (F) week, and other days like that. Some nasty wind chill temps here and there. Then we get some snow (nothing awful for me), get to play in it, fun stuff like that. Temps in the teens, twenties.

I dunno, it varies obviously. But I don't think it's too bad - it seems worse right towards the end of the season, when you're ready for spring and get hit with a 25 F day or four and get annoyed.

I like the season changes. I grew up in southern Ohio (suburb of Dayton), lived in CA (Silicon Valley - San Jose area) for a handful of years, and now Chicagoland. CA was really temperate where I was, very nice. Real Estate prices were ludicrous, and honestly I missed our midwest seasons (although I'll gripe about 'em now and again). I really enjoy the spring/fall here. Summer gets some pretty hot/humid days, but not for an overly long stretch, and you're used to the heat I'm sure.

I suppose it goes without saying that a lot of folks tend to like where they're at - some here have posted otherwise, but you get the idea. It has also been correctly stated that many times folks will love their area, but don't really have experience anywhere else. My experience elsewhere is limited, as you can see.

Nevertheless, I'm happy to answer any questions you have. In general, I like the midwest (the people, the food, the beer, etc). I've liked other places too, and I'm sure there are tons of other places that are just as nice or better (weather too!).

I have no reason to move, since we have roots here, and our family is close-ish. That's important to me and our kids. The schools in my area are fantastic (but you pay for that...nice schools = more expensive housing). Weather is fine (could be better, could be worse). Lots of technology and tech jobs around here, so that's critical.

My summary of the other places I've been:
Silicon Valley - great weather, great tech jobs, outlandish real estate, no family nearby for me, dunno about schools
Dayton, OH suburbs - ok weather, cheap real estate, nice schools, family nearby...but I worry about tech jobs there

If I could live anywhere in the world and was raising a family I would consider Denmark as a number 1 place of interest. However - they will likely not let you in as they have a functional immigration policy and extremely tight worker protection.

I am looking at retirement places and I was thinking of someplace with good weather and scenic. I was thinking Northern California like around Santa Rosa, but I have never been. The wife loves Montana, she has never been there in the winter, but the summers are wonderful.

There are more han a few people I know who are seriously considering retirement in Arkansas of all places.
