HI all, after a disappointing day yesterday, on the first start up of my finished Futura, I am a happy camper today.
Yesturday's first start up was plagued with minor issues, the JC Mammoth had a loose starter connection, probally my bad, anyway found that out, and snugged it together. Secondly was the hot fuse, made me very uncomfortable, knowing that my elevator wires are only 5 inches away, even encased in a foil tube, the heat was over 120degrees.
So last night ,I pulled the single wall pipe out, made corrections(double wall), and installed it for todays run.
Today, every thing went well, the JC Mommoth started, first shot, fuse was cool, 80degrees and lower.
See you all in Florida.

Pete, I dont think the tailcone should be inside the tailpipe.
This might cause underpressure/implosion on full power runs.
Have you ran up to full power like this ? I might be wrong...
Hans

Pete, that is a Jet Cat diagram , I don't think Jet Central recommends that the tail pipe should protrude into the bell mouth, although I never had any experience with the Mammoth.

I know for the Cheetah the recommended distance is around 1 inch, I would verify with Eric to be safe

I know Juan told me you can verify the distance by moving the pipe closer and further away from the tail cone until there is a neutral balance point, i.e. the pipe does not get pushed back or does not get sucked forward, this is the sweet spot

I did that experiment with my Cheetah on the test bench and it was around 1".

Pete

On a more important note I think the foil tape holding the servo wires in place could easily let go and drop onto the pipe. That foil tape is ok but offten just comes unstuck.

I know people are always full of advice but if I were you I would put a little firerglass and resin over that tube to make sure it dont drop down.

Wouldnt want to loose such a nice model for the sake of 30 mins and a few pence worth of glass and resin

hi bob, the foil fastener is deceiveing, their is carbon inside, the foil was to hold to fuse, while the carbon epoxy dried.

Just got this PM from Pete.

HI Hans, do you have any documantation, verifing your statement, if so, great, if not, worthless info.

So thanks Pete, was just trying to help, good luck to you.

Oh , and dont forget to post when you adjust your tailpipe to let us know it wasn't completely worthless info, mark my words....

Hey Pete. Congrats on the completion of your Big Futura. Im sure youre gonna have a blast with it. Theyre great flying machines and certainly draw a lot of attention when they fly. Hey,,, anything as big as that plane always does! Take good care of that big ole bird so you can fly it with us at the "First in Flight" jet rally in NC!!
I do want to share a bit of info with you that might be of good use. I was having heat issues with my Euro Sport a while back. Was running a JC Rhino, and only had 1/4" space between the tail cone and inlet of the pipe. ( not counting bell mouth) The top of the fuse would get really heated up, especially on hotter days, and my pipe was showing signs of thermal issues as well. ( It was a large Tams pipe) Actually, my first pipe was just about to fail at a jet meet I attended in PA. Had a buddy of mine not noticed that evening when I put in the trailer, I might not have had a model the next day. I pipe was about to collapes. I ordered a new pipe from Tam thinking It may have been a bad pipe. After only a few runs, I noticed some of the same signs starting to appear. I called Eric at JC and told him what was going on. When I talked to Eric he told me I had way too little spacing, and suggested I run it 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" space. I moved the pipe back as informed to and set it at 1 1/4" HOLY COW what a difference! Not only did it cause the fuse to cool down a lot, but the performance increase was outstanding. Seriously, it was like bolting on extra horse power! Like RCISFUN, Im running 1" with my Cheetah powered Cougar. Its purrrrrrrrrrrfect on that cat. ( sorry,,,, had to say that!!! lol)
Anyway, just my 2 cents worth. Good luck with the Futura. Dont hesitate to call Eric at JC. He's always more that happy to help his customers!

In HVAC we use a tape that was established by the miltary. it is a foil based tape that has a gummy rhine on the back and will adhere to anything for the long haul...this would be something to look into in an application such as yours where your worried about the heat and your leads getting into your pipe/engine..you can get it at any HVAC/Plumbing parts house such as HD supply.

just a thought.....

HI all, UKR-JET, probally makes the best pipes/ complete with laser welding.
They have done a lot of turbine pipe tests, and had them on video.
If they are watching, or anyone else knows the link to these videos, can you post them here.
Thanks Rcpete

Since this is a Futura thread can I ask (what is probably a dumb) noob question? The back of the pipe rests on a metal exhaust cone that is screwed onto the back of the fuselage. When the model is cracking along at high speed not all the airflow coming in thru the relatively large intakes will go through into the turbine (surely?) but will go to the back of the fuselage causing some pressure build up. At high speed could this pressure inside the fuselage be high enough to cause damage (e.g. pop the canopy)? With my re-maiden flight approaching I'm getting a little paranoid.

HI, I make my own pipes, I use a 321 Stainless Steel, that is one notch above other pipes, it also contains Titanium, for higher temps. Rcpete"s Jet pipe
Now for your question
1- I removed the ss cone, did not like the looks, and no fuse air bypass
2-I made a pipe, with a second draft inducer, to get air flow through the fuse.
3-Since pipes expensive, if I where you, simply, cutout a louver, or grill, at the bottom rear, for air flow.

Thanks Pete. Had the same thought after I posted. No harm in drilling some holes to let the air flow escape. Cheers. Good luck with the maiden flight.

Ive been running the stock setup, large Futura with P160 for several years with no issues. No hot, no air build up, nothing.
I believe the design intent was to have a fully aerobatic Sport Jet that mantains constant speed. Pipe, intake size, etc.
This canopy isnt blowing off!!

quote:
The Futura was developed in a close co-operation with a designer of the automobile industry and a former aerodynamicist of the company BAe from England. Thus a aerobatics jet optimised at the CAD could be generated, which will set optically and aeronautically new indications. The goal was to be built a jet, which is optimised for aerobatics and can by the aerodynamic interpretation be moved with constant speed through the figures.
end quote

I think they had some real professionals on this one and it shows in its flight characteristics!
Scott

Hi all,

All this issues woul be resolved with the intallation of a fully by-pass system "a lo BVM style". You could save a lot of drag on the innner of the fuselage.

Just my 2 cents
