Oh yes. And they were allowed to do it in those days. The undulating runway makes it look all the more impressive.

It was an everyday sight back in the 70's Andy - never tired of it though!

Mind you, it wasn't only Gnat drivers who did low-level stuff at Kemble...I do recall seeing a certain Flt Lt Andy Bascombe do a spirited departure and fast (very) low pass on one occasion in his Harrier!

Cheers,

Dick

Still hoping you will find the incriminating evidence in your loft Dick!

Ha Ha, as soon as I saw the text "Song is 'Pictures of Matchstick Men' by Status Quo" I knew why you liked it Dick!
I can remember ducking as the Arrows flew overhead in the public displays in the 60s and 70s.

Urrrrrr...dunno about that H, although I did have a good chat with Francis Rossi when we did Children in Need at Brize a few years back...really nice bloke but it don't mean I'm a fan!

Just seen this thread on UKAR...

http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=40280

...with a nice pic of XP 503 - the first of a long line of Gnats Majored at Kemble in the 70s.

Andy, have had no luck with the Kemble Meteor Mag with your Harrier on the cover...Eddie Barker knows Glen Moreman quite well I believe (he's an authority/collector of Kemble history stuff)...I'll ask Eddie to enquire...

Cheers,

Dick

OK. A technical question for guys who worked on Gnats ...... how about it Dick???

The pics below, gleaned from the link in Dick's post above, show a Gnat landing on full flap, and with a heck of a lot of negative tailplane angle.

When John Carpenter was producing his 1:5.4 scale Gnat kit way back when, he made one with the scale flaps. And when he first deployed the flaps high up, the plane stuck its nose down so fast and so far that he never used them again.

My question is: is there a linkage between flaps and horizontal stab on the full size Gnat to trim out the nose-down pitch from the flaps? I know that there was such a link between the u/c door airbrakes and stab, because the doors did produce a nose-down couple when deployed, and this effect and the link between doors and stab is described in Victor Bingham's Gnat book. But Bingham makes no mention of any link to flaps, though John C's experience seems to indicate that there is such a link and the pics below seem to validate my supposition that there is.

I'd like to know because one of my projects this year is to build a Carpenter Gnat for one of my Wren 44s, and I'll be fitting flaps.

Russ Delaney was intending to produce updated kits of the Carpenter Gnat, but I don't know how far he's got. Keith Whiddett reviewed one kit (sans flaps) in RCJI last year. The 54in span model was somewhat overpowerd with a Wren Supersport.

Hi Gordon,

I didn't get involved in control set-ups on Gnats (did the engine/fuel system side of things) but I'm pretty sure there was a link between flap and stab through the Hobson Unit (a mechanical/hyd mixer unit) to help longitudinal control. There must be ex-Gnat riggers who come here who could tell us for sure...or maybe Dave Gladwin, as I believe he flew them.

What I do recall is the Gnat being 'tight' to work on (it was almost Dinky Toy size!)...was nice to get back to the relative spaciousness of the Hunter

Cheers,

Dick

One off the downwind checks on the Gnat was to adjust the t/plane incidence so that when full flap
was applied you stayed alive. This came from a friend who flew them. Hope I'm correct.

A while ago I found a bit on an Indian AF website abour their memories of operating the Gnat, one of them mentioned that after take-off, if you were not already leaning forward on the trimmer when you raised the flap, it would do a loop. That implies that there was a lot of up trim applied with flap, and that it was done manually.
