Hey guys,
Right now im flying my second plane a sig four star 40 which i built from a kit. I can fly her fairly well however need alot more practice with her. From now on however i would much rather prefer to scratch build my planes (bad luck with the 4* kit, got alot of poor materials). I have always wanted to build and fly a warbird and among my favs is the p-51d mustang (ok im not original but i still love this plane) or i also like the p-40 warhawk.
Ive been looking at the top-flite instructions for both these planes have been very impressed with the design and engineering of top-flite so im guessing if i do build one ill probably base it mostly on there plans.
A couple questions about these warbirds.
1) Would you recommend one of these warbirds as a third plane. Flaps and retracts will be installed.
2) Im debating upon which radio to buy for it (and a jet i hope on building as well). So far its between the 9c and 8u. Which do you think best sutes a warbird?
3) Which retracts would be better pnematic or eletric. I plan to spend less than $70 on retracts (including servo airtank etcc..)
4) Does a .61 fx fly these planes well or should i get a different engine (i dont have the .61 yet)?
5) Does anyone know a link where i can find schematics of the scale p-51/p-40 (the ones where it show you all the parts).
6) Is the airfoil for the top-flite models scale. Do these warbirds have tailgear retracts? Does the full-scale p-40 or p-51 carry drop tanks or bombs?

Thanks alot for any replies,

Papa

P.S. Does anyone know of people that build there own 2-stroke engines. Think it would be fun to build my own instead of buy it.

Go 4 stroke for cool sound and great power.

Hi I will tray to answer all your questions:
1) It depend on your flight skills, some people can fly acrobat as a first plane some will never fly it... Ask some fellow at your local field Am I ready or not?
2) Because you will spend lo of money for this project I will recommend radio which support PCM modulation. And one which you will feel more comfortable in hands.
3) For this size of model is better pneumatic
4) It shut fly well, but 90. size 4stroker will add tons of reality, and you can use a bigger propeller too
5) books (in action, walk around and in magazines about scale aircraft, kits, atc.)
6) a) I don thing so, because different airfoil helps model to fly better - It´s like that, if you just will decrease full scale plans, all bads behaviour of real plane will go worser
b) all p-51 have a tail gear retracts¨
c) p-40 only later models (M, N, ...)

I hope this helped you

Hi,

I have read a lot of threads here and have a desire for a warbird also. I am building a TF P-47 as it is (according to others) the easier of the TF warbirds to fly. Read some of these threads on the P-51 & P-40. You may want to try the 47 also. I am going to use a Super tiger .75 and robart pneumatic retracts.

Good luck, Keith

Thanks for the replies,
About the radio going pcm wont be that difficult as a i only have to switch the reciever correct? However the four-stroke is going to be a problem these things can get really expensive i right now i dont have the radio or engine.
Right now im positive that i dont have the flying ability however i am planning to spend a long time on this project so right know im just getting the info i need. The p-47 is another great plane and is defenetly a possiblity however since im going all out here im going to want to pick my favorite one.
And can anyone tell me what are some good pnematic retracts for a .60 size plane under $70 everything preferably. And would putting tail retract on be a waste of time a money or do alot of people do this.

Thanks alot,

Papa

P.S. Do you think it would look stupid if i put a drop tank/bomb on a p-51?

Papa,
Unfortunately, I have yet to find a good set of pnuematic retracts that don't cost more than the price of the kit. As an example, I am currently building an old TF P51B kit and the Century Jet retracts for this kit cost $246. The Pica FW190D
kit I'm building has the CJ retracts and they were even more expensive. I think your best bet would be to look on EBay
for a used set. Good luck.

aaa about receiver no
you can switch to pcm on your tx, but you can´t do it backward
about undercarriage for 70 bucks it will by hard, but in Europe - Italy is a company named eurokit, their kits cost about 70 euro
http://www.eurokitlucca.it/EngHTM/Eng_Modell_frameset.htm
They work good for the money
Tail retract is waste of time in this scale
What radio do you have?

Hey guys thanks again for the replies,
What i meant to say is switch the the reciever meaning get a different one. Right now im just using the typical 4 channel tx but now im plaanning on getting a new one for the warbird.
Why are these retracts so expensive. Has anyone just bought a pair of plans and built some themselves if so was it cheaper? $246 is alot of money for retracts.

Why spend so much money for a radio? I'd go with a good 6 channel and spend the rest on the retracts. You won't be happy with cheap retracts!

Hey Tom,
I plan to build really complex scale models so i do need the channels and features.
I know these arent 100% but i really think they add something to the plane. Flaps and retracts nessasry. Bomb dropper and landing lights not so nessasary but i do want them.
I really dont want to have to buy another radio.
Although what i was thinking is buying something like an eclipse with 7 channels and putting the landing lights as a switch on the plane so i can still fly it in the late evening.

Papa,

I know it's all reletive but $246 is not expensive for a set of phumatic retracts. Some go as high a $1000 just for the mains!

Anyway, if you fly off grass I would not use mechanical retracts IMHO. I'm sure there are those that would disagree with me but they really take a beating on grass and you will constantly be "fiddling" with them.

Good luck!

I take off from a paved runway.

Is there anyone to get pnematic retracts for under $100. Building some parts myself?

Mechanicals are a good option for up to a .60 sided WB in that case... Just remeber they are alot more fragle than fixed gear! ;-)

Good luck!

I would much rather go with pnematic as there alot more realistic.
