Hi, I've got the chance to purchase a Ryan ST kit with a 90" wingspan (the two seat version), but the modeler who owns it does not have a set of plans to go with the kit. He believes that the kit was cut from the plans that were published in the September 1960 issue of MAN. Does anybody happen to have that article in their possession? If you do, I would very much like to get a copy of it if at all possible. Feel free to either post here or to PM me. By the way, have any of you built this plane? Any thoughts on its construction or flight characteristics? Are there any weak points in the design that need particular attention? Thanks for any insight you can provide.

A 90 inch STA for 1960 would be very rare. Back then the largest glow engine was a .60 and gasoline engines of suitable power were not used yet. Maybe it was from the 1980's.

I think that I need to clarify. The building plans appeared on the pages of the magazine. You could enlarge them to make the model any size you want. Whoever cut this kit enlarged the plans to make a 90" wingspan version of this plane. If I could get a copy of the magazine article, I could blow up the plans to fit the size of the kit to build it.

Hi jug;

Greetings from the ever warm 'Valley of the Sun'.

I got the old MAN mag out, & there she is, the Ryan ST, construction article by the prolifiic Ted Strader. He claims the ooutlines are true to scale, but enlarged the stab, and his scale was 2.2"=1', and his model was powered with a K&B 19, and looks to be around a 60" wing span, so the 90"er that you mention must be an enlargement of the MAN plans, who knows. Anyways, I can email you the article, just send me your email address.

Dere we go, anudder problem solved; who's next? Hey, I always luv delving into these old mags, they're treasures for sure, best regards from Glendale, Arizona.

Joe Nagy.

Way back when, we used to fly large models with relatively small engines. We flew them rather than throwing on a huge engine and hanging it on the prop. I've even flown a fifth scale Waco YMF on a SuperTigre 75. They will fly on the wing, and not just on the prop.

As a side note, I'm currently doing one with a 100 inch wingspan, Single cockpit and will replicate the race version with the Ranger engine instead of the smaller Menasco version. I'm using a 40cc ZDZ rear intake rear exhaust engine on it.

Joe, your're the man! I'm looking forward to receiving a copy of the article. I sent you a separate email message so that you can contact me directly. Did you get it?

Michaelj2k, now I'm a little uncertain. The guy who has the kit told me that it is a 90" wingspan ST (not an STA) that was cut from a set of plans from MAN. But your link for the updated design shows a 90" wingspan STA. So maybe he does have the STA but doesn't realize it. It looks like I'll need both sets of plans, and when the kit arrives I can find out if it's the ST or the STA.

Have any of you built these planes? I'd love to hear about your experiences about building and flying them.

I built the Ted Strader Ryan ST from MAN plans when the magazine came out. As drawn, the plane would have been controlled by rudder and elevator no ailerons. I built mine with ailerons and a K&B 45 RC motor. It was an excellent flyer. Fairly easy to fly and quite good aerobatic performance for the day.

The weak points were the landing gear and engine installations. The gear was pretty light for the size of the plane and you could see a lot of lateral flexing when taxiing. The engine, inverted of course, was pretty cranky as far as starting and idling. The balsa cowling was pretty useless and nearly all flying was done sans cowl. Of course today's engines work much more reliably even inverted. And you should plan on making a fiberglas cowl if nothing is available to purchase.

As far as scale outline, it's my impression that Strader enlarged the horizontal stab and reduced the size of the vertical. Those were pretty common tricks back then to make an easier flying plane.

Hi Art;

I finally got your requested Man 9/60 article downloaded and sent off to you just a few moments ago, along with 3 other ST/STA articles I dug up in my research. they were

2. ST by Dick Fischer. RCM 3/67, 50" ws , 15>19 eng

3. STA by Maxey Hester, MAN 9/71, Nats Winner/Kitted by SIG

4. STA Special, by Burnis Fields Jr.,, MAN 5/86, 91" ws

My #1 Wifey. 'The Shirl' did all the downloading for me and forwarded them to you, as she is an expert doing this. Hope they are of assistance to you, I really enjoyed doing the research, best regards from Glendale, AZ.

Little Joey and 'The Shirl'.

PS. Let me know if you rece'd everything OK. Joe

Funny coincidence #2. above, listing an ST published by Dick Fischer. And the post above that, signed by "Dick". All the same person me. I've had a lifelong love affair with the ST / STA. I often think about building another one of those little 50" ST's, only with electric this time. It was an excellent flyer and would only be nicer with an electric motor that could be cowled in a scale fashion and no starting or running problems ! The original one I built for the magazine had a 14 ounce radio installed, and that was state of the art at the time. Be really nice to take a half pound out of the plane.
