Looking for a dedicated marine radio/ reciever. I prefer pistol grip radio's, but a stick can definately suffice. Currently I have a standard traxxas car radio and reciever. Not 2.4ghz or anything like that, just the basic traxxas one. It really stinks having to worry so much about the radio system, and only be able to go out 40-50 feet. I want to not have to worry about my radio, at all. Being a newbie to gas I have many others things on my mind when I run besides the fact that I need to stay in 40-50 feet lol.

So could you guys tell me a good radio system thats tried and true? I dont care about things like display screens, telemetry etc. I just want it to be reliable and have a far signal range. Also, it doesnt have to be 2.4ghz, for now I run by myself but I plan on going to some NAMBA events soon, so to be honest I probobly need a 2.4ghz.

Thanks
Nick

hello the system i use is not a surface radio but alot of the people in my club use it for gas boats and no one has never even had one fail with it. it is the futaba 6ex 2.4ghz it is a stick type transmitter with 6 channels and i think 6 memorys here is the link to a company in my country but they will definatly stock them in the usa. it is a very good set and your getting futaba quality for a reasonably good price this is alot cheaper than the likes of the futaba 4pk.

let me know how you get on

heres the link see what you think http://www.kingslynnmodelshop.co.uk/Radio-2.4_Flight_Transmitters-Futaba/c29_30_186/p164/Futaba_6EX_2.4_Tx_(Mode_2)_&_R617FS_Rx_Combo/product_info.html

+10!!!  They are both 2.4g systems. The 3pmx is the updated version of the 3pm.  Either one is more than enough radio for a boat.  Anything more you would be just wasting money.

i have mixed feelings about this, after being in the hobby for 20 plus years and making my living in it, compamies like futaba, jr ect have spent the money to get us here, with some great systems, and we have come a long way.. we pay for that research and development in the price we pay for name brand radios, or anything for that matter. i have a futaba 3pk at the time i got it, it was one of the best radio's i have nevr regretted buying the best.that said the flysky radios for a fraction of the cost, have almost no negative feed back except from those that do not have them and are only speculating that for the price they must be junk,NOT REALLY. when you consider all they did was apply current technology.you could have a 15.oo radio pick up stations from miles away, and work for years. why would our radios be so much? its simply what the market will bare.

I used to use the futaba fasst 6 ex nice system but since trying the cheap flysky system at a fraction of the cost i wont be going back ,they work great and the rx is even water proof.

they maybe water proof but they are not corrosion proof. i have had one go bad in 4 to 6 weeks with the trigger of the transmitter. you could shake the remote with no physical imput and the throttle servo  would move with the shakes. tore the transmitter down to find bad bad corrosion on the trigger. i had the boat crash three times before i realized what was going on. replaced with a 109 dollar futaba 3pl system with no problems. if you want to fight corrosion tear the cases apart and put a light coat of dielectric grease in the surface to block water.

If you make your gas install trouble-free, you will have little to worry about with range/interference issues.

A good-fitting plug cap, shielded plug wire, keeping radio components away from ignition/spark sources, etc., will give you a better margin of safety. If you can only venture out 40-50 feet, something's not right.

Fly sky GT3b here too works great!
Frsky are good as well but I think they are only building add ons so far.

you should have set the failsafe, any radio is only as good as the owner holding onto it.

failsafe only works if you drop signal it would speed up just by shaking the transmitter.

I have switched from a Spektrum 2 chanel to the new DX3R Pro as switched the RX's to the new MR3000's. (The new radio was a gift from my daughter.) I replaced the antenna wires on the RX to 60cm(23.5") so they can still be put in antenna tubes, (bought from HobbyKing.)

Cheers

I don't have a cap on my antenna tube, however the antenna does come out about half an inch from the tube. The radio box is about 10ish inches away from the engine. Another thing worth noting and I think this is why many normal radios dont work well is that its a hydro hull so the electronics are VERY close to water level. I think thats the main problem because the traxxas radio and reciever work fine for my cars. I don't know what a sheilded plug wire is... Could you enlighten me?
Thanks

I've got a little bit of everything from AM radios on up. I no longer use the AM's though but have several FM systems that I wouldn't hesitate to use. Right now most of my boats have been upgraded to 2.4 Gig. I've got a 3 and 4 Futaba PL plus I do have a GT-3B that hasn't seen water time yet. Right now I'm waiting for the 2C and the new FlySky 4-channel to come out which right now looks like later this year.

Tom just had to show a vintage Futaba box radio! That was my first when I ran RC cars. I loved that thing although a little awkward to use. I know of a few people that had theirs upgraded to narrow-band as they also loved them. I still see those floating around yet as I saw one iwth a LaTrax label on it Saturday at a local swap meet.

FlySky-GT3B 3ch 2.4GHz

I have been testing this radio for a year now. I have over 50 hours on my test FlySky-GT3B 3ch 2.4GHz and not one problem yet .

Seems to a very good radio as far my tests go and the price is very good. I now have ( 4 ) FlySky-GT3B radio's and will be testing them as well .

I found after the first few times using this radio it's very easy to program to your models ( user friendly ) I have been using the same test radio in 3 R/C trucks I have
and all my boats , gas, nitro and electric .

I rate the radio a 9 out of 10 ( user friendly , easy to program to your models, very good range, and price ! I don't like where the put the on/off switch !

Just my 2 cents
